I have a guide dog puppy and I love her so much. I don't want to give her up, but I know I have to and that it's the right thing- her new owner will love her more than I don- for giving her a gift that nothing else can; sight.

@DJHey20 I know what you mean. I'm raising my first puppy and I'm already dreading having to give him up, but I heard from other people that it's a bittersweet thing cause you know they're going off to really help someone... That being said, they'll always feel like your babies.

I'm raising my second puppy for Leader Dog for the Blind in MI. It's a great feeling when you meet the people that the puppy you raised is going to spend the rest of there life with.

@motosportjunkie, Guide Dogs uses Labrador and Golden Retrievers for this work because this breed of dogs is particularly adaptable and will work for pretty much anyone who provides the correct motivation. This is one reason our organization stopped using German Shepherds because they typically don't make that transition well. I hope that helps!

@@lordravencarver242 In the us service dogs are not certified please research the ada and i would try getting ahold of a servcie dog trainer to atleast give guidance you really dont want to accidently train something wrong especially with a guide dog since this guide dog will be guiding

@laurasammyfox Traveling with a puppy-in-training takes a lot of coordination, but many of our raisers have done it. You first need permission from the airline. They aren't required to allow your puppy on the plane, but many do allow you to do it. The most difficult thing to do is to time your puppy's feeding and relieving schedule so they're as comfortable as possible for the trip.

Guide Dogs for the Blind is in San Rafael, which is twenty miles north of San Fransisco. They do have another Guide Dogs for the Blind campus in Boring, Organ. However, there are other guide dogs schools in the United States. Like the Seeing Eye, which is in New Jersey. It all depends on what your training style is like, and which guide dog school will best suit your needs. I hope that helps. Good luck with everything. :)

@davros1488 They're trained to only go on command only on cement on the right side of your body so a blind person could easily find it to pick it up.

I know that dogs in training do not have the same rights as service dogs, So my question is this: Can you fly on a plane with your puppy in training? I go to school in Florida but am from philadelphia so I travel back and forth a few times a year. If I can fly on the plane with my dog in training, what airlines are the best choices? Do they give you a hard time? Is it difficult to fly with your dog in training?

Although I love dogs, this is a job I wouldn't dream of doing. Because of the fact it's hard to say good-bye to the dog, after spending a year with them. It'd be like giving up my own baby.

Zohaib Khan As raisers we are given a manual with specific instructions on raising. Everything from when to get what shots, how to teach the commands and behaviors expected of guides, and housebreaking. There is really no leeway for introducing a new technique.
