Yeah, but they were the three coolest people at the party! How many people do you think saw the movie in the theatres when it came out? I did, and I doubt there was more than 10-15 people in the whole joint. Even less when I went to see "Blood Simple". In the 80s, there were only about two or three cool people per town! Definitely not some "golden period" where everyone was grooving to great work. Well, what do you expect "with that sonofabitch Reagan in the White House....." 🤣 The beginning of the head-up-the-ass, sell-out-the-future era.

Neat little point: when the brothers show up and HI wakes up, HI mutters 'Merry Christmas.' At the end of the movie, he's dreaming of a family dinner, at Christmas. Which means he's been having that dream throughout the movie. I never noticed until now.

Tex Cobb was a heavyweight boxer who once fought for the world heavyweight title (Thanksgiving 1983). It was a miserable fight. The champion, Larry Holmes, smacked him around for 15 rounds (then the length of a world title fight; it was reduced to 12 rounds because too many fighters were getting killed after the 12th round). Cobb apparently couldn't be knocked out. He told an interviewer, "The ability to take a punch is a gift, darlin'." He's quite intelligent and extremely funny in a dry way. He once fought Earnie Shavers, acknowledged to be the hardest puncher ever. Tex won, but he said, "When he lays leather to you, the effect is just astonishin'." A prominent sportscaster of the time, Howard Cosell, called the fight. He spoke of how disgusted he was even during the fight. The next day, he announced he would never call a fight again, and he never did. He had become well-known by calling Muhammad Ali's bouts. Tex later became a kickboxer, which you can see when he beats up H.I. Okay, then.

Before he went into Pro Boxing, Tex was World Heavyweight Kickbox Champion. Before the Holmes fight Johnny Carson had him on the show, and said he must be very dedicated and hardworking to be a prizefighter at that level. Randy replied, "I'm the laziest person I know. I'll fight anybody in the world to keep from getting a regular job!" and Johnny about fell out laughing so hard. Tex had the gristle removed from his nose when he was a kickboxer so it wouldn't break - and that was a big reason he could take a punch so well.

Raising Arizona is basically a live action Loony Tune. The extreme situations & characters, all the shooting & explosions yet no one is really hurt until the bad guy is destroyed, the chase scene & the humorous one liners in reaction to the absurdity. H.I. is Bugs Bunny, Lenny Smalls is the Tasmanian Devil, Ed is Granny & the baby is Tweety.

To me, it was one of the best comedies of the 80s. The Biker, Gale & his brother, & Glen's family were all out of control cartoon characters. I think that Nathan Jr. captivated the convicts because they also yearned for a family-life whether they knew or not. Of course, Ed was just heartbroken about being barren and could think of nothing else except getting a baby to raise. I'm glad he wasn't taken by Glen & Dottie based on the behavior of their brats! The whole Unpainted Arizona story element was just humorous to me by nature (I had bought furniture like that in the past here in Texas). It's a top tier Coen Brothers movie to me.

I grew up in Tempe and got to see them filming parts of the chase scene; the exterior Safeway was just down the street and the railroad track jump was in front of where my mom worked. I think I was thirteen? When it hit cable I watched it daily on that same ugly couch, as everyone's aunt or grandma who smoked too much had the entire set. That having been said, I am an Arizona native and "Well okay then!" IS a part of my vocabulary as a result, life now imitating art. And no, we don't sound a thing like that, Emily.

I saw this when I was 13 in 87. I’ve been using so many quotes from this movie ever since. “There’s what’s right and there’s what right…and never the twain shall meet.” Every time someone says it’s a crazy world I involuntarily respond with, “someone oughta sell tickets…I’d buy one.” “If a frog has wings it wouldn’t bump his ass a-hoppin’.” When is use p.m. referring to the time…i always say “in the p.m.” “…either way we’re set for life.” The theme music includes a version of Beethoven’s 9th on the banjo. That represents this movie perfectly.

Raising Arizona is a great 80s comedy. It has the right amount of quirky and odd. The little details that are in the background (like the sound fx, but also the side characters and even the props) give it more depth than the usual stories. For me it's an 8.5. As a suggestion for another fun movie to watch: I suggest "Nothing to lose" with Martin Lawrence and Tim Robbins. Somehow it gives me similar vibes to "Raising Arizona". Keep up the fun and the great videos 🤗👍🏼

I have a feeling the woodpecker tattoo shared by Hi and Leonard Smalls shows that they are actually brothers. There are other ideas suggesting the tattoo is related to a prison gang, but I don't see why the Coen brothers would go down a dark path with this character.

Yep, my grandma had that couch when I was growing up! As far as the accent, I don’t think it represents how people from Arizona speak. At least those people I know from there. And I’m from roughly nearby (Colorado). And I have also noticed movies and tv shows set in Colorado often also have characters speak with Southern accents (though maybe not as exaggerated as this movie). I figured it was one of those things where Hollywood seems to have this idea that everyone not from California or the Northeast speaks with Southern accents. Especially if they live in rural areas.

Back when this movie came out and I was in high school, I actually worked in the movie theater when this was showing. I remember this woman storming out of the theater in tears. She demanded to talk to the manager, and when she did, she wanted to know how she could be showing such a horribly violent movie in her cinema!

This is my favorite Coen Bros. film, so funny. Love the dialogue. I also recommend "The Hudsucker Proxy". Randall Tex Cobb was a boxer before he was an actor. He once went 15 rounds in a championship match with Larry Holmes and 2 of the 3 judges scored Cobb losing all 15 of them without being knocked down. He later explained his strategy on The Tonight Show, the video is on You Tube, it's hilarious.

This, Airplane!, and National Lampoon's Vacation are my top 3 comedies of all time. No matter how many times I watch these, they're ALWAYS funny, everytime, all the time, just as much as the first time I saw them. That's a rare thing in comedies. Ya know, the more you see/hear a joke, the less funny it gets. But Raising Arizona and those others never get old, the comedy always hits the mark.

The thing I love about Coen Bros. movies is that everybody recognizes them but nobody can replicate them. Nobody can make a Coen Bros. movie but them. The Huggies chase is quite possibly the greatest single comedic setpiece filmed since the days of Buster Keaton. Now since then, there may have been others, but between 1929 and 1987, no contest. What I find funny is Leonard Smalls is the comedy equivalent to Anton Chigurh, both characters the Coens rendered in 2 completely different films and genres...yet Chigurh was not their creation. I wonder if they thought during NCFOM "Hey Joel...this is familiar don't you think?"

I was born and raised in Washington, DC. In the 80s, when I was in high school, I worked for Circle Theaters, a local movie house chain, which was owned and run by Jim and Ted Pedas. They decided they wanted to go into the movie business and this was the first movie they produced. Their production company was called Circle Films.

One fan theory I heard long ago was that Smalls was actually a version of Nathan Jr. grown up. Which explains the baby shoes and the same tattoo as HI had which we saw for the briefest of moments before he was blown up by the grenade. This is also supported by the beginning of the film he dreams of Smalls and at the end he dreams of Nathan Jr's future. Smalls was basically who he would have become if he remained with HI and Ed as his parents. Again, just a fan theory, but I rather like that.

There's a legend that Sam Raimi and the Coen Brothers were having a "Dolly-off" with this movie and Evil Dead 2. Evil Dead included such tricks as a camera chasing Bruce Campbell through a forest and through a tree prop that split in half to imitate the power of the Deadites. Therefore, Hi's dream, which included the camera "jumping" over a tricycle, up a ladder and into the woman's mouth can be considered the Coen's reply.

Every time I watch this, I play the scene where the brothers are escaping from their tunnel in reverse so it looks like, especially with the screaming, that the ground is sucking them in. I don't know why, but it makes me giggle nonstop.

I gave Matt a pass for his Big Lebowski take but 6 for Raising Arizona is infuriating😡. Saw this as a kid when it first came out and it definitely changed the way I look at movies…so I have a specially affinity for it. I place this at 2 (behind Fargo) on my Cohen’s best of list.

I was wondering something about the movie, and I believe I understand now. There was a small budget, and so it explains and if you notice at the end when hi talks about a couple and their children visiting an elderly couple. The elderly couple is hi and ed. But the parents of the kids visiting them are glen and dot.

When I lived in Tucson I think I really only met one person who had a strong accent that sounded anything like the characters in this movie, and he was from Wilcox, which is a little town of about 3000 people in southern Arizona. The vast majority of people I met in Tucson came from California, the Midwest, or the East Coast, and if they didn't then their parents did. Either that or they had a Hispanic accent. Back in the '90s Randall "Tex" Cobb (Leonard Smalls) and I used to shop at the same grocery store in Nashville. The movie the Coen brothers made after this one was Miller's Crossing. Actually, they sort of made Miller's Crossing and Barton Fink at around the same time. I highly recommend both movies and hope that you get around to watching them soon.

as a kid i watched this movie occasionally. specifically for the Prison Break scene, the Huggies Theft scene and the Bounty Hunter scene. the Bounty Hunter was Randall "Tex" Cobb, he's been in a ton of movies.

I love this movie so much! Holly Hunter and Nick Cage as well as the rest of the cast were so funny. I still say “turn to the right!” randomly sometimes. There are so many fun phrases and words to say from this film.
