If that right rear was that many turns loose, one gotta wonder how loose left rear is. If it was me, i'd have to check as i could just not leave it unchecked. That trans fluid exchange machine was neat, never seen one of those before. Also its a rare treat to see one of these GMT800 chassi trucks in that good condition, usually their all rotted in half with the rear half of the frame looking like the surface of the moon from all the rust damage with the rear cross member, cab floor and corners beeing close to nonexistant.

For over 30 years I worked for a co that had a fleet of over 75 superduties. By trial & error our co learned the hard way ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$) that the way to make auto trans last forever was to change oil & filter every 30K. Doing a full trans flush & getting the bad oil out made these trans last & last & last. The Boss said he used to have nightmares seeing that OD light flashing. !

That is a miracle the way that engine runs with all the miles. You took a hell of a risk flushing that trans with 400k miles. I would have just changed the filter and the fluid that came out of the pan, and put the conditioner in it. The conditioner kind of revitalizes the old fluid. I am astonished that it worked as well as it did. Great job! Thank goodness. If that thing is maintained properly, it might make a million miles. It is obviously a good one. At the price of trucks now days, you should have a very happy customer.

A) is that the original motor? B) its a flordia truck, put that same truck in NY it would not have lasted that long before the cab fell off the frame or rust took its death toll. Your lucky if you get 5 years out of a truck there. Here in kcmo you dont find trucks or truck parts in the junk yard if they are they get parted out really fast.

I got 01 sierra single cab short bed in mass...its equally as salty out here and that's why you do see a lot of these trucks in junkyards around here.. They typically drive them there rotted in half😂.. i caught mine before it was totally gone got it for 2 GS just before covid drove it 2 years and kept the chassis oiled (I think never being "undercoated helped a lot). I did some bed rails and cross members and shackle brackets now its solid truck long story short the way to keep any full chassis truck in the salt belt is relentless washing in the salt catchers and maintenance

Ray, Since you usually do a review of what you have done and also usually invite us to heap our criticisms upon you I have a few comments to offer. 1) No mention of having torqued the wheel nuts at the end. Deferring said torque application made sense since wheel would have to come off again if axle seal was still leaking, but the job isn't finished if you did not complete the final torque; 2) No mention of the maxed out oil pressure gauge; 3) Up or down? You should have gone up first. You have taught us in other videos that saving time is important. Vehicle already up in the air - putting it two feet higher and then only having to drop it once takes less time than dropping it two feet, raising it four feet and then dropping it four feet. Please tell me that you recorder that video on a Friday so that I can maintain my high esteem for your mental acumen on a simple lapse of focus due to the upcoming weekend.

I had my own shop for a few years and can identify with the effort. One thing that I would recommend, is to buy your brake cleaner in bulk and get a pressurizable spray can (HF has them now) for dispensing. Not as video friendly as the flying empty can, but far more cost effective and less going into the waste stream. Just a thought... CRC has it by the gallon and other suppliers in larger quantities. I've never had a complete fluid exchange kill a transmission. I believe the myth comes from people trying to save an already failed transmission by replacing the fluid. New fluid will not restore a burned clutch pack, nor will it turn back a blown sprag clutch. Any time I installed a used transmission, I always replaced all the fluid--and the filter. Pan gasket and external seals to boot. Easy when the trans is on the bench.

I was wondering about the filter, after seeing how black the old fluid was… On balance, I probably would have turned that one down. Intergalactic mileage and clear evidence of recent shoddy maintenance are not a good mix. I have experience of “you were last to touch it. It was fine up to then!” I’m sure there’s a transmission specialist nearby, or a more desperate outfit, that he could have suggested they bring it to.

I've flushed 2 trans with fluid that nasty (200k in factory fluid) and they were fine until I sold the car. I found my dad had never changed the OE fluid in his car at 180k and I flushed it (unserviceable filter). No problems. I don't believe the "don't flush it" thing... If it fails, it already had problems.

Thank you Mr RainmanRay not only did I enjoy this video so much I did watch it twice double the enjoyment viewing . Btw the more you demonstrate the fluid machine’s operation the better I can appreciate it’s performance and real world application and functionality, cool factor to boot . Thanks

Ray, if by some weird quirk of fate you were eventually no longer able to perform miracles on ageing pieces of ‘automotive craftsmanship’ (junk!), simply turn your talents to stand-up comedy. You would be an overnight success! I never fail to get a good laugh out of your cleverly observed humour.

More likely a failed stepper motor in the gauge cluster than a bad sensor, but could be both. Kindof depends on a case by case basis. GM cluster stepper motors are notorious for failure.

I have a 2006 GMC 2500hd 4x4 single cab fleet truck with 6.0 vortex that I bought brand new. Now it has 195k on the odometer still runs strong I change the oil every three months or 3000 miles ( been doing this since new) changed coolant, transmission transfer case front and rear end many times also flushed the brake fluid a couple of times. I have the posi rear end and it takes expensive gear oil. Seeing the seal leak that much gear oil makes my wallet hurt. They are good trucks if taken care of.

That was a great repair Ray. I understand your trepidation servicing thet transmission but don't blame you given the color of the fluid. I've never seen it that black before. Glad it worked out ok. Cheers!
