Parts Falling OFF! Lost Steering Control! 2000-2006 Silverado Sierra GMT 800 5.3

Customer States: Steering feels loose and sloppy. After pulling this Silverado into the shop, the visual inspection found that the steering system has severely worn out linkage. The pitman arm attached to the steering gear is completely worn out and ready to fall apart. The idler arm is loose at the bracket and loose at the idler arm ball in socket joint where the connection is made to the center link of the steering system. The tie rod ends are connected to the center link which connect the wheels to the steering system. If either of the two components come apart the vehicle will become uncontrollable as it would result in a total loss of steering control.

Ray, I would just like to comment about your recent discussions of your videos being too long. Please let this be a non issue. Your videos are some of the best on KZbin. If a repair takes 90 minutes so be it, if it's 15 minutes again, it is what it is. Your focus should be on the quality of work, not the duration. I can only speak for myself when it comes to my time, but of you post a long video, I just watch it when I have more time. Keep doing what you and stop listening to people whining about how long they are. Some of us are hear to learn. Length and details provide that learning. Keep up the amazing work and content.

Absolutely! I don't know what's the deal with these 15 minute vids - you ain't gonna show everything you wanna show, you ain't gonna say you want to say, quality loss is dramatic. Even the most renowned KZbinrs went this way, that's why I don't watch them anymore! They advertised themselves as a better version of a Discovery Channel, they ended up in doing stuff that's even worse: fast forwarding *every damn part of a video*, making their content targeted effectively at toddlers. The truth is, folks are getting dumber and dumber. Keeping focus for more than 5 minutes is a "remarkable achievement" - so damn sad.

I was on a road trip. I came out of the motel in the morning to get breakfast. A guy was taking a steering gear box off of a 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive Ford truck. It had a trailer with a boat on it. The shaft from the steering gear box connected to the pitman arm was broken. He said he located one across town. He would’ve had to walk about a mile and a half to get it. He had some friends with him. It was a hot day. I took chairs out of my truck and handed them all water. I took the guy to get the steering gear box. In my 96 Dodge extra cab Cummins truck. On the way out of the parking lot my wife stepped out of the door and saw me leaving with a stranger. I stopped and told her the story. I told the guy I didn’t want her to think I was being car jacked. 😂. The gear box broke in the parking lot. We both thought lucky it happened there and not on the freeway at 70 mph. Whew.

It makes sense that the thing would break while maneuvering in a parking lot. Low speeds and wrestling the tires around rappidly puts a lot of strain on steering gear. It's really nice of a fellow to help out.

Hey Ray, little tip from a relatively lazy mechanic with these GM trucks and changing that pitman arm...just loosen the upper most bolt a few turns on the box, remove the other ones and the steering box actually pivot on that top bolt enough so you can get a socket with an impact on it to remove the nut and a proper puller.

all would have taken was hitting a pothole at speed and parts of that steering system could have come apart the conditions of the roads in the SE (SC is some of the worst) - especially after the storms can be really bad. Seen this on the interstates and on state highways

To me it’s all about trust. I understand a lot about mechanical stuff. I used to do all of my maintenance. Hell I used to change motors transmissions axles. Useless trivia time; The Pittman arm doesn't get its name from an individual, but rather from sawmill speak. The man who was in a pit below a log who pulled a saw through the wood to create boards was known as the pitman. The unconventional crank converts the turning motion of a sawmill water wheel to the saw's up and down motion.

I had an idler arm failure on a Ford Falcon at 70 mph on I44. I could still steer, but each time you reached center, the steering would flop to the opposite direction. After swerving wildly from one side of the highway to the other several times and nearly overturning two or three times, I finally came to a stop. Wildest ride I ever took in an automobile. I was truly blessed to survive it.

​@@cengeb, state mandated inspections aren't a guarantee of getting unsafe vehicles off the road. South Carolina ended their inspection program some years back because it was so ineffective and corrupt, 'scrape the old sticker and paste a new one' on a clunker for a bribe, so to speak.

@@JM-lk6wo Jersey used to check all kinds of stuff, now it's just emissions. They used to look at wipers, life car front end up a tad, and by hand pull on front wheels to find this kind of stuff,headlight alignment,brake stopping on a device that measured the stopping ,all taillights, look under neath to check for exhaust mods, it took some time. No charge, state run part of registration fees. Now state is just doing emissions..hook up scan tool, read the number and stick a sensor into the exhaust. if they catch a cracked windshield the flag it. We have a lot of junkers on the roads that shouldn't be. Go to Germany for a week drive around, come back here, and see how bad this place is..we are 2nd world and falling fast.

It almost looks like the steering gearbox had been recently replaced. The bolt ends are free of surface rust and the housing has a different shade of oxidation on it. Whoever swapped it should have noticed the badly worn steering components. Good job Rainman.

Several years back, we got two of these GMT800 Silverados at an insurance auction. One was a 1999 and the other was a 2002. They were both of the same config, with the extended cab and 7 foot(?) bed - the expected bed with this configuration. The 1999 had a 4.8 engine and was a K/4WD version. This one had the 3 door config same as the truck in this video. The 2002 was a 2WD with a 5.3 and had 4 doors. The 4.8 was actually quite peppy, was a fun truck to drive.

What I find interesting, is that you know that this excessive wear didn’t just happen, and the owner must have known there was a problem for quite some time. So you have to wonder what finally compelled him/her to finally bring it in for inspection and repairs. It’s amazing how long individuals will knowingly drive around in vehicles in total and dangerous disrepair.

I am so thankful that we here in Sweden have mandatory inspections. When car is new, the first inspection is after three years. The next one after two and then every(!) year. They go through a lot - lights, suspensions, steering, rust on vital parts, seat belts, emissions, brakes and more. To make sure the car is safe. You can pass, or fail for minor fault so you have to fix it before next inspection, or fail with larger fault so you have to do a revisit for another inspection within 30 days, or major fault that will give the car a driving ban and thus you need to tow it away. And if you do not do your yearly inspection, then there will be an automatic driving ban on the car and you are ONLY allowed to drive it directly to an inspection. What amazes me most is that there are really surprisingly many cars that actually fail on the first inspection. Only three years old! Ball joints are a common problem, especially on some models/brands.

Back when I was still driving my 64 Olds here in Brazil, I was flabbergasted to find mechanics here routinely rebuild tie rod ends, ball joints, idler arms and pitman! Inexpensive too! I see in the USA there are T3 headlight restorers too. I agree with some others here, older and classic vehicles were made to last longer.

Very nice repair and just in time from what I saw. The customer was very, very blessed that the pitman arm didn’t come loose and have no steering at any speed. Those kind of things are happening as you drive past those older models. People drive those models till the vehicle are a death trap on wheels.

Thank God here in the UK we have yearly checks on vehicles where faults like these are found well before they get to this stage and then repaired or replaced. Im amazed at the state of disrepair some of the vehicles and defects that are still on the road that you have to work on Ray. !! The roads in the USA must be extremely dangerous !

Hi Ray, For the future replacement / repair of the steering pitman arm area I recommend that you locate the protection seal between the steering sector shaft and the pitman arm to protect the debris / weather element to build up in the sector shaft to seal area cause the steering to leak. Great Job as usual...

I find diagonal cutters work the best for pulling cotter pins, you squeeze just enough to bite then lever it out. If all else fails you can just cut the end with they eye. Also I really think Klein makes the best

Beautiful truck! Mine’s an 02 HD with the 6.0 gasser. Same color, but 4 door ext cab with 160k on the odometer. Also mine has lived its life in Alaska and Wisconsin so it’s got some rust but not bad. Just had the front end rebuilt 10k ago so it’s good to go. Next up is new exhaust manifolds (ugh) and fan clutch (easy). Great job keeping these great trucks on the road Ray!

I started hearing a clunky noise from my 92 silverado. I decided to replace the whole front components. As I was pulling it apart, the right front lower ball joint came apart. It appeared the only thing holding it together was the sway bar. I thank our good lord every day I'm still alive.

Well the good thing right now Ray is seeing you set a great example for being an honest mechanic that puts customer safety first. That is great to see early in the morning. Now the bad morning thing is that we are getting another round of freezing rain, sleet and snow mixed. We had that yesterday also. Heard the crews talking about backing up a couple hills on two of the major hiways (US 61) that are a couple miles away. They do that backing thing usually when they are glazed and the plow blades can't scrape the ice loose. It was raining last night when I headed to bed so my guess is that it washed all the salt and sand off the roadways. Good ol Midwest US living. You all stay safe and healthy.

Fond memories of greasing the seemingly infinite number of zerks on late 60's and seventies Jeeps. Along with the ones on that you did on that truck there were the upper and lower ball joints, Spring shackles, driveshafts, all the U-Joints, the clutch linkage and transfer case shift linkage. I may have forgotten one or two in the list, memory loss due to age.

I had a truck exactly like that, a 2000 2500 non-HD extended cab, except it was a 5 speed manual and had 4x4 on the floor. Carpeted, power windows and seats. I loved that truck. I sold it at 237k miles for the same amount that I originally paid with 86k miles.

I changed the idler arm, Pittman arm and all 6 tie rod pcs on my Astro at about 260k miles, used cheap rockauto parts. Was easy restoring of steering for less than $100.

Regarding how to pull off the arm from the pier steering shaft (on a 4x4 truck), I had luck getting a puller from Kragen. It won't work with the bolt that came with it because there is no clearance. However if you get a grade 8 short cap screw from the hardware store and screw it in upside down, it will give you the clearance to back off the arm. I would post a picture if I could.

Hey Ray, it's frightening to ponder how many vehicles like this share the roads we drive. In BC here, the only time a vehicle is inspected is if someone wants to register a vehicle from outside the province. No inspection is triggred with the sale of a vehicle already registered. Pretty scary stuff! Great video. Cheers!

Flexible hoses on a grease gun. Never really used much else. Seems like all the ones I have to do, can not be accessed with any type of solid tip. Amazing .

Agree with TB, make the vids as long as they need to be. A suggestion if it's cool: A rubber grease nipple hose or an articulated metal one! Disadvantage: sometimes needs 2 hands. Advantage : It won't breat for 25 years, mine's 50 years old and still AOK. Cheers from Australia :)

Ray, it'd be cool for you to take a poll on, how many viewers you have saved THOUSAND$$. I know I have saved a bunch learning from your KZbin the past 2 years. Two of my favorites: back at the other shop, you pulled the complete dash out to change the AC condenser because of a little temp sensor. The other was when you had to keep welding lug nugs on that Buick wagon sleeper. And of course the Subaru broken bolt. Love the fact "can't " isn't in your vocabulary. Always look forward to your videos. Love your straightforward honesty and humor. You're doing more for the community than you know..Shoutout to Lauren! 👊👍

I'm glad you stated the obvious to viewers of your videos: People think that if they do their oil changes but neglect to do the other components of their cars, everything is good to go. I overkill my maintenance on my cars. Pay me now (cheap option) or pay me later (expensive option) if you will.

Ray- Be VERY careful about using those "Jet engine" type heaters. A mechanic friend was draining the gas tank on a motor home and the fumes were ignited by the heater. He was very badly burned, and his garage and house were totally burned to the ground.

Tate and Lyle's golden syrup. Use it to make "steamed golden". What you will need is a pressure cooker (ask Lauren if she's got one). Fun fact - my brother-in-law stipulated steamed golden as dessert at his wedding ! Caterers did an OK job, but you need LOTS of syrup, because the rest of the pudding soaks up the syrup. (They didn't really appreciate this). Mr McNicol's name is pronounced MACK (as in truck) NICK (as in steal) and OL (as in LOL). Scotsman, or Scottish heritage. And a man of good taste.
