Dude. When I asked my Trek shop to move the spacers on my Marlin 8s headset so the bars sat higher. They looked at me like I was crazy. I told them, I felt like if I could just sit taller in the saddle it would take the pain out if my neck, let me see the trail better, and give me more control of the bike. They shrugged me off but did what I asked. And man, it made a huge difference with just that small space. I can't help but wonder how much better the RR Stem would feel and maneuver. Thanks for letting us meet the maker and learn a little more bout the stem.

Ive been wanting to try this concept by jerry rigging higher riser bars and zero mm stem for a while now. Think I might get this and try it out. Anyone that understands MTB geometry understands what this man is onto. Like most things with mtbs, we have to clear our minds as to how bikes are built and have been built, and start with a clean slate of how they should be built for optimum performance of what we do mtbing. Everything that makes modern mtbs as good as they currently are was once thought of as weird too. My one big question is climbing. Now off to try to buy it.

I actually greatly prefer climbing with the RR stem relative to a traditional stem, and many of my customers like the climbing more too. With a traditional low and forward offset stem, when you are climbing something steep and trying to leverage yourself forward when pedaling hard, you can’t really pull back on the bars to keep yourself forward without the front end starting to wander and flop around uncontrollably. This is because with the forward offset of traditional stems, the bars pull closer to you when they turn. To compensate for this, riders tend to ride elbows up and pulling more up on the bars. This can lead to the front wheel lifting during hard pedal strokes. Finding that balance between pulling the front up to stop it from wandering, and pulling the bars back to stop it from lifting is a constant challenge that typically is dealt with by lowering your bars so low that you are basically falling forward onto them with straighter arms to support your body. With the Reversed offset of the RR stem, the bars pull closer to you when they stabilize straight, so the front end doesn’t wander and flop around uncontrollably. Because of this, you can ride with low relaxed and bent elbows and shoulders while pulling back and slightly down so that the front isn’t lifting. On more mellow climbs, you have a much more comfortable upright position with an open chest for easy breathing, and minimal weight supported on your hands.

Ok I totally get this. Couple thoughts…. 1)this reduces the reach by quite a bit. Tough to tell by how much, but prob 50-75mm? 2)Increasing stack brings bars closer + decrease stem length brings bars closer…. Compound effect. Minus-30-50mm stem alone….. that would turn my XL reach into a medium. Don’t you feel jammed up?? Bike too small….. Like moving your driver seat way closer to the steering wheel. I’m curious how a 0mm stem + 25-50mm of steerer tube spacers would equate/feel. Even just go 0mm stem - where the bars are clamped right in line with the steerer tube. Then add 10deg backsweep. And 35mm rise bars. I absolutely dig this idea. Someone else here noted the way his neck feels ….. I’m 6-1 and my XL Hightower “fits” me but you’re still leaning forward on the bars so you get that neck pinch going down trail. I have always slammed my stems down for more aggressive posture. But now that I’m a 51 year old fart, I’ve been thinking about raising stem just to ease the neck pinch. Keeps developing this. Excellent brainwork there sir. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🚵🏻‍♂️

I'll let Bronson answer your questions, but I will say that 1) it's mostly about adjusting position to work with the bar position and 2) I'm 50, and my farts are never old...always fresh.
@bemorebikes
@bemorebikes Жыл бұрын
1) This is true, the RR (Raised Reversed) stem does bring your hands notably closer. 2) No. The RR stems Raised height pairs perfectly with the closer hand position from the Reversed offset so that you don’t need to upsize your bike. Typically to have a good angle of your arms to the bars and enough bend at the elbows for moving around in good form, you’re hinged forward at the hips such that your back is fairly horizontal. With the more upright position of the RR stem, you don’t need to account for as much horizontal torso length in the cockpit. Also, the total distance between your feet and hands increases for a roomier feel. I’m 5’8” and I’ve tested the RR stem on bikes with reaches from 405mm to 500mm, and I am always faster and in more control with an RR stem. I find about 460mm is a good sweet spot for me. The RR stem was developed over almost 3 years testing anything from below traditional height to about 80mm taller than the RR stem you now see, and anything from 70mm forward to -50mm Reversed always benchmarking against the traditional 50mm - 35mm stem. The RR stem that you see here is the culmination of all that testing to find the best Enduro mtb stem geometry. A 0mm stem with + 25-50mm of steerer tube spacers would be notably lower, and would similarly have your hands behind the steering axis due to the backsweep of the bars, but less than the RR stems -15mm offset. It would perform better than a traditional 50mm - 35mm stem in many ways, but not as well as the RR stem. The RR stems Raised position puts the rider in a very comfortable upright position. This makes keeping your head up to look far ahead easier, and reduces how much your neck back and hips need to bend.

Very BMX riding style. That's cool! I like the experimentation. MTB riders of today are too beholden to the bike manufacturers ideals. Have some courage make your bike your own. Innovate. Don't wait for the manufacturers to do something radical. Their bikes all look the same. There was a time when the bike shops shook their heads at my 2.2" tires running low pressures and my riser bars. I had em years before bike society allowed them to not be ridiculed, and started promoting them.

If anyone has ridden a BMX they will know there is a sweet spot front to back with the bars and this is usually in line with the forks. Too front it’s twitchy too back it’s slack. Using this principle it’s like he turned a MTB into a BMX riding position. As MTB’s evolved from cross and road bikes I can see the legacy.

The biggest issue I see with riders trying this stem is that it will make the bike feel at least one size too small. Most notably for climbing. Might be worth trying for anyone who thinks their bike is currently a size too big. Had a bike art stem in 2000ish that sat directly above the handlebars on my Kona stinky deluxe. Was good.

I've seen that device for couple of days now and everyone seems to luv it. I wanna congratulate the creator, because he kinda fixes the dive problem of the current gen bikes by reducing the RAD. Reducing the RAD increases the maneuverabilty. I've used this principle in my 21st century bike - Балкански Лев(Balkan Lion). I'll get it done by Eurobike. How does pedaling and transfering the power to the rear and front wheel sound to you? Well, you can expect this and more from the King of the Mountains.

Judging by your side by side comparison your bike appears to have around 20mm more travel than stem guys bike so there’s that. as for the rest of it, floppy front ends aren’t really an issue anymore and if you hit the right thing at the right angle an OTB is going to happen no matter what stem you’re running.
@bemorebikes
@bemorebikes Жыл бұрын
Floppy steering with slacker bikes is still an issue, as is evident by canyons K.I.S. steering stabilizer system coming out recently. I would argue that the RR stem is a better way to reduce wheel flop than their spring loaded system that tries to keep it stable from going side to side. Just because you can ride around the drawbacks of a traditional system, doesn’t mean they aren’t there. It can be hard though to realize how much you are compensating for unstable steering geometries until you no longer have too. When I get back on a bike setup traditional after riding the RR stem, the steering feels super floppy and the bike feels much harder to maneuver. While it is true that in some situations going OTB is inevitable no matter the bike geo, stem geo, or rider ability, I would still argue that it is advantages to seek to reduce the likely hood of it happening in the ones that can be avoided with better geometry. The RR stem is not just about reducing floppy steering dynamics and reducing your chances of going over the bars. The Raised height helps improve the riders stance with a better arm angle to the bars for confidence, proper bend in the elbows for control, and more rider weight supported by their legs instead of arms. It also gives a longer and better angled lever between their hands and feet to give them more leverage for maneuvering the bike. These help the rider to feel more comfortable and confident, and makes the bike more maneuverable. The Reversed offset improves and calms the steering dynamics. Since it arcs out instead of in when turning relative to the frame, it allows the rider to position themselves on the outside of the bike when cornering to load their side knobs properly while also leaning the bike in further for a kinematically tighter turn. The hand to front axle position parallels a 58 degree headtube angle for ultimate confidence in steep terrain, with a steering feel that is less floppy and more direct than the stock headtube angle of the bike with a traditional stem. These help the rider corner much better with improved feel of the front end, keep better balance in loose terrain, and feel more confident in steep terrain.

1:33 The RR (Raised Reversed) stem is not the same as a very tall bar such as a bmx bar. The RR stem is both Raised and Reversed. Due to this your hands will be notably behind the steering axis of your frame instead of in front as they traditionally are. A really tall bar or even a long steerer tube with a bunch of spacers or a stem riser would just be higher up without the Reversed offset, and as such will perform a lot differently. A really tall bar is also not ideal because it will move your hands quite significantly relative to the steering axis when adjusting bar role, and is more reliant on having a very strong hold at the bar clamp on the stem to keep the bar from slipping forward and back.

1:49 3:31 The RR stems Raised height gives an often longer and better angled lever between your hands and feet for imparting larger forces into the bike. This makes the bike much easier to maneuver in the air, and allows you to drive through the lip of a jump much harder to create more pop. The more upright and closer hand position allows you to comfortably ride with minimal to no weight on your hands while still having enough bend at your elbows to have plenty of range of motion. When landing large jumps to flat, you can fully extend your body upright to have your entire range of motion ready to absorb the landing largely through your legs, which are much stronger than your arms. 2:30 0:11 That same longer and better angled lever that makes the bike easier to pop off lips also makes the bike much easier to maneuver in technical terrain. Lifting the front wheel and bunny hopping is made easier, and quick direction changes take much less effort. The RR stem gives a really nice locked in feeling where the bike just follows you to wherever you are trying to take it and allows you to flow down the trail with ease. The Reversed offset's ability to calm the floppiness of the steering makes the bike much easier to balance and keep the bike in a straight line when riding at lower speeds. 4:33 The RR stems Reversed offset gives the rider a hand to front axle position that parallels an around 58° head tube angle. This greatly reduces your endo angle so that you are less likely to go over the bars, and allows you to charge harder knowing and feeling how your front wheel will roll over large obstacles with greater ease. The RR stems Raised position puts your arms at a better angle to the bars so that if you get sent forward, you are in a position to brace yourself against the bars instead of getting flung over the bars. The combination of both the Raised height and the Reversed offset greatly reduces your ability to go over the bars, and allows you to get into a more rearward position so that you can brake harder and feel calm and controlled when charging down steep terrain. The reduced hand lead of the RR stem also makes it so that there is a less pronounced, but still existent, self-centering force at the bars when using the brakes compared to a traditional forward stem. This means that changing direction when braking hard becomes much easier and you won’t feel like you’re stuck going straight. All of these also help with ease of riding on unfamiliar trails. It was my first time riding the trails in the video, but I could still feel confident charging because I knew I could effectively react to unexpected trail features. 🙂

The RR (Raised Reversed) stem is not just a stem. Most of the time a more expensive stem does not offer a more advanced ride characteristic, it offers a higher quality of craftsmanship and material. This has both the quality of craftsmanship and material being CNC machined in Covina CA out of aerospace grade 7075 T6 aluminum by me, alongside a ride revolutionizing performance out on the trail. I am consistently faster, and in more control with an RR stem. The RR stems Raised height gives me a longer and better angled lever between my hands and my feet to leverage and maneuver the bike with greater ease. This helps when jumping, navigating technical terrain, and generally playing about on the trail. The RR stems Reversed offset helps to calm the floppy feeling you get with slack bikes while also running parallel to the hand to front axle position of a bike with a 58 degree headtube angle. It also allows the rider to stay towards the outside of the bike when cornering to load their side knobs properly while also leaning the bike over more for a kinematically tighter turn. This helps with cornering confidence and speed.

@@xx-----------xx873 The RR (Raised Reversed) stem is not the same as just getting really high rise bars. The RR stem is both Raised and Reversed. Due to this your hands will be notably behind the steering axis of your frame instead of in front as they traditionally are.

Bike head tubes may need to become longer for sure. Think about what a downhill fork does to the steering position of a downhill bike; I think trail bikes will eventually do just that, but that it may be accomplished with exactly what was described in the video: a taller head tube rather than a taller stem. This stem is just a proof of concept. In the future, I suspect we'll see this sort of thing become more tightly integrated into the bike's geometry. When that day comes, it will be amazing to consider that current bikes will in retrospect be considered sketchy.

The RR (Raised Reversed) stem is better climbing than a traditional stem. When pedaling hard in the saddle on a steep climb, you often leverage your body forward by pulling the bars back towards you. With a traditional stem that arcs towards you when you turn the bars, that force between your seat and bars tries to pull and turn the bars. This leads to a wandering front end that can feel torquey and floppy. You can compensate for this some by either pulling up more than back, or moving the bars lower so that you are effectively falling forward onto them. This can lead to other issues such as your lower back starting to hurt from hunching over, your arms straightening out and giving you less range of motion to maneuver and balance, and reducing weight on the rear wheel that needs traction. With the RR stems Raised height, you are in a more comfortable upright position with relaxed arms at a good bend, and an open chest for easy breathing. The Reversed offset makes the stem arc away from you so that your bars pull straight. This reduces the wandering and floppy steering of a traditional stem so that you can direct the bike around where you want to go and balance easier. With a traditional low and forward stem, you are pulling up more than back with extended arms because you can’t pull back without the front increasing its wandering. This can actually make the front more prone to lifting until you get so low that you are basically falling forward onto your arms. Doing so would have your arms about locked and your hands weighted. This makes the front more resistant to easily rolling over obstacles and can make your rear wheel more prone to slipping due to the decreased weight on it. With the RR stem you climb with higher hands and lowered relaxed bent elbows. This position means that you pull the bars back towards you and even a bit down more than up on steep climbs. This keeps you from sliding back on your seat without lifting the front wheel when you are pedaling hard, while also keeping the front wheel from wandering, and letting it roll over trail obstacles with ease.

@@bemorebikes Could you just run a regular stem in reverse position to simulate the affect or would that be greater offset than your stem? I didnt see what the offset is anywhere looking into it. Obviously the height would be lower so the more relaxed arm position wont be as much of a benefit As for the affect it makes sense why it is more stable/less floppy as its similar to a wrench once you pass the perpendicular point pulling towards you. The more you pull the leverage decreases where on the other side of perpendicular pull path it increases leverage. That would make sense that as centering you have more leverage as it moves and as it leaves center it looses leverage thus its almost an additional self centering. Really surprised this hasnt been tried sooner as I sorted all this just thinking about it, but obviously havent tried it to see what it feels like lol

This idea of longer head tubes might allow guys who just want to ride all day the ability to do so. Take Amsterdam for example, they ride more bikes than anywhere else in the world and they ride uprights. With that being said there will still be a place for aggressive body positions as well.

The RR stem does help quite a bit with reducing hand fatigue. I find that it helps both by having me support all of my weight through my feet which puts very little load on my hands when riding, and also by giving me so much more confidence, I don’t brake as much so I don’t need to brace against my hands as much through rough braking bumps. I would argue that the RR stem allows a more effective aggressive riding and body positioning than with a traditional stem. Many mtb coaches recommend supporting all of your body weight through your feet and being balanced over the bottom bracket with minimal weight in your hands and good bend in your arms when riding in the attack position. The attack position originated in MX as a strong stable stance that lets the bike move underneath you with good bike body separation, good mobility, and gives good control and confidence. The RR stem through its independent testing process, trying various heights and offsets over nearly 3 years, has ended up putting the riders hands at a stack and reach that happens to be practically the same as what you would find on a MX bike. That same attack position can now be used properly on an mtb. If you are balanced over the bottom bracket, then your arms can be properly bent and loose to allow good mobility and the bike can kind of teeter up and down around the bottom bracket underneath you. Also, I feel more comfortable getting forward towards the bars with the RR stem when needed because I have a good arm angle to the bars so that I am supporting into the bars instead of falling over them. This really helps with confidence in steep terrain because I can keep balanced over my feet with a good bend in my arms for control, and I am better braced for hard braking when needed.

@@growlith6969 The RR (Raised Reversed) stems position is very similar to a dirt bike both in stack and reach feet to hands and having your hands behind the steering axis. It’s interesting to me how similar they are considering the RR stem was not inspired by or designed to emulate the position of a dirt bike. I don’t even ride dirt bikes.

Bars have been low for too long. It’s time for a Ride Revolution! The RR (Raised Reversed) stem is not the same as a very tall bar. The RR stem is both Raised and Reversed. Due to this your hands will be notably behind the steering axis of your frame instead of in front as they traditionally are. The Reversed offset improves and calms the steering dynamics. It allows the rider to position themselves on the outside of the bike when cornering to load their side knobs properly while also leaning the bike over more for a kinematically tighter turn. The hand to front axle position parallels a 58 degree headtube angle for ultimate confidence in steep terrain, with a steering feel that is less floppy and more direct than the stock headtube angle of the bike with a traditional stem. These help the rider corner much better and feel more confident in steep terrain.

You will probably still be about an inch or more lower on the grip height, but a big part of the benefits of the RR (Raised Reversed) stem comes from the Reversed offset. The Reversed offset improves and calms the steering dynamics, and makes the bike corner much better. This is why the name is Raised Reversed. This is the Raised version of the Reversed stem concept. It also allows the rider to keep on the outside of the bike when leaning in for a corner so that they can keep their weight on the side knobs properly while also leaning the bike over even more for a kinematically tighter turn. With a traditional forward extending stem, as you lean the bike over and turn the bars, the bars are dropping down towards the inside of the turn as you turn more. With the RR stem, the frame is more of what is dropping down as you turn more so that it leans over further. Along with that, the hands being further back horizontally from the front wheel more similar to a roughly 58 degree heatube angle really helps with confidence in steep and rough terrain.

A bar with that much back sweep would put most people in a disadvantageous position for their arms and wrists to the bars. That also wouldn’t account for the height.
