When I was a kid I read a saying, "The cobbler's kids have no shoes." Now, this could have meant the cobbler was so busy repairing shoes for other people he didn't have time for his own children or he was so poorly paid he could not afford shoes for his kids. In a tiny way, when I see the missing wood on the trailer I am thinking, I am sure they have access to a piece of wood. It is not like they have to make a special trip- to the hardware store to buy a piece of wood. You all do great work. As a parent, I admire your parents' drive and commitment to the business.

I worked on a dairy farm for years and little time to make repairs. We ran it till it broke, then fixed it. Sometimes there’s not enough time in the day to do preventative maintenance. I think in their case it still works and they make more money sawing lumber than they do fixing everything we see sitting in our lazy boy 😂

Food for thought... FREE treadmills are always on craigslist. Grab as many as needed to make a conveyor for the sawdust created by the mill. Use the belts & rollers & tie them all together using one control board and dump into a trailer or container. Cheap easy way to deal with that problem...

Hi Em always nice to see you! It’s refreshing to see the family work together. Gramps is about, mom , dad, and the kiddos all working to make the family business run. Your mom and dad are very blessed to have you all! I have a couple questions if you have time. What blades do you run and how much time do you get on them? Do you Re sharpen them there or do you have a service? I’ve been cutting beetle killed pine and getting on about 1/2 hour on my blades. I pressure wash the bark off, get the logs clean and run lube. Maybe time to change the brand of blades!??? Thanks for sharing your time at the lumber yard. God bless you and your whole family!

I’d adjust that ramp or put a steel wedge on it so that a log piece once lifted rolled right into the splitter instead of having to push it.

I'm surprised seeing your mom using spray chalk/paint rather than lumber crayons for the log scale tally. In the 1960's I used crayons because I didn't know about the spray chalk....or if it was available. Her way is just as good as mine was or better, just a different era. 🙂
