Out in the New Forest National Park for the night in my new Haven XL Hammock for the first time. An outstanding supper and some music from my past. It’s great kit. Sometimes the mattress will lose air and surround you like a taco.some people run a strap underneath longways to add tension and support if needed. I have the original and will likely upgrade to the XL or Safari for the extra shoulder room.

That was an outstanding camp, the meal was especially luxurious. If you want more luxury, and you seem to bring along a lot of gear, take a fleece electric blanket that has an all night mode instead of your wool blanket and a Power Station with at least 250 Wh.

Thanks for your really positive feedback. It is so great to hear from so many people who think outside the box. I tried the electric fleece blanket on the Storm Eunice camp and it was really effective and didn't take too much power as it didn't need to run at full power. It ran on number 3 for 7 hours and still had 50% battery left. It will definitely be coming out with me again next winter. All the best. 👍👍

I'm sure you have since learned that you need to string the head of the hammock higher than the foot, to compensate for the weight mass at that end. Then you should be a bit more level. Nice video, very entertaining.

When using the ferro rod just hold the scraper near the tnder and pull the ferro rod up towards you and then you don't disturb the tinder.

Thanks for your support. I think the fireplace you are talking about is the stainless mesh on 4 aluminium legs. If so it was the bargain of the century,.It was off Amazon and was only £13. I have used it probably 15 times now and it is still perfect. In the latest video going up on Tuesday at 5pm, I used a new twig stove, again from Amazon, which you may be interested in. 🤞 All the very best. 👍

First, I thought "look at that tree moss". Second, I thought "oh no, you never do that" when you said you hadn't even unpacked it yet. Third... straps for the hammock and tarp? I don't *think* my Safari came with those. Fourth - Oh, so THAT is why I struggled so much to get the tarp in the bag. It was for the accessories, not the tarp. (But I *did* it.) I've barely started the video!

The tarp is right - for storm mode. For regular weather, you can tie it out. Mine came with reflective cord to do so. They also more recently released a cover for the mattress that I love... it is insulated, so that it is a bit warmer and has IMHO a nicer feel to it.

Great to hear your feeback. Hope you enjoy the rest of the video. I find that the tarp when in storm mode does catch a lot of condensation which is a shame. I used it last time with a different tarp which worked really well as it kept the tarp away from me and left a decent air gap for ventilation. 👍

How did it compare to the Amok? I've got the Amok, but never been out in the rain...yet

The Amok is the Rolls Royce of hammocks, the Haven is a very good second to it. It is comfy in any sleeping position and has the benefit of being able to setup up on the ground but does not enjoy the voluminous space that the Amok does. The haven also does not have a large rain fly like the amok and when closed down it is much closer to you. If you have the Amok I would stick with it personally. Hope this was helpful. I do like the Amok, it's a big step up from the DD hammock which I still have, but the sleeping arrangement has proved the deal breaker for me, being able to lie on my side or front is great. I still use the DD sleeping bag, which has a reinforced foot area that lets you stand up on the ground if I need to. I've never tried your quilt idea, so might give that a try...can you post a link to it please? Thanks once again, and happy camping

Hi, thanks for your reply, yes the quilt is a must have for the Amok in my opinion as it makes using it so much easier. I use the Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt which I bought from www.outdoorline.sk/en/quilts as I am in the UK. I selected the Revelation as you can open the foot box up and use it like a regular quilt and I went for the -17C version so I could use it all year round. Hope this helps. Great video! But what I’d really like to see is you setting up the hammock in the pouring rain while still keeping all your gear dry! Many times while camping I’ve arrived at the site during a downpour and the challenge has been to set up camp while keeping the gear dry. Now that would be a realistic video! One doesn’t always have the luxury of setting up camp in dry conditions.

I completely agree. Rain always poses a problem in keeping kit dry. In this case it started raining at 05:00 the next morning. I will endeavour to pick a time where it is raining when I arrive on site so I can video this aspect. The Haven hammock does have the ability to do a single setup which will help as you can pitch it with the rain fly attached. Thanks for your interest and comment. All the best. 👍

If you're going to have a second tarp, might as well use the same two trees used for the hammock, as anchor points for the larger tarp. That way if it's raining you can get in and out of the hammock fairly dry.

I agree but with the insulated mats, blowing them up with breath leaves moisture in them which can go mouldy. The bag is not much fun 👍

I use the quilt all year round, it is rated at -17C. The important part is getting insulation under you which is equally important when using a sleeping bag. I am looking forward to trying it in the summer as my one can completely open out and be used like the quilt at home. I personally favour it but, as with everything it is down to individual preference. 👍

Thanks for pointing out how the tarp is not particularly waterproof. Very important to know! I am very much sonsidering buying one but I will have to ad a few quirks I asume :)

The replacement tarp is fine, must just have been a glitch and I can recommend the Haven Hammock as one of the most comfortable on the market. I would strongly suggest getting the whoopie slings when you buy the hammock as the tree straps are not very long and limit the locations you can hang it up due to tree thicknesses and distance apart. The rope light is a nice addition as well. Hope you enjoy using it as much as I do. 👍

The tarp likely needs to be seam sealed. There is seam seal tape but I don't use that. You can buy liquid seam seal...comes in a squeeze tube...sort of gel consistency. On a nice dry day, outdoors, you can apply the seal the seams to the tarp seams, let it dry...it will remain flexible and you' be good. If, by chance, you need to pack it before it is dry, throw talcum powder on the seam seal after it is applied...it will keep the seam seal from sticking to itself. Cheers!
