@Alice Paul True. I can see what you mean. However, when he talks about nothing good ever coming out of the collectivization of personal property, farmland, etc, I think we can all agree. His critique of Marxism and Stalinism-Leninism is super important even today, since many millennials never experience these regimes first hand. But regarding today's social issues plaguing America, I'd say there are better experts around.

"These standards are derived from the barometer of our own awareness. If you are unhappy with your life, you can either have a fatalistic - or pessimistic - attitude about that - or you can think 'This feeling is information. Information that something in me needs to change.'" "I do not objectify people and I try to treat everybody with respect and decorum and be sensitive; not only to treat them as I would like to be treated, but try to be observant how THEY want to be treated. It's a standard of not causing any suffering or discontent to the people around me." 💛💛💛

I struggle with alcoholism everyday. Woke up with the “shakes” this morning. Drank whiskey to make it go away and kept drinking since. Still heartbroken from my breakup with my ex and I feel like I spend too much time trying to fill that void, talking to other girls. You saying that you need to spend more time helping others and not being so self obsessed spoke volumes to me.

I have 13.5 years clean time. I know what its like to wake up and need to feed the addiction. I know what it feels like to talk to other men (I'm a girl) to try to fill the void. Addiction is your body adapting. It adapted to the drugs/alcohol and was good at it and your body can adapt to not using and be good at it. It's all in our mind, standards and decisions. I'm sending lots of love and positivity to you. I know you can do it. It just takes making the choice. I've been there. You can have what you want. I believe in you. Lots of love, ~Cynthia

This came just at the right time for me. I’m a mental health therapist and have been struggling with whether or not to keep seeing clients. The work can be very draining, and emotionally hard to bear at times. As a counselor, you are exposed to a lot of darkness in the human psyche. But it’s a good reminder how valuable being of service to others is, and how easily some of us (including myself!) can fall into self-protection/ self-centeredness. Self care is so important, and so is balancing the care of others in our life. It truly is fulfilling being of service to others. Thanks, Russell!

Thank you, Russell. We have to accept that we must live to higher standards than what we see around us, and not be discouraged by that difference. To quote Marshall Vian Summers: "You will value things that others do not value, see things that others do not see and know things that others do not know or will not know. What seems obvious to you will not be obvious to them. You will see both their gifts and their disabilities. They may see neither. You will have higher standards for yourself, but these standards will not be shared by other people. You will value a deeper experience of honesty, but you will not be able to communicate this freely with others. Again and again you will find out the limits that other people set before you and around you."

As someone struggling with addiction, these were really good words. I'm going through a massive relapse at the moment, but coming to the end now, and ready to get back running and living healthily. It's the second time in a month, after 8 months of sobriety. I know I can't do this ever again. I'm 35 next week and as you say, I absolutely mustn't inflict any of this on my family. Personal standards are very important. massive respect for getting the years of sobriety under your belt. It's tough, but it seems possible.

since a baby, ive had multiple traumatic experiences and abuse done to me ,its hard to get out of this victim mentality, im disabled and ill, the dwp have stopped my pip,i can't walk anymore than a few steps, yards, can't drive anymore than a few miles, approx 20/30 without getting abnormally fatigued, stuggling to survive, thank God ,ive got a best friend who is returning favours and helping me,driving me where i need to go,buying me food etc, only friend ive got, got no family, ive been diagnosed with ptsd,im gradually trying to get dwelling place less cluttered and more organised, what takes me a month would take a fit balanced person a day to do...! Love these videos, love your ethos and ethics😊

taking baby steps (mentally) to feel better emotionally will be helpful. If you keep saying "it's hard to get out of this victim mentality" then it WILL be. You must find the positive in the difficult things. Turning the negative into a positive will change your life. Emotionally and possibly with your health. I know it CAN be difficult but it IS possible. I did it. I had health issues and mental health issues for years. But by flipping the switch, raising my standards on what I would accept from myself, helped me change my life. I have been able to heal myself. Our bodies are miracles and can heal anything. I'm sending so much love and positive vibes to you. I know you can feel better today. Just by changing your mindset and deciding you're not a victim, you can control your own thoughts. love, Cynthia

I'm old and crippled, I can't make any money anymore, I never married or had children, so I have a cat and I live with an old man who never made enough to live on either, he's 80, neurotic and a malignant narcissist who blames all of the women in his past for all of his failings. He chose philosophy as his field of study in college so he basically didn't see that short of becoming a professor and possibly an author, that philosophy was a poor choice of study. He has tourette's so public speaking wasn't an option. That's why it was necessary for me to move in with him because we both don't have enough money to live separately. It's a sad existence for the both of us, but money is no guarantee that you will be happy either, so I don't see any hope right now. I can't help him and I can't help myself. We both feel like two failures. Standards? I don't think that is up to me to keep beating myself up with having not made something of myself. I don't know how to fix my life problems because it is a little too late to become a power player. I don't know why I am clinging on to my painful miserable life. Is it just to be able to say I held on to it? At the very least I can say there were some brief moments of utterly blissful moments of feeling centered. We are just a bunch of chemicals and perceived experiences anyway. Nobody gets out alive!!!!!

Your story is incredible and you sound like a very strong person. Maybe your higher standard could just be to strive for those blissful moments. For as much as you’ve mentioned feeling hopeless in your situation, it’s reassuring that there have been times where you don’t feel so bogged down. I’m in what many would consider to be much better situation and I still feel hopeless pretty often. More than I’d like to admit. So for both of our sakes, I hope we can strive to appreciate the good parts of our lives. For what it’s worth, I think you’re already doing a far better job than me!

3 most important principals and standards I am now making mandatory in my life before I allow anyone into my inner world 1. Must be true and authentic to not only others but to self no matter the crowd or circumstances 2. Loyalty not only to myself but to their own self. No matter the crowd or circumstances. Even if it costs them money or temporary fame/ notoriety or popularity. 3. Self validates/ loves themselves as is...flattery and false people with false promises or offers will not affect their decisions or plans with myself and most importantly themselves. They listen and trust their own selves and choose based on what's best for themselves and what's right and what feels right within themselves. I wish I had known these pricapals before but my last heartbreak has taught me valuable lessons and I believe that now having learned those principals and integrating them to myself that my life will now finally truly transform and that holding these up to all future people I'm allowing into my new life will lead to true healing and a life that feels right to me and I will not be derailed again.

This is true. Men often critisize women for supposedly having too "high standards" in relationships, often just because a woman may want a basic level of respect and shared domestic chores/child care. So many men here in Australia where I live want to marry a literal maid/cook/nanny/prostitute so they never have to do any unpaid work and get regular sex. Its really much easier being single

It seems like quite the understated gem at the end there, that it works better to apply your standards (and goals, even) to each day, one day at a time. I love that. Thank you, Russell. ❤️

Russell I've just subscribed to your channel. For years I had heard your name throughout the internet community but I had never listened in or watched any of your videos to discover more about who you are as a wonderful being. I love the knowledge and information that you share and have great respect for you. Love and light to you brother. Namaste!

Thank YOU mate! I've been sending this video to my fellow 12 step comrade's. I preface the texts to my ladies with this: My gratitude still exists today. Happy to have Wi-Fi. Today My Gratitude can't be said better than the words expressed in this link. I prefer this video this morning in reiterating what I'm attempting to do as well tattooing in my mind daily. Some days are better than others with ol' Lizzy progress. Ha

I'm checking into a year long Rehab tomorrow morning. When you said that being an addict/alcoholic make you reach a terminus of going back and starting fresh, or continuing to destruction, you could not have been more correct. An inner death.

I really enjoy and learn so much from your videos. As a Christian, I really appreciate this video on both self-care and serving others. I have never really meditated but I am looking forward to trying it soon. Also, I think that listening to the inner voice or “Holy Spirit” within us is so important too. You are such an intelligent and articulate man. One thing I also seem to learn from you every video is a new vocabulary word! Your British English is fantastic!! You are such an intelligent and thoughtful person! Thank you for your insights and help! 🙏

Thank you for this, I have let my standards slip recently. Russell, please make more of these videos about positive parenting please 💛 my 4 and 8 year old kids' egos are starting to get so big and it can get overwhelming. As a person who works to keep my ego at bay in my spiritual practice, this can be so wild to recognize that their egos are growing stronger and stronger every day (and rightly so, I suppose until they are big and independent and possibly find their own spiritual path). Thanks for all you do. Ria

So articulate, it's a pleasure to listen to you. I don't know if you still smoke as you referred to it in the video, not good for your health, but when I was in hospital recovering from addiction I was told, don't try to do everything at once, it's too much, which is selfcare I guess. I was able to when I felt the strength and confidence that recovery gave me.

Could you maybe do an episode on pornography I was impressed to hear you don't watch it or partake in objectifying other human beings, I'm intertesed in the debate that people use, that alot of women are empowered by It, I personally disagree with this I find pornography extremely damaging to all people. If you have done a video on this before I apologise I haven't seen any.

I too am not a fan of porn. Yet, it seems everyone has accepted it as the norm. I was called a "Prude". I felt as if I was wrong, judgemental, snooty, etc. Yet, I still refuse to conform to their ideals. I just can't.

What a tremendous service you provide. You use your power to point people toward something that you cannot make any money off of. You are teaching people to create a spiritual pattern. Patterns which are healthful and empowering to the Self and soul. Patterns allow the mind to create a crystal ball in the mind, to see everything that falls within that pattern, as it comes and goes, like the stars and the moon. We see the pattern, and expose ourselves as frauds, and thus we must dive deeper to find the source where we are not built upon lies.

Very wise Russell. I think balance, as you try to model in your own life, is the key. Your practices, and how far you've come in your own life, speaks volumes and is truly admirable. I will always follow your advice because I totally resonate with everything you say and believe. I've always had poor boundaries and finally, at 53, I'm getting that it is OK to protect my vital life force energy. I don't have to give it all away even though I care very much about people and animals and being of service. Anyway, another awesome podcast. Always appreciate your honesty and realness 😃👍💛🌈😘

Yes I do agree about standards..individual and collective. It’s about being the best we can be to ourselves and others. I like to think that we are all knitted together in a garment of consciousness, a slipped stitch can unravel the whole thing...so we are indeed very important ..to the whole, more so than ourselves. However, every now and then I like to tear up the script, without slipping a stitch!

im in a bit of a tizzle about my future as a human on this planet & what career i'm supposed to be in & how job descriptions are so vast & varied. The world of work is quite bewildering for me. I dont smoke or drink alcohol intentionally no matter how stressed i may get in a job. I trained in hospitality & catering but most jobs these days are in loud shouty stressful kitchens. I do use this skill to volunteer however
