It’s all relative. Might make a good farm truck, not a daily driver - depends on needs: I could use a truck like that, though I’m not a fan of Ford trucks with the engine half buried under the firewall, personally.

Yep, sounds like an F-150. Lifter tick, tick, tick. I think Ford wanted a recognizable sound, kind of like a Harley has. I had a 2000 F-150 with the 5.4 Triton that had the exact same tick. Nothing was "wrong with it," it just had a tick. At 224,000 miles and 2 simultaneous head gasket failures, I opted to install a Jasper re-manufactured 5.4 Triton crate engine and it too had the tick. Just a plug for Jasper, this motor is a great option for engine replacement, imo. It's not overly expensive and they come with a 100,000 mile warranty on internals and they will pay for labor if something were to require fixing.

@NerfCraft
@NerfCraft 2 ай бұрын
@bradhaines3142 I'll take mechanical repairs over rust all day every day. Ultimately, engine and transmission replacements is really just turning bolts, but once the vehicle rusts away, there's just nothing left to fix.
@bradhaines3142
@bradhaines3142 2 ай бұрын
@@NerfCraft trucks these days have a lot of engine out repairs designed into them. i know an f150 has it down to under 2hrs to pull the drivetrain out of the body. you might be able to make a business of buying scrapped vehicles from the south and rusted vehicles from the north and putting them together as a complete car lol.
@NerfCraft
@NerfCraft 2 ай бұрын
@bradhaines3142 That would be an interesting business idea. 2hrs for a drive train swap is pretty impressive, but you'd hope most engine maintenance could be handled without pulling the engine. Of course you'd probably have to pull the engine for bottom end work, or any significant work, but stuff like timing, ignition, and fuel should be made to be pretty easily serviceable.

I had an expedition with the 4.6. That sounds more like a broken timing chain guide assembly. I also ran into the stuck lifter issue but used some ATF replacement of the oil and floored it in neutral a few times and it finally stopped ticking. Leaning towards guides being broken.

It'll show you a graph with a single horizontal line and 4/6/8(depending on engine) vertical points that represent the cylinders. Literally a case of "They don't make 'em like they used to!" My folks still have a '95 F150 that _still runs!_ And it sits under pine trees most of the time at this stage. I learned to drive in that truck, too. Beast of a pickup to learn in, but it certainly drove home (pardon the pun) the importance of knowing where all four corners of the vehicle are! ...That, and the effects of inertia on braking capability...

My 01 F150 4.6 has 297k on it and runs fine, uses 1.5-2 qts oil between 3k mile changes. Just did tie rod ends and ball joints. Short of it getting totaled, I'd never sell it.

I have a gallon of oil, a gallon of windshield fluid, a sealed bottle of brake fluid, and a gallon of pre-mix anti-freeze in a milk crate in the trunk of my car. Have not needed them yet, ten years on, but if I, or someone else I stop to help DOES need them? I got em. I also have a 4-way lug nut wrench, sledgehammer, and some common tools in there too. I feel like many people these days would not think that far ahead. Most people that have those are most likely trying "patch" a more serious problem. It also depends if the containers are open, and how much fluid is in them. A bunch of sealed containers may just be one of the few people that is actually thinking ahead and being prepared, or they are preparing to perform a service on their own vehicle. A half used jug of oil is almost certainly an indication of an oil leak or oil consumption. In the case of this F-150 owner in the video, the jugs were completely empty, because the owner just changed the oil, hence the fresh oil on the dipstick. Now I wouldn't be surprised at all if the engine leaks or burns oil, but that's not why he bought the oil.

Honestly it seems like it’s fairly solid all things considering, just rough around the edges. I think the ticking is probably from the cam phasers, they are a coming fault. The reason I think that is because the engine sounds fine for a bit after startup, those phasers operate on oil pressure.

@@Boga217 You could go tens of thousands of miles with a lot of bad parts, but should you? Worn or faulty parts could in some cases cause damage to other parts of the vehicle, so keeping up with regular maintenance will help your vehicle last longer, and work better. Also have to keep in mind the safety of yourself, as well as others on the road. You don't want to be the cause of someone getting injured or killed, just because you didn't want to spend a couple hundred bucks on suspension repairs, or other repairs for that matter.

There is a place in texas that rebuilds Jeeps to better then show room new. If the trucks motor is that bad you can always put a new drive train in it how about a new GM motor computer and so on. Its not uncommon to drop a whole different motor into something. Make one hella a sleeper for a state that doesn't do tail pipe inspections. My point is the frame looks great, the body could use some work to look good but its just looks. I was watching it cost 5k just to replace 1 tail light assembly on a new F150 and thats parts no labor. 5k for a tail light assembly, seriously thats not nessary to save on wire weight its overkill to put a computer in one but thats what ford has done.
