When I replaced the lines on my '98 Suburban, I purchased a replacement kit from Gas Tank Renu, they are nylon but rated to 900PSI, came pre-made with all fittings attached and included a new fuel filter. Fit great even in the original chassis clips. And was a great price too.

I can tell you exactly how a leaking fuel line can cause an intermittent stalling/no restart issue. And even allow a vehicle to restart and run fine, with proper fuel pressure. It boils down to this: If fuel can get out, air can get in, courtesy of the volatility of gasoline and the Venturi effect.. And let me tell you, while air is necessary for combustion, it makes for a lousy fuel. My late wife had a '77 VW Rabbit 4-cy with a Bosch FI system. Coincidentally, this Rabbit was also an Ohio car. Every once in awhile, after driving for a period of time, the fuel pump would start to get loud, then the engine would stall out. It would not restart until it had sat and cooled for a period of time, usually about 30 minutes. And it only did this during the summer on hot days. My wife had had it into the shop a time or two before we got married, but the techs could not recreate the issue, and thus unable to diagnose it. After some years and a move to the sunny, warm South, we began to experience this problem more frequently. And we began to notice puddles of fuel on the ground. One day after work, I saw a lot of fuel on the ground, courtesy of the heretofore unseen rusty fuel line. Once we fixed that, no more puddles of fuel on the ground and no more stalling/no restarts on warm days.

That fuel filter could very well have caused it to stop running. Debris finally builds to the point it stops the fuel flow. Then when it stops running, the debris settles out, allowing it to run again. Great video!

Recently had an issue with my '47 Ford....350 crate engine. Running down the highway in traffic, complete and total shutdown. VERY carefully maneuvered through traffic to the shoulder. Due to being distracted by watching the traffic, I couldn't observe symptoms very carefully. Over the next few weeks, I tinkered on it, while trying to remember my days wrenching on the trucks for a company I used to work for. Long story short, I recalled that the ignition on a GM runs through the starter...further investigation revealed a wire splice that was done VERY poorly, and it was losing connection on the circuit after running a bit due to vibration. FINALLY found the problem, redid the splice properly - problem solved.

hey Ray as an ohio mechanic that does a lot of fuel and brake lines, the way to go on fuel and evap is nylon tubing, just get a filter that has the barbs for nylon, go from the pump to the fuel rail, it will take a lot less time than making steel lines, brake lines the copper/nickel line is easy to bend and flare and will never rust
@frugalprepper Жыл бұрын
I am from Ohio. I see trucks like this all the time. I run new Nylon Fuel line from the Dorman Kit, and Nicop Brake line on them. Also check the crank sensor on it. They are a very common problem on those older trucks. And they will work then die, then start working again. I normally check the wiring to the crank sensor as well, they get all messed up all the time. I also never lift the old truck in Ohio by the shackles, a lot of those shackles are so rusty they are being held on by a prayer.

If you end up doing brake lines you might suggest to the customer to swap out the master cylinder to a newer model. The braking difference is night and day and its a cheap direct swap upgrade.
@VictoriaChaudhuri Жыл бұрын
Not a mechanic so I admit I am talking from ignorance here. That leaking fuel line could not only leak fuel but also suck in air (or water) if there is any variation in fuel pressure. There is now a bubble in the fuel line. As the truck runs it gets hot under there. Especially on a long trip from Ohio. The air expands enough to block the fuel line and truck stalls. Truck now remains idle and cools down. The air bubble collapses and now fuel can now flow. So I support your decision to replace the fuel lines.
@imfloridano5448 Жыл бұрын
Definitely replace that fuel filter and lines ASAP no questions asked and the fuel pump electrical connector and ground are probably corroded as well given intermittent opens in the fuel pump circuit when evre the vehicle has run for a while. Corrosion can creates more resistance in the line causing more heat which can mean kaboom.

Occhams razor suggests the loose battery cable could have killed the engine at highway speed, but it wouldn’t explain why the tow truck driver thought it was a fuel pump. The no start due to fuel pump would have required the starter to turn the engine over. A loose positive battery terminal would not have allowed the starter to turn at all with arcing at least. I would inspect the positive terminal to signs of arcing to at least make you feel better that to had a confirmed kill at to the no start. But that isn’t the same as a no run at highway speed. A clogged fuel filter, especially with rusty fuel lines, can cause the issue. At low flow, pressure at the rail can be high, but drop as volume increases. I flow test, rather than a pressure test is a better measure. There are specs for how many ounces per minute. Rust tends to settle in the bottom of the filter. But as higher flow rates can clog the filter and then settle back to the bottom at low flow. Normally it’s a cheap fix to replace it where suspect or not. But given his rusty those fittings are…..best to replace the lines. And don’t take it for a test ride with gasoline leaks naturally.

I had a friend’s car to diagnose for “died when running on the road”. Many years ago. Turned out to be a partially blocked breather in the tank. Admitted enough air at tick-over, but at high speed the used fuel leaving the tank created a partial vacuum in the tank and stopped the engine due to fuel starvation. Finally diagnosed when, having recreated the problem on the road, we opened the tank filler cap and noted the noise of air entering the tank. Drove home with the filler cap off.

For future reference those ramps should be attached to the truck somehow. If they slip and fall while the quad is up on them it's not a pleasant experience...ask me how I know.

There are a ton of that series (and interchangeable models) mostly rust free at all of the pick a part yards in SW Florida. If I was the owner - I would pull every rusted and missing part off a couple of donor trucks to bring that rust bucket back to life. Frankly the only thing worth keeping is the drivetrain on that thing. Those trucks sell for very little down here - especially with high milage. That engine is good for another 200K if properly maintained (ask me how I know) so an even better idea is to find a low rust model locally and swap our the whole motor and tranny. As a matter of fact the owner probably declined any further work as this is an older video and we haven't seen that truck in any of the videos posted after that last one was recorded. I wis Ray would give us updates at the end of videos like this where the work was never done or whatever the final result was - at the end of the video. This was probably never going to be posted (because repairs declined) but Ray is a machine and gives us a video almost every day! With Ray working a 5 day work week in the shop (which he should) but 7 days in the week - we're going to get one like this every once in a while. Hopefully Ray gives us a post mortem on this one in a future video! It sure would be nice to get a live stream every once in a while so we could ask follow up questions on some of these repairs. Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Ray I had the same issue once and it was the main ground wire from the engine to the frame that had to be replaced along with the alternator.

Back in the day, my girlfriend would just use a steak knife with a wooden handle and would ground the battery to the frame, started everytime! 😂 The silly things ya do when you're 18...
@henryott9562 Жыл бұрын
@@jilbertb yeah the thing is that all Chevy truck have issues with the body grounds and the break lines that run on the frame along with the fuel line. When I replaced all of mine I ran them through a rubber hose . Never had an issue after that.then I bought three cases of under coating and sprayed the entire undercarriage of the truck.

There's an awful lot of little things left broken or hacked together. Seems a shame when proper repairs aren't all that hard. But the demon rust is knocking on the door. Have to see if this one can be saved. Also very interesting to me personally, as I have a 98 Burb, so it's great to get a tour of where some little things are hiding.

With those rusted fuel lines, what seeps out also seeps in from wet road conditions, engine or vehicle spray wash and once you get on dry road/ground, you end up with vapor lock (water in the tank or lines), but it will start back up once vapors dry out. I've run into a few of those before with 1990-95 Chevy. GM and Ford trucks. Once that tank is dropped and the fuel pump remove, don't be surprise to find rust flakes attached to screen, net and the magnet if it has one.

I had a '65 olds that would run fine but on occassion would stall out. If I waited a few moments, I could continue. It would stall out when needing power, like going up hill. What it was was a cracked fuel line that allowed air into the fuel when demand was greatest. Letting it idle allowed the air to pass and then the fuel would come back into play. I was able to cut off the steel line and reinstall the flex and no more problem!
@charlesschneiter Жыл бұрын
Well that fuel filter sure looks horrible 😯 - might well be the main culprit. It's well possible that the fuel filter lets through enough fuel while running in idle, but starts to block at higher RPM when the engine's demand increases. ...

14 minutes in, I'm thinking that it idles fine but maybe it can't get up to highway speed due to lack of fuel at that speed. A trip around the block (over the bridge/overpass) could've been tried. OK, on with the rest of the video. Oh, I forgot, no brakes!! Best not take it out on the highway!

The ground on the fuel line goes to an unsealed ground. Water wicks up into the pump connector and corrodes it.

My money is on the loose battery terminal. Right at the start of the vid while it still had the no crank condition, the fuel gauge was jumping around like crazy when you keyed it on. The level sender and pump would be getting power or ground from the same place. Betting the pump just lost power and died. Unfortunately you have also found a laundry list of other related issues. Keen to see what direction this repair takes.
@rickeyross22 Жыл бұрын
Ray, now that's its running because you found the alternate ignition I truly think the battery cable you fixed killed it and allowed it to not restart, I would try to recreate that by running the truck and backing the nut off a turn or so and wiggle the wires, your other though about the fuel pump was very true, however that's a very strong fuel pump, typically when the jostling of a tow I've only seen about 50% of the pressure compared to what you have and ultimately still needing a pump in a short period of time, hope this helps, and good luck, great job and happy weekend to you

Watching Watch Wes Work on "crusties" where he lives, gives me some perspective on this truck. It is actually pretty clean for a salt country truck. It has some original thinking with regards to repairs. The original thinking repairs could actually be the problem.

if you cant get a replacement fuel line kit, dorman makes a slick kit that uses pretty readily available nylon fuel line and kit comes with a decent press tool and all the quick connects etc. I dont remember the number but i think it was called "professional nylon fuel line repair kit". Its really handy for older clunkers like this-we used to use it a lot up here in the rust belt-you can fab up a new line pretty easily
@chrisstromberg6527 Жыл бұрын
Did a few of those up here in WI, for fuel and steel brake lines.
