Raise and rise have similar meanings. Learn how we use these verbs differently.
Raise is transitive and rise is intransitive. That means raise has a direct object. We always raise something. Rise has no direct object. You can’t rise something.
Watch and learn how to use the verbs correctly, and also learn about a British and American difference - how we say 'pay rise' in British English and 'pay raise' in American English.
This is a new version of an older video and it contains a fuller grammar explanation and new scenes. Teachers - the old version is still available if you're looking for a shorter video. • Video

you guys make learning English interesting. could you please explain the difference between arise and rise.
@SimpleEnglishVideos
@SimpleEnglishVideos 8 жыл бұрын
Oh great question! Rise means 'go up' but arise means 'happen' or 'occur'. Arise is an irregular intransitive verb - arise, arose, arisen, and it is rather formal. You're more like to see it in written English than hear it in spoken English. For example: (spoken) Some problems have come up. (written) Some problems have arisen. Hope this helps.

Ok! But Why in English when it talks about Ressurrection of JESUS, it Says "He is Risen" and not "He Resurrected"? In Portuguese language we say: "He Resurrected" : " Ele ressuscitou". Thank you for explanation, I loved Transitive and Intransitive verbs Class.

Hi Marco - so glad you liked the piece on transitive and intransitive verbs and great question. I'm afraid I don't know! My best guess that this is because the language of the bible is pretty archaic. Maybe another viewer will be able to stop by and help us.

I frankly don't understand the real intention behind this question. It must be a brazilian problem to try to clearly understand if Jesus "rise" "raise" or "resurrected", sort of nitpicking the inconsistent, I'd dare say. Anyway, just googling a minimum you find that "jesus rise from the dead" or "jesus being raised from death (by god), or that "jesus rose from the dead", or the "resurrection of jesus from the dead". I guess "to resurrect" is not something that happen every day, and the verb was invented just to describe the event of jesus coming back from the dead, or from death, or brought back from the dead by his father . Jesus volveu do reino dos mortos. Deus fez que jesus volte do reino dos mortos. Again...what's the problem? "raise" and "rise" in Portuguese and Spanish is "levantar", e um morto ressuscitado a primeira coisa que faz es...guess what? levantar-se (to raise ). So uma escamoteação pra falar de jesus?

@@altrefrontiere2354 Dear Friend, I Believe Jesus is Risen,Paul in his letter wrote:"If Jesus is not Risen, our Faith is vain", right? My question is only understand the English way to express It. Do not worry,I am sure that Jesus is Alive, And He is My Savior And Lord,God bless you,Peace.
