My '68 Buick Gran Sport 350 California badges had one of those thermostatic spring activated exhaust valves in the passenger side exhaust manifold. It wasn't until an exhaust valve on the passenger side bank had burnt and I pulled the head realized that the valve was rusted shut. A few well placed hits on the counterweight and i got the valve to stick itself in the open position. 1968 emissions 😮
@craigcraigster4999
@craigcraigster4999 8 ай бұрын
I had a similar arrangement from FoMoCo on my '69 Cougar back in the day, but it was more of a stovepipe arrangement which connected to the side of the metal air cleaner housing, can't recall if it was to heat the carb or an early emissions system type of tech , was a lonnng time ago. 🤔
@truthwithtom816
@truthwithtom816 8 ай бұрын
We called it a heat riser. Exhaust gas warmed the spring on the side of the carb to make the choke open up. @@craigcraigster4999
@halh865
@halh865 7 ай бұрын
those were heat risers - it would diverst exhaust gas through the intake manifold to heat it up - atomized the air / fuel mixture for better driveability during cold cycle warm-up. If you got on the throttle, the valve could open up for more performance. As it heated up it would open up. It was a maintenance item to inspect and lubricate it so it wouldn't seize. Many weren't maintained. When fuel injection was phased in, heat risers weren't used anymore since the injection atomized the fuel far better than carburetors did
@jdesaavedra0432
@jdesaavedra0432 8 ай бұрын
Back when I regularly operated GM products, that was at the bottom of the right manifold and was called the heat riser. It created temporary back pressure at startup to force exhaust gases through the intake manifold to pre-heat the carburetor. The passage would eventually close up with lead and carbon deposits. Now we route coolant.
@MrDeleoco
@MrDeleoco 8 ай бұрын
Required only one cut to remove . ... Miscalculated🤔❓ But if you had not cut the first, then I would not have known about the back pressure valve😳... Thanks for the show and tell👍

I've had a Corsa exhaust on my 02 Silverado since I came back from deployment in 2004. Twenty years and a bit over 500,000 miles and it still sounds great. The only issue I ever had was with Corsa itself. I had been rear ended and one of the exhaust hangers had been damaged. I called to purchase a new one, because it was a different size than OEM and they denied my purchase. I spoke to someone else and again, they denied my purchase saying that I'd need to buy a new system. This went on for a few years before finally getting someone to sell me a new hanger but they gave me one instead. It arrived and was not the correct isolator. The original steel hanger, mounted to the frame, is smaller than the rubber isolator. They said that they never changed the design on the steel part and that the rubber part is just an OEM part. So what happens every few months is that side of the exhaust will come loose and either fall off or drag the ground. One day I'll get a TIG welder for other projects and then properly fix the exhaust and hanger.
