To be honest I got lost after Ray pulled down the sun visor. At todays prices I can well imagine how much a new truck like that would cost if it were special ordered and built to these same specs and options. Good job Ray even though I only have a vague idea what you're talking about. My best takeaways are the quality factory installs on the controls, interior panels and the overall tidiness of the truck interior.

Eventually consider a standby generator with a transfer switch. I'm in So. Fl. and when we moved into a new home one of the first things I did was have a 22KW standby gen installed with natural gas. They also run on LP. It's amazing TBH. If the power goes out you don't even know it. It runs the entire house just as it would from the utility. I don't have to touch anything it's all automatic. It wasn't cheap but it was worth it.

IDEA!! Are you going to have some kind of grommets in the front side (or bottom) of your bed box as a pass-thru to run cords to your house during hurricane conditions to keep box lid from being opened and flooding your box?
@v12alpine Жыл бұрын
I see ALOT of voltage drop, enough that the rear battery is still discharging at full load when connected to the front. I would highly recommend a larger gauge cable from front to rear and pretty much all of them in the box. Also double up on the relay or use a much larger one. I also question the differing pulley sizes and unequal power share. Lastly, take a FLIR gun to the entire setup next time you do a full load.

I'm guessing that as long as you have the right gauge wires and proper grounding then you'll be safe from any electrical fires. One time I made the mistake of leaving my aftermarket one gauge battery to body ground wire disconnected and my factory vehicle body to engine ground almost fully burned to a crisp. I had a 700 watt RMS sound system I installed with one gauge power and ground wires. I chose one gauge to minimize voltage drop plus I couldn't find any zero gauge wire to use at the time.
@handyman1957 Жыл бұрын
This is the most important comment. Wire size from the Alternators to the rear batteries have to be able to carry the amp max amp load that those alternators can output. If not, you will have voltage and amperage drop at minimum. At max, they will melt and you will have a very bad day.
@LeewardStudios Жыл бұрын
Cole Herse used to have a dual solenoid for boats that would automatically disconnect your boat starting battery bank from the banks used for radios etc. it also had a charge circuit to ensure the staring battery bank charged first then the “spare” bank. That way keeps the alternator from getting burned out. I used it on ambulances to isolate the charges and lights and the pure sine inverter in the rear or box so that it would. It nuke the starting batteries for the diesel engine. It did require us to ensure the devices were on completely separate positive power busses but could use a common ground

Your were actually correct when you called the "solenoid" a relay. A solenoid is a coil that moves an actuating arm to do something mechanical. A relay is a solenoid where the actuating arm is connected to contacts to break or make a circuit. So, mechanical relays have solenoids built into them. We also have solid state relays, but that is another story. Hope this helps. Love your videos!

I am loving this truck. It just keeps getting better! One thing though. From experience I would recommend having a voltage sensitive relay (or integrating a relay into the ignition live circuit) to couple and decouple the primary system to the reserve battery. That would automatically connect them when the engine is running to charge and disconnect when the engine is off so you don’t accidentally leave it coupled and run down the starter batteries. You can then use the switch you have to override it if you want to. Sooner or later as it is you will forget and be left with 3 drained batteries an da truck that won’t start.

That way you cannot accidentally leave them connected when the truck is not running. This prevents the auxiliary system from being able to prevent the truck from starting due too accidental battery drain.

All the extra switches, solenoids and wiring reminds me of my marina dock slip partner. He's tried to do the same thing on his boat for years. He's played with using different inverters, batteries, etc to make AC from his DC boat batteries "while at anchor, away from dock power," main engines off and not running his diesel gen set.. He replaces his five 8-D's every two to three years and they're a mix of (expensive) AGM's and deep cycle. The concept is noble, but it takes hours to recharge the batteries after every deep cycle and shortens the battery life.. In the real world it creates lots of complications for him, potential failure points and unexpected pitfalls..

Very impressive work by Ray. I wonder if the wire sizes are correct though. For 115 amps, 1/0 AWG or larger would typically be used (200 amps require 3/0) and the wires don't look like that. Too small a wire will result in undesirable voltage drops (which Ray's multi-metering is showing) as well as create a fire risk ... not good when that's right next to a large tank of diesel fuel. It would be worthwhile to have an electrical engineer (a FP&L employee would be good) take a look at the setup and verify it.

I do have a gas generator, and a few 12 converters to connect to my trucks system, soon to get an additional battery and alternator soon.
@basbass429 Жыл бұрын
The setup is awesome, i think the fun factor of building something custom that works is probably most important to you and brings interesting content for us. As others mentioned, only required improvement is ventilation to the battery and inverters. With the lid closed, high risk of overheating and you probably need it when a hurricane is around. A stormproof slightly off the ground (against flooding) shed some distance from the house with a diesel generator and a battery (and ventilation)? And carry a very diesel small generator in the truck where the battery and inverters are now, as extra backup emergency power elsewhere? Which is still much lighter than your custom setup. But your custom setup has the "cool" factor. Just a generator is boring.

Ray, you have done a great job with your DIY power system. The ongoing problem you will have however, is that a 12V nominal system is HUGELY stressed by the loads you may put on it. Also, even with starter cable diameter wire, the resistive losses are substantial. A 12V, 100Ahr battery will only deliver a kilowatt for about 40 minutes and that translates to about 750W for 40 minutes because of the losses in cables and the Inverter/s. Yes, it is a given you will run your truck engine when using your emergency system. All understood. Bottom line, if you were starting with a 48V or 96V battery system then your overall system stresses would be way-way less (at least 1/10'th). TESLA has just yesterday released their Cybertruck with a 48V generic power reticulation (not 12V). The main power-train battery is roughly 400V. You might want to up-inform yourself of what is going on in the EV revolution Sir. It was very exciting to see the Cybertruck outpacing a Porsche 911 on a quarter mile stretch WHILE TOWING ANOTHER PORSCHE 911 ON A TRAILER. This is not about drag racing, but very much how expeditious use of energy can carry the day. I so enjoy watching your show several times a week. I do not mind your miffs, muffs and dropsy interludes and very much appreciate the accumulated knowledge you kindly share with us all. A lot of people are concerned over the alternator imbalance. I think it's probably a good thing. Let your secondary alternator do the heavy work while the primary alternator takes it easy and won't burn out as fast - assuming that the secondary alternator has a higher amp rating (can't remember from past videos). Your wiring might be too small but I doubt you plan on running max output for hours on end. It would be just fine for compressor startup loads on refrigerators which have probably double or triple normal running currents (yes I know it could actually draw many hundreds of in rush amps if you scoped it out on startup in milliseconds)

For a system like that I’d highly recommend a Dc-Dc charger. That back battery could receive the correct absorption voltage and potentially charge faster. A smart shunt like a Victron 712 would also be a nice touch. T class main fuse for sure for high interrupt rating.

Funny how mechanics complain when a customer's car has one aftermarket device in it. "I'm pretty sure the nuclear generating station in the trunk isn't causing the parasitic draw."

I have no idea what you're doing. But I'll give you a thumbs up because it seems you know what you're doing. 😁

When this project is finished I can't imagine how much charge you can get. Let's just hope you don't need it in an emergency.
