Last Ford I had that had those, I just replaced them all with normal ones. The "covers" were, I think, just a cheap way to make the wheel nuts look expensive. Value Engineering - value for Ford, cost for the consumer. They might be OK of you never used an impact wrench but always used a six point socket but who has time for that?

If the bushings are worn but not bad enough to replace and making noise, you can get some good silicone lubrication spray and give the bushings a good soaking. Once the lube's carrier fluid drys off the silicone will stop the noise. That way you can drive without squeaks and creaks and wait until they are actually deteriorated enough to justify replacing.

2008 Mustang; damn thing would clank when hitting speed bumps, the swaybar to frame bushings shrunk slightly and were so hard, it almost sounded like metal to metal. Another example of swaybar noises would be any vehicle, like a Challenger/300/Charger with those links that looked like tie rod ends, where the ball rested in the socket, it too would clank. Oftentimes, I'd grab the bar and see if it moved even a tiny bit on the bushings, etc.

A pressure pack of lanolin (sheep wool oil) squirted onto rubber bushings is a great way to eliminate squeaks without damaging the rubber. Also great to prevent corrosion on electrical terminals including batteries. It's widely used in the marine industry. Plus lasts for a long time.

Yep, all of us Ford owners know about swollen nuts. Luckily the dealer I bought my 2019 F150 from, had replaced the factory wheels with aftermarket wheels and lug nuts. Lucky me, no swollen nuts to deal with. Sad thing is, Ford has been doing this for awhile. My brother had to replace all the lug nuts on his 2013 F150 for the same reason, so this isn’t just a “ bad batch “ issue. Ford knows about this and just keeps doing it anyway. Crazy that they can keep getting away with something like that for so long.

I've been battling this swollen lug nut problem on my wife's 2002 F150 for quite some time. I was going to order some new lug nuts but their all foreign junk. So I took the lug nuts off and I used a pair of wire cutters to cut the outer shell off and now I have all perfect lug nuts again. Once you get the metal covering off the outside a 20 mm socket fits perfectly. If you look at these lug nuts they are very well made just the outside covering is junk. Try this to save yourself some cash and these Ford lug nuts are actually better than any of the ones I saw for sale. I live in Arizona so rust isn't a problem.

Whenever looking for a suspension squeak or rattle that you cannot find on the lift, I recommend you put a jack under the sprung parts of the suspension and raise them to ride height. Sometimes, while the suspension is hanging as you had it, there is tension on parts and they appear tight. By loading the springs, then using a rubber mallet on the various suspension areas you may find out what is loose. We would put the vehicle on the lift, then use a dead-man stand under various locations of the suspension and lower the vehicle until the tension is off the rest of the suspension components. More often than not, we would easily find the issue.

I told them, so you want me to pay you $200 for a set of defective Lug nuts, that didn’t even last 80,000 miles? Told them, no thanks I’ll do it myself. The look on the service reps face was priceless. Then they tried to charge me for the tire rotation. I told them take it off, you can’t do a tire rotation if you can’t take my tires off. @@ColinWatters They're not going to listen. Its unheard of for a shop not to use air tools. They will either use torque sticks or a torque wrench after they lightly tighten them with an air tool, but they will never do it all manually. It doesn't matter because if they used air tools on the lug nuts in the past, that's all it takes. At some point they will have a problem. I work for Ford. I can show you how to get new ones for free. There's 2 ways. These lug nuts are covered under warranty. So, if you have an issue with them, they should replace them without a problem. I do it every day. If you are out of warranty, you can still get them. In the workshop manual, it clearly states that impact tools are not to be used on this type of lug nut. Not taking them off, or putting them on with torque sticks. Nothing. So, unless they take them off and put them on by hand, they went against Ford's requirements. If they give you a hard time, threaten to give them a bad survey. Very few people know this, but those surveys are extremely important. Just 1 bad survey can be a nightmare for a dealer. One of the service writers at a dealership got caught fooling with a survey and the manufacturer fined them $50,000.

I like to check sway bars on a drive on lift. Keeps them in their normal position thus showing any looseness with a simple push/pull or tap with a rubber hammer. Hanging free on a frame lift sometimes changes their contact angle thus taking up the slack/looseness in fit. Ray, if you had 21 lug nut sockets, you could quickly remove all 20 lug nuts, then use the 21st socket to put the new ones on. Then in your spare time you could take the stuck lug nuts/sockets to the press and quickly push them out. Better yet, just borrow everyone else's 19mm sockets for removal of said nuts, then return them with the nuts still stuck in them. USE YOUR SOCKET FOR INSTALL ONLY... YOUR FELLOW TECHS WILL LOVE YOU. Of course this last solution most likely will only work one time, at least in your current shop.

In the early introduction of radials, it was accepted that they could only spin one way. Moving L to R and vice-versa was supposed to weaken the belts. From a 1974 Tire Supplement to Owner's manual: "cross‐switching is not recommended for radial-ply tires. In a four‐tire rotation, the front tires are moved straight back to the rear and the rear tires are moved straight forward to the front. Five-tire rotation should not be used with radial-ply tires." This all changed with steel belts.

I still love this last one, have never had anything but maintenance done to the car plus of course tires, finally had to put shocks after driving on Louisiana's horrible roads for 3 years. I don't drive much but still live in Louisiana so now I need springs and struts. Oh well, I can not buy my car today even used. Everyone I know that has one is keeping it. The worst mistake Ford made was discontinuing the Grand Marquis. Because they always look nice and shiny for a small production cost. It's a result of the constant battle between the engineers and the bean counters. The battle is usually won by the latter part since they are the dark side that stands between good engineering and the almighty stock holders. The stock holders primary interest is the design department. However, for the same reason as the engineers, the design department is also forced to obey the bean counters. And that is why all new cars have the same look today, no one dares to make cars with a personality. I'm a BMW-guy and for me the E38 (1994-2001) was the last beautiful car they made, classic lines and perfect proportions. Today they are buck-toothed and look like they fell from the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Ultimately the stock holders always are the ones to blame, they indirectly via the bean counters set obstacles in the way for the visions of the people who creates the car. Both engineers and designers would for sure have preferred a normal chromed bolt, but they cost a little more. And "a little more" times 250' becomes serious money.

The two piece lug nut is made with a high strength alloy steel core, and a stainless steel cover. The alloy steel is required to get the proper clamp load, and the stainless cover is for appearance purposes only. These lugs are more expensive than all other options, less solid stainless. A solid stainless lug nut is not strong enough. Plated lugs (chrome, zinc, galvanized, etc.) and plain steel lugs corrode, and the customers complain about the appearance. It's not the engineers who don't properly evaluate the options, or the finance team that is not willing to spend more. It is ultimately what the majority of customers want.

The dealership ended up replacing numerous rear suspension parts, to include the struts and mounts. It took many visits until they finally got it fixed. While Ford covered the suspension issues, the lug nuts took a few years to swell up and they were not covered.

Swelling lug nuts are very common with not only Ford but Chrysler too. Reason why because majority of independent shops and dealerships recommend tire rotation with every oil change. Heat builds up causing to swell up cap lug nuts.

It's nice to see someone who knows how to use a torque wrench properly. So often I see young guys at tire shops bouncing the torque wrench. Unfortunately that usually means improperly tourqed lug nuts.

I usually see the guys at you're ships running torque sticks or just straight impacts on it. They're so bad. I have to tell them to use a torque wrench and watch them and I hate being that guy...

not to "tell you what to do" but all you had to say was "ok i swapped the lugnuts on the other side off camera, now were all set to torque them all to spec" You make such great content, thank you!

we have the same problem with some ford ecosport and raptors with the can on the lugnuts being chewed up by improper tightening and loosening mainly caused inexperienced car owner unable to use the tyre wrench included we always encouraged to have those lugnuts replaced with proper milled nuts , one other solution would the complete removal of the can cover on the lugnuts making it from 19mm to 18mm which also makes the included tire wrench unuseble.

You have to fish around and find the closest SAE/MM socket to get it engaged. My toyota scion XB did the same thing after about 8 years ago. Swapping studded tire wheels every year became a challenge. Finally replaced them all last year

I had one lug nut on my 2014 Expedition that rounded. They were all massively over torqued. I had to stand on a 20 inch breaker bar to pop them free. I tried 12 point and under sized sockets that just kept rounding the chrome sheath. Used an extractor set and the socket split in half. Due to the very deeply set in nuts I could not get a splitter on them nor use an air hammer to push it off. Drilled the stud but could not get any angular motion on the nut. Eventually had to drill, and drill and drill through the nut . Pounded with air and hand cold chisels until it eventually split in half. Installing the new stud was easy. Of course I had ordered a full set of lug nuts and replaced them all. Once again the lesson is NEVER use an impact to install lug nuts!

There's nothing wrong with using an impact gun to install wheel nuts. The problem is the operator. Tire shops are renowned the world over for over torquing wheel nuts. Probably because tire fitters are not mechanics (though they should know better).

@@jimmyb1451 You're not supposed to use an impact on them even if you use torque sticks. Impact loosens the tin cap over the lug nut.

@@AT-wl9yq I couldn't give a toss. Those nuts are going to fail, no matter how they are treated. No one, worth their salt, would refit them to any vehicle, unless the customer is too tight to replace them.

@@jimmyb1451 You can do it however you want, but this issue generally doesn't happen if you don't use impact. Its clearly listed in the workshop manual for vehicles that have these lug nuts. Also, if they fail while the vehicle us under warranty, you can just replace them. Just have your service writer add a line to the RO and get new ones from parts.

@@AT-wl9yq Why does it not surprise me that you work in a dealership? This issue generally always happens, impact gun or not the caps always become deformed and loose over time. The only thing that stops them from coming loose is the rust jacking from dissimilar metals. A better idea, would be for OEMs to stop producing them. Especially given that their existence offers literally no single advantage over standard, solid wheel nuts.

Had the same issue with my '08 Jeep Wrangler; a "tough, off-road vehicle" but fitted with these crappy capped soft wheel nuts that round out easily & then fall-off and could leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere if you ever needed to change a tyre out on the trails (the supplied wheel wrench is oversized if the caps are gone and you need to wrench on the nut underneath). Had one where the thin chrome cap came off (several of these caps on the other wheel nuts had gone missing too) and the nut underneath was rounded-out (seems that they are made of really soft steel). Try as we did it wouldn't come loose (probably overtightened & rounded-out by a tyre shop at a previous rotation/change) so had to drill & punch the stud out in the end and replace it. Got back to town & replaced the lot with old-school (but cheap) solid-steel aftermarket nuts and they work great & have never let me down since, despite numerous rotations using impact drivers. Just goes to show that sometimes cheap Chinese aftermarket replacement parts are actually better than OEM parts found on US-assembled vehicles (having said that, quite a few of the OEM parts on my Wrangler including the alloy wheels are stamped "made in China" so it appears that I may have just replaced some inferior Chinese parts with slightly more expensive and better engineered Chinese parts).
