Well, Ray, I am a welder, for a gas supplier in the northeast. You claim to not to be a welder and have told us all, but you, sir, are not as bad as half the people that are “welders”, especially in the auto trade. You do you, sir 🫡 P.S.- please clean the old metal though 🤦🫣🫡

Ray, you reminded me of a welding job I did years ago. I was using my father-in-law's wire welder to reattach a muffler on our van. My new bride walked up as I was finishing, and said, "I didn't know you could weld!" I said, "Crawl under here and look, and you'll know I can't!" It looked like a porcupine, but it held.

I've been testing catalytic converters since the 1980s. One suggestion! When testing with the engine speed raised , have someone in the vehicle holding the engine speed at 2500 rpm, ( that is the engine speed i always do my testing), or have a tool to depress accelerator to desired speed, then raise vehicle, and note, record , temperatures. This gives greater accuracy. Letting engine speed drop back to idle, raising vehicle, and checking gives time for exhaust system to back to its original idle temperatures. In the 1980s, i didn't have the luxury of thermal camera, or infra red temp gun, i first used a pyrometer, then upgraded over the years to better diagnostic tools. Keep up the good work ! 👍👍

With all the issues that truck has/had, as you said it is amazing it made it all the way to Florida. Good that you're on it now before they try to head back. Starting with the driveshaft, I can only imagine what damage that would have done at highway speeds. I didn't know the ABS system also cut throttle in an event; very interesting. @@michaelpressman7203 I thought of that before he did-basically instantly, when I saw the traction light flash-and I don't do this for a living lol. I expected it to be a rear one, though, since it was pulling power. Why Ford in their infinite wisdom decided to make the engine reduce power to the rear wheels based on concern that the front was slipping is beyond me, but what he did once he realized what was happening was exactly right.

I love that you never hide the rusty bolts and nuts, and show the real thing. ray info about your welding 1. your not as bad as you think, you will never look like a factory weld because it is a robotic weld 2. one of the issues you have is space, so you are doing fine 3. another issue it you did not clean the weld area, use one of your right angle grinder with that brillow pad to get rid of the rust and coatings 4. if you get shitty welds try to increase the gas flow, oxygen is the bane of welding, remember MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas the gas is your flux also you having to go back and forth because you found new things should be the norm because you are finding the most important issue but there are more issues that are needed to fix it fully make sure you check both front sensors because it had a memory code for the front left as well

Dude this video saved my ass but not in the way you would think. I've been having some overheating issues on my 04 f150 and my catalytic converters have been throwing codes for a while now so I thought the back pressure was causing my overheating. After your test drive and showing that one of the symptoms was a lack of power which I didn't have I started considering other things. I feel actually stupid because I didn't even consider the thermostat and just jumped straight to the catalytic converters. I feel like a dum dum but I've got my problem solved now so thank you!

5:10 If people buy a refillable Keurig k-cup and transfer the Ray cup coffee to the refillable or just put a neon orange sticker on the left side of the Ray cup then it will trick the Keurig 2.0 machines to brew. Ordered a few weeks ago and got coffee mug and Nice & Shiny hoodie (love the hoodie) and brew the coffee using either method above. Excellent coffee. Just don't add 2 Ray cups to the refillable or the machine will complain about high pressure because the coffee is ground super fine.

I took on a project of rehabbing an old trailer some time ago (body not frame), and by the time I got near the end, my welds were looking quite a bit better, although still not amazing. I do agree, it does just need to work, but practice will help you learn a bit more how the feed rate and amperage change your welds. Cheers!

It's a Ford........nuff said lol Love your vids. Don't fret about the welding. I've been a certified welder for handy 40 years and exhaust is one of the most miserable jobs to do. If you use MIG, has to be really clean for a good job. Always hard to get the nozzle in, and if you do manage, usually can't see what you are doing on the back side. As someone earlier mentioned, just spot it until you have it done, then cap it if you want. Less chance of burning through or heat distortion. Used to use a torch and brazing rods or coat hangers way back before MIG was common lol.

Good Job. But they do make Clamps 1:1 & 2:1 etc. Fairly long stainless steel clamps. If you had cut the pipe just Slightly further back - so just pipe to pipe - with no flange - you could have just Clamped it together. No welding required. And almost guaranteed no exhaust leaks. Butt Joint; Lap Joint Clamps available for not much money at all.

Ray - you indicated that coolant was getting into the #7 spark plug. This sparks an interest to me. Due to the fact, I own the exact type of truck but the STX stile. You also indicated the where coolant leak was coming from. Every repair have significant interest to the over all operation of the vehicle. Could you better explain the coolant leak and how it reached plug holes opposite of side of the leak. I've scratched my head over this problem for some time now, that I'm losing hair over- it . Thanks for your time. Cause what you do in your repairs open the doors to problem solving for others with similar mechanical problems. Thanks again, Jim

I've been a professional welder for 16 years and I think the easiest way to get an attractive weld doing a butt weld on a thin pipe would be to just tap it. You tack it on either ends then move right below your top tack hit it with the welder remain stationary sit in your puddle long enough to get good penetration move down a little then do it again until you made it down to the bottom tack then start up top on the other side and do it again all the way down. It's not the way i would do it today but it's for sure how i would have done it 11 years ago and would work well for you.

Just a heads up Ray, some OE's will throw codes for Catalyst efficiency when fitting a non California Emissions compliant Catalytic converter on a vehicle that originally had it, because they have very close tolerances on the amount of oxygen levels. F150's don't seem to care from my experience but I just didn't want this to bite you with some other brands that have different PCM programming depending on the Catalysts fitted. I got burnt like that on a Jaguar.

@@bradhaines3142 Actually it was because of availability during the pandemic, we couldn’t get a proper one so we went for the other one and then couldn’t figure out why it kept setting the code still for catalyst efficiency despite the levels of gas coming out of the tail pipe looking good on our gas analyzer. It was ever so much lower by a tiny amount with the CARB catalytic converter but was enough for the PCM to cry like less that 1/2 a part per million on Hydro Carbons. We do a lot of work on performance muscle cars with Carbeurators, so that is why we have the gas analyzer. To properly tune the carbs. Rich isn’t always better but a lot of muscle car guys don’t understand that. Rich = more wear, more carboned up valves all while polluting un necessarily. Yes, when you are mashing it to the floor, temporarily richer but not at idle. You can still have it sound tough without burning people's eyes at the stop-lights and killing the environment more than it does not running Catalysts.

Ray setting his shirt on fire, reminded me of when i was on course with the Army reserve (ironically enough for Vehicle Tech). We were doing oxy acetylene brazing, now we were supplied with these cheap (flammable) coveralls. Also we were still wearing our highly polished combat boots. Think by now most will see where this is going, yup hot slag landed on one of the guys combat boots, then proceeded to catch on fire. Of course the one it was happening to was too focused on his task to realize. Which is an example of why you should never do welding or anything of that nature by yourself. He was fine, on combat boot was shinier then the other, and he needed a new pair off flammable coveralls.

Ray, I know that maybe it's a personal preference to weld exhaust pieces together but you could have made this a lot easier and simpler and probably less time consuming if you just would have cut the welds off from each and of the catalytic converter another half inch to 1 inch further than you did and got to the main part of the exhaust because you ended up cutting in the big area where the welds were. You should have just cut it off another inch down the line on each end just immediately after the big bellowed ends right as they narrowed down to the exhaust. Then, all you would have had to do was use two exhaust couplers that were about 3 to 4 in long and you could have just used a couple exhaust clamps on each side of the catalytic converter and been done with the whole project. You could have easily slipped the exhaust couplers over the existing exhaust and then just simply slipped the catalytic converter inside the coupler on each end and just used two clamps on each end of the converter along with the exhaust couplers and that's it. You ended up making it a bigger project than it needed to be. Maybe even more expensive too depending on what you charged to weld that all together. You could have more money in the time it took you to do this. Also, I hope you didn't charge the client for the 02 sensor since it was your fault for not wqnting to wait to remove it. Since it was just replaced recently, there's no reason that you should not have been able to get that out of there fairly easily without damaging it. So, I would not be wanting to pay for that as a client if you were charging me. I'd be pretty pissed off.
