Good morning Danny, this is Danny from deep North Canada. I have been doing raised garden beds for the last two years on a shoestring budget. I build the soil up a foot and a half high 3 feet wide then I cut a Valley down the centre then I put a membrane up and down the valley, cut your holes for your plants and put field stones all the way up the valley they will hold sun energy. It allows you to plant earlier and plant later last year. I was getting 1 kg tomatoes out of the system one and a half foot round cabbages, bushels and bushels of peppers. The rocks really produce at least 25% more yield if it’s a rainy season, the water pours through your up in the air and drains out if you need to water it you just pour the water in the W and it goes right to the plants. God bless everyone you’re doing a great job Danny.

TIP FOR DEER PRESSURE: I have the 32" Vego beds and absolutely love them. My beds had plastic on both sides of the panels. I also deal with a lot of deer. I put rebar on both sides of my beds and used 1/2" PVC pipe to make hoops and put shade cloth over the hoops and used clips from the dollar store to clip the shade cloth on and batta bing batta boom deer proof for the past 2 years. I also used your education on how to grow carrots for the first time and couldn't believe the difference from the grocery store. I will never go back. I have learned so much from you so thanks for schooling me on how to grow better vegetables!

Danny I'm a big fan and a cub owner, 48. I've found a raised bed solution that's almost indestructible and I get them for free. I get wore out or damaged rubber tracks off smaller track hoes, bobcats, and other equipment. I get them for free from a local equipment rental place. They are glad to have you haul them off. I've found a few other uses for them. I've cut them apart and laid a slab of them on the ground in a gate my cows walk back and forth through on a daily basis. This stops them from walking a mud hole in the gate.

That's a valid item for DSH and PG to promote. Yes, peel ALL the protective film BEFORE you start screwing it together. All your assembly advice was spot on. It IS easier if you have a partner, but one person can do it alone (if you don't mind some mild under-breath cussing). I got two of these a couple of months ago. Not cheap, but I won't have the trouble and expense of replacing the wood sides in a few years. They are the envy of the other gardeners in my neighborhood community garden. I'm confident they will last 20+ years, and that's all I need at my age. Hope you are both well.

I use wood, dirt and branches to fill the bottom of my beds and then top it off with Mel’s mixture of equal volume of each coarse vermiculite, peat moss, and compost (cow manure, chicken manure, soil builder etc). I top off my beds in February and they are ready to plant Good Friday. ❤❤❤❤
@Link38009010 ай бұрын
I always believed for raised beds the taller the better. For root systems, root crops and it allows room to put branches and shredded paper, etc to compost on the bottom as it decomposes. It allows for better aeration. I have enclosed raised beds about 4' tall. I allow chickens to fertilize during the winter months and also compost the dirt during this time. I include my extra scoby's from my fermented drinks. I wind up with pretty healthy soil by planting time. Think you ought to throw some 'tea' barrels out there Danny following the tea recipe you can find in the Jadam books. I know that there's a large animal pressure there which actually is a good sign. Animals can't thrive in a bad environment and their presence is actually necessary in some cases for a healthy balanced ecosystem. God put them there for a reason and He doesn't make mistakes. God bless and Happy growing. Will be happily watching your and Ms. Wanda's mad gardening skills at work.

I top them off in fall with the compost I had going for a year. I have plenty of yard waste, veggie scraps and quail poop which is working better than the stuff I had trucked in to start them off. Now I got free fill-ups ready every year and more productive.

After hitting the second yearling deer in two weeks I asked a Kentucky natives what I should do. These deer ran into my wheel well on one occasion and the second time literally ran right in front of my car and got run over by my wheels. The area where I live is farmland and heavily forested. I was not speeding each time and the 2nd time it happened was during broad daylight. There was no deer/wild animal pressure other places I have lived. I was told to get a deer siren/whistle to put on my car. I found an American manufacturer SAVE-A-DEER and ordered myself one to mount on my car. I can hardly wait to install it! I would love it if free hunting permits were handed out to hunters with families who otherwise could not afford one. We have way too many deer on the roads here.
@Link38009010 ай бұрын
You will see that in low pressure areas (little hunting)no natural predators. Check your local laws ordinances. Used to be land owners could take so many by simply handwriting out tags and getting the deer checked in. It could have changed but worth checking into with game warden or local fish & game. In certain areas it's just a fact of life unfortunately. Deer population gets high and you will see that. I will never forget one day my sweet mom walking into my house and declaring "well, they finally got me!" With an angry frustrated look on her face. Puzzled I asked her what she was talking about. She said "the deer.. the dang deer hit me..ran smack dab into my truck and dented it" ..a little dumbfounded and amused I said "Mom, don't you mean you hit the deer?" She said "No, I literally mean that deer ran into me.. right smack dab into the side of my truck".. realizing she was serious I went to look at the damage she was upset about. Sure enough right in the bottom passenger side door there was a small dent in the panel. Based on it's location I realized she was telling the truth..dang deer ran into her! True story 😂.

We had such a problem with voles in one of our gardens that we fenced it and ran hogs in there. They got rid of the vermin, along with tilling and fertilizing the soil. But, when you put in your raised beds lay down hardware hardware cloth, before putting the raised over. More expensive but keeps them out. Chicken wire will not work. They can squeeze right thru it.
@taylorshomestead393410 ай бұрын
Agree! Hardware cloth on bottoms! I’ve got voles too , only thing that worked in garden was putting sticks of juicy fruit gum in holes. In my yard though nothing because the holes are not as defined as the soft garden soil.

💯 Agree! I’m starting my 3rd year with 3 Vego beds and have 2 new ones to assemble. I did my research before purchasing these and fully endorse the product. I’ve got these in my front yard and they look great - tailored and stylish (just in case looks are important to you 🤣). The 17” is high enough to keep the rabbits out….so far. Note that it takes a LOT of soil to fill these. Easy to put together and deceptively light in weight. I’m delighted to see that you and Wanda will be using these. Frankly, using wood to create a garden bed in the south….well, that’s a very short term solution as the wood breaks down so quickly. These will outlast me! ❤

Love the Vego raised beds, I was excited to hear your opinion on it. I don't have a tractor and in my older age, the Vego seemed like something I could do. Def only hand tighten bolts all the way around until all bolts are in. We've had our 2 for 2 years and love them, they are sturdy and the coating on them is incredible. I've dropped concrete blocks on the outside (accidentally) and it didn't even scrape or chip the coating. We got the 17" ones too, seemed like the best buy for our $, got the 9-in-1 and I think a 6-in-1 that we ended up buying extra panels for later to enlarge the growing space. Before our Vegos, we had several wooden beds, but in the south the sun is tough on wood. They were made well, but only made it a few years in full sun. I've not seen sun nor rain nor heat affect our Vegos. The quality is worth the asking price even though it seems kind of steep to start with. They do occasionally run sales if you're lucky or patient enough to get a little off, it's easier to make the leap. Highly recommend them for those who want raised beds.

I'm definitely interested to watch your continuing projects with these. With a couple of exceptions, I've never had very good luck with raised bed or container gardening, due to not being able to keep the soil moist. Even with drip irrigation, the soil in the raised beds/containers quickly turns dry and crumbly in our Arkansas summer heat, while the in-ground garden stays moist and well-irrigated. Wow great timing Danny. I woke up at 2:30 this morning thinking about what type of roma tomatoes I'm gonna grow this season and Where to plant them. Then saw your video. Last season I started having an anthracnose or possibly blight type situation last summer so not planting tomatoes in the garden for the next several years. I did get a full harvest last summer but not without some losses. I was thinking of buying large 25 gallon pots but I'd need at least 25 to 35 of those and they're expensive anyway. So the Vego raised bed option would last way longer than any plastic pot.. I never allow myself any type of failure when comes to tomatoes for sauce. Sauce is a huge deal at my house. So I'm already thinking and planning for this next seasons Roma mater variety and where theyre going to grow. Lol

I have these beds and I'm in Ga. And the fire ants crawled up mine and they are 3ft high.

Jan from Not a Real Farm has raised beds & I asked her questions about them. Our entire garden has them installed since last year. I really like mine!

Here in Maryland, we had a great steel mill, Bethlehem Steel, unfortunately the Union forcing prices of labor up and including pensions, paying people for not producing, it went out of business. So now we're stuck with foreign steel.

I love my raised beds. I live on 1/3 acre in town. We plant everything in raised beds. Ours are made of wood. Fortunately for us my husband is able to cut our own lumber with his chainsaw. So few weeds. Easy to manage

I have 4 galvanized raised beds from Vego. They were very easy to put together. My second year using them. So far they hold up really good. I have the wooden raised beds but really like them better.

We’ve been using Vegos in our high tunnel for the past few years with excellent results! They are extremely well built

Danny, I got them for several years and use branches and flat wooden stamps on bottom so you do not need so much compost and while the wood is rotting it will keep soil moisture and nutritional benefits

I have seen SO many channels getting REALLY GOOD deals on these as advertising for them - too bad I’m not any of you.

Don't be jealous. Save up your pennies...order one at a time. I do without a lot of things in order to reach my goals. You can do it too. But, God can't/won't abide with jealousy.

You’re missing the point. I am not jealous. I’d have to say you are being judgmental.

Thanks Danny! Great presentation and very helpful. I have a few beds currently, I use 1/4 inch screen wire as the base (instead of the garden cloth) and it keeps critters out pretty darn good! 😊😊😊 planning to try a Vego soon!

I put in 4 raised beds last year. I did not get much in produce. But others complained that had regular gardens. The weather just was not on our side last year. Plan to get two more this year. Someone said it could be the garden soil I had delivered to file them. I believe it was called sweet soil. I hope we all can do well this next growing season.

Good morning and thank you for the detailed informational video. I absolutely loved the extra idea of the improvised ideas to keep deer and other critters out. Great thinking! God bless and continue healing towards great health again to you both!

If you decide to use these empty as deer protection (genius!), I'd be concerned about tornado and hurricane winds blowing them away. But, I fret too much. 😅. Congratulations on the collaboration.
