DEALER Gave a $3500 Estimate for BRAKES! Fords Escape Brake Pedal Sinks

This 2009 Ford Escape came in for a second opinion after having the an inspection done at the Ford Dealer. The dealer recommend that the customer replace the brake master cylinder and the ABS control unit. During a test drive, we were unable to duplicate the concern. The main concern was a falling brake pedal while stopped. This suggested that there is a possible leaking master cylinder, the seals internally may be intermittently bypassing. The other possibility is an internal leak at the ABS control unit. Before we left the parking lot, we found that the rear wheels were locking up in low traction environments such as the parking lot gravel. During the lockup, I we observed that the ABS pump did not actuate. The rear drum brakes were inspected for the correct parts and correct installation. We also check the other shops work during the inspection. We had to choose that most likely cause of the lockup and the sinking pedal condition. Due to cost, we chose to replace the brake master cylinder as it was far less costly than a ABS hydraulic control unit.

Why on Earth would you take a 15 year old Ford Escape that's worth practically nothing to a dealership? The ABS unit can be bypassed and just let the brakes operate without it.

I had a similar problem on my Ford Windstar - I would come up to a stop sign or a red light and as the car was coming to a stop the pedal would go to the floor and the car would not stop - Brought back to the Ford dealer and they changed the master cylinder. This intermittent problem continued so they changed the master cylinder again. The intermittent problem continued. So back to the Ford dealer again. Finally it happened when they took it for a test drive and they realized that the bracket for the ABS sensor at the passenger side front wheel was broken. This allowed the ABS sensor to move around and give a false reading to the ABS system. When this would happen the ABS light on the dash would not come on . When they replaced the ABS bracket with a new one I never had the problem again. Something to keep in mind when checking the brakes.

As a retired heavy duty truck mechanic after 43 years I can attest to Ray's Superior diagnostic skills and excellent manual dexterity and patience. I've never seen a pocket screwdriver used for so many different things from resetting tiny o-rings to prying a water pump off a block. I understand his frustration with Monday morning. Quarterbacking that goes on about what Ray does or doesn't do. It has been said: those that can do get it done those that can't don't! They whine and moan about those that can. I worked on trucks most of my life. Everything from bobtails to tractor trailers and yellow (caterpillar) equipment. A common refrain from truck drivers is: I could do the job myself if I wanted to but I don't have the time. That's sort of like me saying because I had to have a commercial's driver's license that I could drive a tractor trailer on highways with inclement weather with proficiency. I was really good at moving them around the yard spotting and shuttling the equipment from customer locations locally. Doesn't make me a professional truck driver any more than Monday morning. Quarterbacking a professional mechanics makes a novice a professional. They would do better to keep their mouths shut and just watch and learn.

That is the reason I will not work mechanic jobs for dealerships... not to disrespect the good mechanics that do work dealerships but the main company is all about money and they will sometimes sacrifice honesty and integrity for income... I prefer to do mechanic/welding work for a shop like yours who doesn't have to answer to some corporate chain and where honesty and integrity make or break customer satisfaction. Keep up the good work Ray and continue to show how a real shop owner/mechanic should interact with customers and their vehicles and spend the time to truly diagnose a problem to the best of your ability instead of unleashing the $$$$ parts cannon like others do.

Back in the 80s bought a brand new car, two weeks old. Stolen and recovered with a damaged steering wheel and steering column. The dealer replaced the damaged parts an gave it back to me with the steering wheel not on straight. I asked the service manager to correct that. He said----"you need a front end alignment, the steering wheel goes on only one way, $79.95""" No way, I drove the car home, took the cover off the center of the steering wheel, removed the nut holding the wheel on, repositioned the wheel on the splined shaft. NEVER TRUST DEALERS--BIG TIME THEIVES.

Meh. The diag tool didn't indicate the need for the pump but the symptoms did. Chance are, for the FREE diagnosis, the dealer didn't use their diag tool. (IIRC, my dealer charges $200 for a full diagnosis.) Given that this owner didn't want the brake cylinders replaced or a fluid flush, there's a fair chance he was at the dealer for his free diagnosis, then walked away.

If you want to diag a M. cyl , push the brake pedal down very slow with no pressure . If you can sneak the pedal down , the M. cyl is gone or about to fail . If the pedal won't sneak down , then the M. cyl most likely good .

I took my wife’s van into a shop I had used a few times because the brakes were soft. They called me and told me it needed all new brakes and it would cost &800 (in 1998). I took it to my preferred shop, who had been too busy to work on it, and told them to just get to it when they could. Two days later I got it back; leaky brake cylinder and $90 for the repair.

I've owned many vehicles for 47 years. Until more recent time with all of the electronics I have driven my vehicles to the carwash and pressure washed them while hot. Nothing ever happened. Now about twice a year I use a household degreaser in a spray bottle and some paper towels and clean it all up. I then hit it with a Armoral type silicone detailer. My car is 13 years old and the engine bay is clean and shinny.

I have always kept my engines clean on all the cars I have owned. I have never used a pressure washer on the engine as they are too powerful and force moisture into the electrics. If the engine is particularly dirty and oily then I first spray it down with kerosine and then hose it off. If you spray with kero first then most of the water just beads off. I don't expect mechanics to work on dirty oily engines. I have never cracked a head or exhaust manifold by cleaning my engines. I have owned a number of cars over the past 55 years or so. I'm now 76.

I've had several master cylinders with a failing non return valve /shim. Holds pressure fine, but just lift off slightly (like just enough to let car start creeping after coming to a stop) and reapply higher pressure and pedal sinks. Customers always say its intermittently going to the floor but dont consciously realise they are easing off and reapplying pressure

The info was useful because he was comparing it to the dealer's parts cannon approach. Both estimates were prepared around the same time, in the same area. If he puts out numbers on a regular basis, it will encourage people to treat those numbers as a useful reference for the price they should expect. And there are a huge pile of reasons that isn't going to be helpful or relevant. Heck, give it a couple of years and his quote for roughly the same work might change quite a bit.

i used to work on my own stuff and even have worked as a mechanic never went to school for it but m old man found i had a knack for fixing stuff so he always encouraged me to and i have had several mechanics that have taught me i am a visual/hands on learner have a hard time learning from book or someone just telling me how i have to get right in and do it and have learned alot this way but admit there is still alot i do not know and will not do because of limited knowledge i don't even like to work on my own pos truck unless it is something simply and i have limited physical ability anymore so can't do much of what i used to do but i enjoy watching ray because in this day and age he is a rare breed he is honest!

Mu granddaughter had a 2009 Mercury Milan. She received a recall notice for a possible failing brake pedal. Ford dealer said her car did not have this problem. 2 months later her brake pedal went to the floor and she rearended the car in front of her. Totaled her Milan.

That car has a dual circuit brake system. It's possible for half the brakes To fail due to a fault not caused by lack of maintenance but it is incredibly unlikely for both circuits to fail simultaneously.

Thank you for this video! Made an appointment to drop off my 2012 Equus with exactly this issue at the beginning of March on the way back north from the Keys. Ended up cancelling the appointment when I discovered that it would have cost a few grand attempting to hang out in the area for 2-3 days with wife and her doggie while you worked on the vehicle. When the brake pedal headed to the floor one sub zero morning on the way south, I immediately suspected the Master Cylinder. After that, driving into warmer weather and with engine heat the issue mostly cleared up with occasional instances of pedal going soft. Never any pulsations so that helps rule out the ABS, but I now know to ask the local mechanic to test it, now knowing it can be tested. Had hoped to have you perform the Full Monty Maintenance on this aging beast but we had to cut our expenses and get home. Your post has made me a much better informed owner to help assure the issue gets fixed correctly. Thanks, again!

I’ve used the plug method before. I, just like you said, didn’t think it would work. Believe it or not it did. However, the hose routed into the reservoir is still my preferred method. I specialized in classic American muscle cars 50-80’s mostly so that’s always been my primary way of bench bleeding. Ignore the haters, they just want to see your reaction and get a rise outa ya. My father who was a WW2 Moter pool mechanic, taught me, when you wash the car, wash the engine. It runs cooler and leaks show up right away. BTW, I have a 2004 Escape with 216,000 miles on it and it runs great! Keep up the good work.

Ray did that right because new designs of master cyls have differences. The neat thing we figured out during a recall, was guys who did the old way would cut a seal inside bottoming it out inside. Intalled in the car is better. Like Ray did. Then the helper puts one foot under and one foot depressing the pedal for each stroke. Then the new part doesnt suffer a mystery failure from bottoming out the pedal. Some applications its the thing that makes the difference. Hope this adds to your joy and pleasure and prevents bewilderment. Sure saved us time and paperwork and loaner cars or rentals for customers. Have a great day. Nice and shiny.

@@rickwoods5384 didn't sound like they did. That was why I said that. People who do the full bleed, and old school methods do a lot more bottoming of the pedal and don't realize it's just a part downstroke required and no pumping that quickly removes the air. It's the plan the bleederman has, and his sequence on many vehicles. We only had .6 hours to do ours. Same job, more crap in the way. Guys caused new part failure, so our guys went to help their guys. (Team system) Small groups. Previous decades but same manufacturing. Same brand car. This resembles the BMW use of calipers. Same wave spring hardware. Anyways, not similar in some ways to the instruction sheet. You can't argue with a lot full of cars fixed by a method, versus three cars dead in the shop because the new master cyl received damage. Always depends, on make, model, year, and system used during that build. Ray did better methods. He could further protect a newer style part with not bottoming it out like our General service and lube guy team.

Yup, just ignore them. I’ve been a mechanic going on 30+ years now, 20 years a jet mechanic in the Air Force and 15 as an automotive mechanic (I did it through my teen years before I joined the military and for the last decade since I retired from the Air Force). I own a shop an hour or so away from ray in Florida. Best advice I ever got was pretty much everyone’s a critic and you’ll never get two people to agree on the best way to do anything, so do it by the book and when all else fails rely on your experience and judgement.

Rain Man, you put me onto BG products. I utilized the EPR which solved two engine problems whice developed over many years of short trips and low speeds. I love that snake oil. Yes, it does nothing for a low mileage engine.

Minor cleaning is easier than major cleaning. EPR is cheaper than the big flush kit. My Toyota has a little over 100,000 miles and I use EPR every three or four oil changes… Not really needed to use it every oil change but I would say every 20,000 miles or so. I’ll use it.

I've always bench bled using two plastic adaptors with barbs and attached hoses to the barbs. Place the ends of the hoses through the filler opening to a level under the fluid. Pumping it blows the air out into the reservoir and refills with fluid on release; Three minutes and it's done but still need to bleed the system because the lines were disconnected and some minor ait could have been introduced into the lines. You solved that by bleeding the ABS pump.

When I used to do this Ray, the new master came with a plastic fitting and apiece of clear rubber hose. You put the hose on the fitting and in the reservoir. When😊 you pumped the plunger, it squirted fluid back into the reservoir. When the bubbles stopped, the master was bled and ready to install.

Disregard the keyboard warriors - you inspire a lot of people, including me! I just finished building an auto shop on my garage, after I got a dealer estimate for $8k for replacing upper and lower control arms on my Panamera. Watching you replace suspension on a bunch of different kinds of vehicles gave me the confidence to just do it all myself. The bonus is that after buying everything for a home garage plus OEM parts, it's still half that price! Profit margins dealerships ask for nowadays are truly disgusting.

I have personally worked for four stealerships in the past, and I know all too well how things work in those zero effort establishments(aka den of thieves). Nobody these days actually takes the time to diagnose vehicle issues, “mechanics” basically just replace everything they can feasibly pass off as a legitimate repair, praying on the ignorance of the average person, especially with the complexity of vehicles today…and don’t get me started on EV‘s. They are basically just disposable, and most of the times can’t actually be “repaired”. They’re gonna be walking with their tail between their legs when 2035 hits, and we still don’t have a usable, charging infrastructure, much less, models that aren’t garbage in five years or less. Before replacing the Master Brake Cylinder always check the slide pins like Ray did. Sticking slide pins often mimic problems similar to Master Brake Cylinder issues.

I have been burned by dealers and avoided being burned. I have found one out of five or six dealers within 50 miles I think is honest. But pricing is still dealer rediculous.

i found testing a brake m/cyl for bypassing was to exhaust all booster assistance and just press the brake pedal very lightly and it will slowly creep to the floor.

In my 50 years with cars I've had this sinking pedal twice and on both occasions it was the seal at the far end of the master cylinder piston that shut's off the reservoir preventing any pressure being created. It was intermittent and a quick re-application of the foot on the pedal gave me normal brakes. A slow application of the brakes was more likely to result in failure than stamping on the pedal. Great video.

Ray, know that all the people who think "My way or you're wrong" (the "REEEEEEEEE" brigade), also exist in other areas of work too. I am a licensed Radio Ham and my hobby is full of these people... "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG" is almost the motto of the year for some of them. We have a huge number of people who first used electronics and radios 4 and 5 decades ago and they KNOW everything they learned in the 1970's is the ONLY way to do it. No matter that materials, designs, techniques, and that most of us have migrated away from vacuum tubes through transistors to ICs in that time. Modern is very different from antique. The mark of a good technician is to learn the new and how to safely ignore the naysayers unless of course, you ARE doing it wrong and then the trick is to learn about the correct way to do it for the future - that's called experience. You will have learnt more from doing that than any of the "REEEEEEEEE" brigade are willing to learn. My message is don't worry about the "REEEEEEEEE" brigade. You are better than them. By the way, I love the remark about reusing brake fluid...... "REEEEEEEEE"

Of course he's doing it wrong, you don't take a vehicle out for a test drive if the customer says the brake pedal goes to the floor, you investigate first and verify. First check should have been looking for leaks at the master cylinder as that is the most likely cause, and a static test with constant "normal" pressure on the brake pedal to see if the peddle sinks, meaning the internal seals are leaking past in the bore. That doesn't mean I dislike Ray's methods or his work ethics, that's why I subscribed.

Hello Ray. In 1994 I bought my first (and subsequently only) new vehicle. I grew up all GM but decided I liked the Ford pickup. After a couple weeks I started experiencing my brake pedal just going to the floor. First time was in line at the bank, almost hit the car ahead of me. After several trips to the selling dealer and them claiming they installed all sorts of new parts on the braking system I took it to another Ford dealer, then another and another. Eventualpy called Ford corporate who after some BS sent me to yet another dealer. In total, between all the dealer visits the entire braking system had been replaced on that truck like 3 times... Pads, rotors, booster, master cylinder, lines, you name it. Never got fixed, and within six months I took a beating by trading that truck in on a Chevy swearing to never buy another Ford vehicle. I've been driving 40 years, owned at least 20 cars/trucks and never had a problem like that since (or before), well except when my 20 year old northern truck blew a hard line. Piss on Ford and their dealers.

I do work on motor scooters and small displacement bikes. I do work on my own truck as well, (alternator, starter, steering pump, etc) but was way sceptical of doing brakes as I wasn't sure of all the components like sensors and such. I always bench bleed but beforehand I make sure to bestow the honorary title of "bench" to the firewall already designed to hold a master for me. Bonus points for registering your brake pedal as a "screwdriver"

Going from memory here but as I recall, the master cylinder was placed in the vice at an angle so air would travel toward the bleed port. You can also accomplish the task without a friend

At the risk of getting blasted, in the last 50 years as a shade tree mechanic, I have replaced maybe a dozen brake master cylinders and NEVER bled one on the bench or in the car. I bled all the brakes, to get the old fluid and air out, until I had a good pedal. Never had a problem.

I changed the upper oil pan gasket on my wife's jeep the other day. Already being as fun as it is the felpro kit came with these plastic studs to "help" install the pan. The threads wouldn't even fit in the bolt holes. I did end up using them though, I ran them through a die of the right size with a drill. And after that they worked perfectly! (They did actually make it easier since I could stick the pan on, and line up all the bolt holes before the sealant touched)

Let me guess, Sarasota Ford, right...??!? Sarasota Ford told me parents that their Escape needed new head gaskets, possibly a new engine...!!! I can't remember the exact problem, but the issue was solved with new valve cover gaskets...!!! When we went to another mechanic, he couldn't believe what he read on the dealership's excessive estimate and found no faults in all of what they quoted as faulty...!!! That Escape ran with no other big issues for anther 60,000 miles and they sold it with 115,000 miles or so...! Watch out for Sarasota Ford...!!! They will rip you off...!!!
