I was at a Jaguar meet one day, sat having a drink and chatting to some folk. One of them proudly told me that he worked in the design office. He showed me his phone and pulled up a couple of 3D renderings of a fuel pump that he'd recently completed the design on. "So what consideration do you give for future maintenance, access and the like?" I asked him. I was greeted with a blank stare. "You know, how does a mechanic access that pump if it fails and needs to be replaced?". Eventually he replied... "Well, I wouldn't know, I don't work on the shop floor".
@steventrostle1825 Жыл бұрын
Yep Mechanics are on the low end of the totem pole which makes the owner liable for an enormous repair bill due to excess labor charges. DEsigners and engineers never (or seldom) think about that.
@GrayRaceCat Жыл бұрын
Many parts are designed to be "Lifetime" parts, (the definition of "Lifetime" is rather fluid.) One example is the "lifetime fuel filter" in some vehicles that is a part of the in-tank fuel pump assembly. Designed specifically to NOT be replaced so that the maker can claim lower lifetime emissions from that line of vehicles. If you don't open the fuel system (in any way) to replace a fuel filter, then you don't release fuel vapor into the atmosphere, and makers are actually claiming that as an emissions reduction(!) and have been for a number of years now. The designer from Jaguar knew exactly what you were asking, he just dodged the question.
@tonyjover Жыл бұрын
@@GrayRaceCat whilst I don't doubt some of what you say is true, there are many examples where it is not. One example is suspension bolts which cannot be removed without having to dismantle half of the complete assembly which is easily addressed on reassembly simply by inserting the bolts from the other side. There are many such examples on cars from all manufacturers - just ask any experienced mechanic.
@GrayRaceCat Жыл бұрын
@@tonyjover you and I are on the same page, I simply provided one example of (IMHO) poor design with reference to fuel pumps, as in your example. Another was the first generation Volvo XC70 fuel pump. In my 38 years as a mechanic I ran into many instances of poor design causing extra work for the mechanic (me) and extra cost for the owner.

As for the high fuel pressure issue, the Jags use a differential sensor reading between the intake manifold pressure sensor and the fuel rail pressure sensor. 23:45 ohh my good Ray, you need urgently a A/C technical course, same as a doctors keeps learning new skills and medical breakthroughs, this is a DENSO compressor and as most new versions they are "clutchless", that means that the main shaft of the compressor is always rotating with the engine, it is turned ON by a "displacement valve" that receives a pulse by modulation signal from the PCM or the A/C module! The voltage of this PBM signal is between 4.5-10v depending on the temperature inside the cabin! The A/C module is not bad either the compressor, it's the displacement valve that sometimes get stuck and needs to be replaced!

Also, if the compressor was previously replaced because of internal failure, the condenser, drier, and expansion valve should have been replaced, and lines flushed. And one day I replaced the Struts and found a bracket holding the brake pipe that had Jaguar stamped on it. So I kept it and gave it to him to keep 🙂

That is one of the benefits of having your own shop, you can take time to find and solve intermittent problems on customers vehicles. I hope the old compressor still has warranty left on it, but probably not since it was installed by another shop and you will have a core charge. What you said when you were removing the wheel might happen when Lauren watches the video. Lol It looks like you are busy enough to be able to hire another mechanic or part time help so you don't have to put as many hours in at the shop. You need time to rest or frustration is going to build I know that from being the only licensed mechanic in a trucking company's shop and spending hours in the shop and getting a few hours sleep in the car when you could. The company had over 120 trucks and wouldn't hire another mechanic after our other licensed mechanic had an accident in the spring and ended up with a brain injury. We didn't know that they were working on a deal to selling all the trucks and trailers to another trucking company that had there own shop and mechanics. Later that fall we were told one evening to clear our toolboxes out or they were going to be loaded with the rest off shop equipment. We had to rescue the trailer mechanics tools since they had gone home for the day, because the company did a midnight move that night. By the sounds of it the shop equipment wasn't part of the deal with the other company and there lease on the building was up.

Hey Ray, gosh your customer must really love this car because it's a nightmare to diagnose except for the most determined (you). CIBC I've seen the previous videos on it. I saw wife unit driving up and i thought for sure she was going to park in front of you. Man that was not an easy repair. Thanks again for the great content and as always something I can learn from. First lesson, don't buy a Jag! Cheers!

My 2011 Corolla’s intermittent AC was caused by an intermittent radiator fan. I’d hit a bump, nudge it by hand, or drive fast enough to get it turning with wind speed and it would continue spinning on its own, restoring AC. The controller would cut power to the compressor if it sensed the radiator fan wasn’t turning. I didn’t know what was going on until it got bad enough that the car would overheat in traffic.

Great find ray those are the fun ones been there before even had customers give me unlimited gas told to keep the vehicle till I finally got it to act up and able to repair it before I give it back hard to find techs willing to go that extra miles

trick for holding the wire on the bolt Ray is to use a but of plumbers tape PTFE work if needed
@johnies Жыл бұрын
Great idea Robert Hellen! I form safety wire (stainless) into "U" shape and put on as many as needed to get a torqueable bite. A little "teffy" will make it so much easier. You had my brain doing gymnastics trying to figure out how metal strapping and Teflon tape would help. Then I re-read what you wrote and realized it was just Teflon tape. Where I'm from, plumbers tape is 1" galvanized strapping with holes every inch or so, used to strap pipes, water heater, etc. to keep them plumb/secure.

I have found that the best way to cure driveline problems in a Jaguar XJS is to replace the drive line with a GM 350 engine and TH350 transmission. Clears all of those weird Jaguar engine problems RIGHT up!!!! Also, it makes it easier to find parts for it when you are travelling in the middle of the American deserts. There used to be a kit for this back in the day. Don't know if they are still around (haven't bothered looking it up just for a joke :) )

It's so tight and hard to work on your average mechanic will not do a good job if they do it at all and just take the money.Ive seen it in Las Vegas here they charge the person a large amount of money and the problem still isn't fixed. Your an exceptional person you go the extra mile to fix the problem. Keep up the great work Ray enjoy I feel the pain wish you and the wife Unit the best Take care.

As inaccessible as this compressor is, new o-rings on the hose blocks would have been a good practice. Also, given the non-oem nut you found and the loosey-goosey rear cap screw, it's not surprising that the mounting hole thread quality was suspect, especially if the capscrews thread into something "aluminium" (it is a Jag LOL). The way to address that would have been test fits of those fasteners and possibly heli-coil installation between removal of the old compressor and installation of the new compressor. But you field-expedient method seems to have generated enough grip to hold some torque. Most aftermarket replacement compressors come with a big red label that says replace the receiver-dryer along with the compressor or forfeit the compressor warranty.

From what I could find the xjs fuel injectors don't meter fuel by volume, instead they use a timed pulse, so they rely on the Fuel Pressure Regulator and ECU (sensor) to determine the length of the pulse to inject the proper amount of fuel. If indeed the rail pressure is too high you should see a rich condition (this can also result in oil dilution so you may want to check the oil level). The FPR works with the ECU and the rail has a return line to the fuel pump. If the regulator, sensor, ECU is faulty or the return line is obstructed you can have too much pressure in the fuel rail.
