Raised Bushcraft Shelter Bed with Hand Tools: Full Build from Start to Finish

I finish building the bushcraft camp with hand tools only. I merged the other shelter building videos into this one build episode from start to finish with no talking. The raised shack bushcraft shelter is now ready for me to spend a solo overnight or two in it. I started out building the raised platform using some Y shaped sticks. I used small logs for cross members to create the raised bed. I then dug two holes to support the front frame of the natural shelter. I lashed these frames to some posts using natural tree root cordage made from pine roots which I split with my bushcraft knife. I then collected some larger logs to build the roof of the camp. I scavenged for bark around the forest and used this as shingles. But it did not cover the whole shelter. So I went to collect some evergreen boughs to make the bushcraft camp more waterproof and to add insulation. This whole bushcraft shelter was built using hand tools only and is built from entirely natural materials from the woods. This is the UK we not like the US hunting every animal in sight. Deer roam around free are not generally hunted. We are more in awe of seeing a deer just gently walking past us on the country lanes. Same with foxes. No I’m not some towny..I have my own land . We have lots wildlife strolling by us..wouldn’t dream of shooting or trapping any of it. Why spoil a perfectly lovely video by watching animals get destroyed.

back in the 60's when I was like 11 yrs old I used to go out in the woods (PNW) by myself all the time...sometimes a friend would go with me and we'd build a fir limb igloo/fort. Seeing the fir limbs on your vid brought back a lot of memories. We also built a floor up in trees about 6' off the ground using logs and one day we brought about 2 girls and 3 guys with us to show our tree house and we all got up there. Someone asked me if it was strong enough to hold all of us and I said yes and started bouncing up and down (we were all sitting) and after about 3-4 bounces the whole floor came crashing down. It was funny as hell as most of us ended up in the same indian sitting positions. The old wire we used to hold the main corners broke lol. Never forget that. Nobody got hurt luckily. I used to climb the tall fir trees and using my arms I would climb out a limb way up there and then fall to the next limb grabbing it and then the next one down waiting for it to bow to the next one and grab the next one..all the way down to the ground...was fun back then. I felt like Tarzan lol.I wish I could do it now lol...

I might be wrong, but I thought that pulling a full ring of bark off a living tree will kill it, since that's how food and water are transported up the tree? I was taught that you should peel bark vertically, leaving a bit so that the tree has bark running all up it vertically still. Am I incorrect in this thinking? Anyway, love your vids as always, great shelter ideas! I'm returning to the UK next week after an 11 year absence and really want to get back into the bushcraft I learned as a child. :)

well he took down the bushcamp that helped start this all, so i believe all this wood is from that.. the viking house is at Dustins. and badgers rest is in another forest where the pallet wood cabin was.. now its in the pine forest like this one... from what i can tell.. its just the 2 shelters in the pine forest.. this and the pallet wood cabin now.. but with all that wood he is reusing from the bushcamp.. im sure hes going to end up with a little village.. hahaha.. from what ive seen tho.. mike tares down his other shelters (ones he makes complete for a video/over nighter)

I suggest using the hammer side of your axe to knock off branches from poles you’re processing. You can knock most clean off and it saves edge. I tend to hammer wood a lot though, at least for fire. The kinetic energy doesn’t get absorbed like when an edge sinks in..it smashes through and just breaks the log. I spend less energy I’ve noticed.

When you are cutting the notchrs out of the logs for the roof.... if you make the cuts the width of your axe blade apart you can then easily knock out the piece at 90° to the cuts....
