We got a raise garden bed kit thinking it would be easier (and it was surprisingly cheaper) than building them ourselves, but soon after we began, we quit. This is why and what we’re going to do about it.

we get roughly 15 eggs a day, all winter long our egg production was good, still around 15 eggs a day, 20 hens, 2 bantams just started laying this past week. We free range, no clipping of wings and feed a scatter of sweet mix horse grain.

If you only clip one wing they can't get used to flying because they are lop sided. Leave one long and one short.

If you want more permanent/ no maintenance raised beds, why not use concrete blocks? They are cheap and won't rot and you can always move them if you need to. Also, if you want the beds higher you can stack them. If you turn the holes upwards on top you can plant marigolds or other pest reducing flowers in the holes by adding soil in them.

My plan is also to set up the permanent structures this year so that next year all I have to do is add a bit of compost and plant away! I can't wait to see the end results! Rebekah, it is so good to see you feeling healthy and looking awesome; working with energy to spare! I can't remember the last video years ago you looked this good and frisky! 💕💞

That's funny when Beauty laid out on the walkway. Then she said her dad was a S.FL concrete man, where things won't blow away in a hurricane - that's my dad! He's a retired mason in Hawaii and he built a shed for a neighbor and that thing had hurricane clips to the roof and cemented into the ground - it was stronger the neighbor's house! I tried raised bed kits in the past but now I just buy 1x6x8 and it should last me several years - 3 boards made one 4x8 raised bed at less than $4 a board in Tenn, weather treated. I like the idea of using wood branches for a border, just need thicker and straighter from trees I'm trimming down. Keep up the great job. I love your new greenhouse too!

Gosh! the building and productivity.. and permanent 'roots' going down everywhere... berries, trees, expanded pastures, greenhouse, veggie beds, gravel, etc..... none of it seems temporary, or 'will-do-for-now' .... this is it : ) Love to see always-thinking Beauty 'digging in.'..... (and I think the pets are a subtle frosting on the cake :) Thanks! ox

Are you considering breeding for a certain color for your hens. Solid white is easier for hawks and foxes to spot. I like the hen that escapes, she wants to lay her eggs in a secret location. Good survival instinct to have a good remote broody location. She may have more broody instincts than the other hens.

I used wooden raised beds for 15 years. My current macrocarpa boards are rotting and buying new beds is too expensive for me. For my new garden bed extension, I'm trying the Ruth Stout method. I'm in NZ, its fall and we're in a drought, so my hay hasn't broken down much yet. Should be good by springtime.

Does anyone know where to buy that movable fencing Justin uses to pen in his chickens? Thanks. Oh and Justin & Co - go to Home Depot and get the Oldcastle 7.5 x 5.5 inch Tan Brown Planter Wall Block (see here: www.homedepot.com/p/Oldcastle-7-5-in-x-7-5-in-x-5-5-in-Tan-Brown-Planter-Wall-Block-16202336/206501693?MERCH=REC-_-NavPLPHorizontal1_rr-_-NA-_-206501693-_-N and just buy the wood in the length that you want. If you want a deeper bed - just double the bricks up. Hope the link works and of course, you have to double the wood, but hey. I'm working on putting a big raised bed using that system right now. Just have to figure out how to get the wood home, lol. I have a Ford Fiesta so it will be challenging.

How does the clipping work?
@BH-nu6nd
@BH-nu6nd 5 жыл бұрын
You just cut off the longest set of feathers with scissors (if you cut the smaller feathers underneath the wing the chicken can bleed and you'll have to pull the bleeding quill out with pliers, so don't do that). It's painless. Then the birdie can't get enough lift to fly until its feathers grow back in a few months. If you do it when they first start flapping their wings (3-5 weeks after hatching?) and again before they start laying, only a few will ever develop strong enough muscles to fly more than 2 feet off the ground. I think Mr. Rhodes is only clipping their wings now because their fence is a wee short, but I'm not sure.
