Eric O has this long hockey stick shaped steel bar that gives more leverage to pull control arms down. It goes below the control arm and has a hook at mid length to snag the control arm. Old school but it seems to work great.

I'm shocked you could even fit yourself inside. I have to say, all the years I used to work on cars. I never felt the need to fully climb inside the trunk to do shocks. Wasn't there a manual release inside the truck you could have pulled? As far as I know, most cars have a manual release inside just in case of something like locking yourself inside the trunk or being kidnapped.

There are some....well used to be...good OE parts suppliers. For years I used Tokico struts 'blues' as replacements on Japanese brand cars. Wonderful product. Put a loop of ratchet strap around the end of the suspension arm and stand on it to pull the arm down. A whole body weight is more than you can apply with a bar and a strap is less likely to slip out of position keeping those oh so vital fingers attached to your hands.

I had to chuckle at what we call the old “drive drop” (neutral drop). A group of buddies “borrowed” without permission one of their grandfathers small ranger pickup and went joyriding and raising hell. They were an hour from home doing burn outs egging one buddy the driver to do better so he pops it in neutral revved the engine tight and pulled her down in first gear. He felt something not right and got sick to his stomach when he looked in the side mirror and rear wheels not turning. They had someone tow the truck back to the grandfathers house and pushed it back into the garage like nothing ever happened 🤣

Borrowed a quote from Chester cheetah. A neutral drop in an automatic wont always break something. That depends on the transmission. Like with a ford trans, you can fix a shift issue is some situations by dropping it into park at 5 mph, if you hear the park pawl stutter, that is ideal. The vibrations can shake the governor valve free.
