Nissan had an engine like this; The 1988 Nissan Stanza 2 liter 4-cylinder engine also had 8 spark plugs. I had this car in high school and it was so much fun teasing the local farm boys who had big block v8 pickup trucks. I'd taunt them with "My car has 8 plugs in it too" and they'd refuse to believe it and when I'd show them, the look on their faces was priceless.

Even if this Eric dude was the first to use the phrase, unless he successfully trademarked the phrase, there can be no complaints. And if Erik HAD trademarked it, it would only prevent people from using it as their own trademark, and only in markets / legal jurisdictions where he successfully filed. - Unless, of course, the "offended" party has a lot of money and lawyers and can afford to SLAPP some small local business down over something like "Taco Twosday" to try and own "Taco Tuesday". It can also help if you have enough money to hire a famous sports dude to make commercials trying to portray yourself as the 'little guy' trying to 'free' the phrase. Sorry, I went off in to a rant about Taco Bell being corporate jerks...

@@RainmanRaysRepairs Hey rainmanrayrepairs, have you ever made a power steering line by copying a old rusted one? Is it possible? Can you find it the part? I live in Wisconsin. So it would be hard to find one in a junk yard. I suppose I can try. For a 1990 to 1993 honda accord. There 4 lines that go into the gearbox. One was replaced already because the part was bought new. The first one on the far right goes to the pump. The remaining two go into the speed sensor (which I can't find new parts for).

I’ve recently had a bad experience with a shop that is supposedly specialists on Toyota. Charged me for new brakes complete with shoes, drums and hardware. Also charged at Toyota OEM prices. 7 times returning before I said enough and did them myself. That’s when I discovered I got screwed. Like I said . Hard to trust.

I think that might just be econoboxes... The cars aimed towards the "enthusiast crowd" tend to be simple and have ample space in them - even including my Tiburon, which most people don't consider a proper enthusiast car (what with it being a front wheel drive coupe with a small V6). Plenty of access, relatively easy to work on as these things go. Parts are laid out logically, most parts are generic enough to be able to be substituted; even a full ECU replacement doesn't look like it would be outside of my skill range. This is what I'd expect cars to be. But nope... Compare that with my mother's Citroen C3.. hoo boy, most components are crammed so close to the firewall and beneath cowlings that I almost get the urge to drop the engine for what should be minor jobs. Plastic parts everywhere, covers on everything, specialist tools expected, and what should be "in plain sight" is still a pain to get to because of the tiny hood on the engine bay. Or the mess that is the newest Ford Focus with the 1.0 EcoBoom. And the myriad integrated computer systems which will refuse to work if one of the modules is swapped out without the manufacturer's blessing. It seems to me that the manufacturers of "boring" economical cars will take any steps they can to not only make the cars hard to work on yourself, but make simple jobs intentionally difficult in order to be able to extract more money out of customers in parts, service and repair costs. They sell the cars at "affordable" prices and woo them with economy figures, then gouge the customer on financing interest rate and required service, and make sure to make the cars out of materials that will fail as soon as the manufacturer's liability period is over, and make the car uneconomical to repair. This is why I'll likely only be buying used "enthusiast models" in the future, why Right to Repair should be ratified and enforced by the UN, and the creation of these expensive throwaway products should be illegal.

That twin plug setup has been common on Hondas for a long time and coil failure on the rear bank is very common. Dual plug also frequently found on older Nissan engines, many Mercedes and a lot of Alfa motors. (Probably others that I don't recall right now) One of the biggest traps for techs not familiar with these systems when it comes to intermittent misfire, rough running and minor power loss diagnoses.
@meeder78

And it is an extremely common mistake for shops to forget to replace the rear plugs. The L13A i-DSI engine has been used in the Jazz/Fit as well.
@Damoinion
@Damoinion Жыл бұрын
@@meeder78 Yep. I forgot to mention that because of the wiring layout, it is also common for these engines to suffer from CKP sensor failure due to over load on the rear coils as the wiring for both is in a common harness. When the plugs are too worn, or there has been an ongoing oil leak that damaged the wiring insulation you get current leak into the sensor wiring that causes a misfire or in an extreme case, fries the PCM

8 spark plugs. Wow that brings back memories. I remember having to explain to customers with an early 90's Ford Rangers with a 2.3l that they had 8 plugs and wires. As a Parts Counter guy got some really nasty comments on those. Felt really bad for Mechanics
@williamlewis7846
@williamlewis7846 Жыл бұрын
All the 2.3 rangers had those plugs. Although, contrary to popular opinion, they did not both fire at the same time. The plugs on the exhaust side fired 90 degrees after the plus on the Intake side. They fired on the exhaust stroke for Emissions reasons to fire unburned fuel.
@williamlewis7846
@williamlewis7846 Жыл бұрын
The way I understand the 8 plug thing is, one set is independently controlled from the other set. Along with the variable valve timing the plugs are controlled by the ECM to increase fuel economy and power.

Why is it that I always feel like I accomplished something, just watching Ray work while drinking my morning coffee? 😅 FYI, apparently there are some fake NGK spark plugs around. Usually a "too good to be true" price is a giveaway, but there was a recent YT video showing how to identify them. There are some clues on the packaging as well as the plugs themselves. Measuring their resistance, they were all over the place and way more than spec.

I believe the reason for 2 spark plugs is even burning in the cylinders where you have a single cam blocking the ideal centre location for a spark plug in the middle of the valves Also works as redundancy

This really brought back some really old memories of a time when I regularly cleaned spark plugs on a Waukesha V12. Seagrave pumper. 24 plugs dual ignition, dual everything! Leaded gas and when the engine was running it ran from cold to screaming down the highway and occasionally running for hours on end pumping, so they always needed cleaning. Another great video Ray! Thanks! 😁

@@taliakuznetsova7092 It used to be the standard was 20 years for custom chassis & 15 years for commercial chassis pumpers. It had something to do with Underwriters insurance ratings for a community. @@gregorylewis8471 Yeah I remember something like that. It makes sense for the crash rating given where the most injury and fatalities occur according to studies but smaller builders going out of business is unfortunate.
