I have a guess about why the turkeys don't use their shelter in the rain. Wild turkeys will head to open fields and flock together during windy and rainy conditions. The reason is that turkeys have excellent eyesight, but do not have great hearing. When there is increased noise during high wind and rain, the turkeys are at a defensive disadvantage. If they get out to open fields, they are able to see predators from afar and use the herd mentality to extend their visibility.

Sharing on FB. Please let him know that putting a t-post here and there inside there area helps keep the hawks away. Apparently it's harder for them to swoop down, grab, and get out with a post in the way. They see the posts, or tall tree stumps, and they think twice.

I am doing the same thing you are on our land we purchased last year. One of the ways we keep our feed/food costs down we are doing fodder, for all our animals. We are sprouting organic oats, so our eggs & meat are organic, wheat, corn, soy, GMO free. We supplement calcium in the water for the chickens and fresh herbs to eat. You will save a LOT of money on feed and less expensive than tradition feed with the benefits of organic. Good luck to you.

Turkeys are definitely sensitive little wimps when they're young. I got 4 red bourbons, 3 royal palms, and one by one they all dropped like flies, starting with the biggest oldest (3 months old) going down the line until finally the youngest, smallest one died too. Pulling my hair out trying to figure out why. Never had a problem with chickens and ducks. Towards the end, I started bring the last 2 turkeys inside every night and realized they had a respiratory issue of some kind, snotty noses and congested. Must have either been an illness, or a worm. That was an expensive lesson. Doing a ton more research now and will try again with just 2 or 3 turkeys, doing things differently.

Will Turkeys grow/fatten on apples/pears? I have an orchard and would like to use some off my fruit.
@DiegoFooter6 жыл бұрын
It depends on how many you have, how much fruit you have and how long you want to wait for them to size up. Regardless you are probably going to have to supplement with some grain.

Am I the only one wondering why it wasn't mentioned....are you clipping the turkeys wings? Why don't they fly over the electric fence?
@bryanavey6 жыл бұрын
that breed of turkey is the industrial breed, they get real heavy, so they don't fly...easy to manage. Heritage breeds are the ones you have to be careful with...they'll fly off.

Poultry net is specifically engineered to discourage domestic fowl from jumping the fence. Cannot rem the turkey specifics but chickens cannot see the edges because of the color varigation. Guineas hop netting for fun it seems unless you can train them to be part of a mixed species flock.

@Martian Anthropologist Amen, Brother. The idea of attempting a "natural" food / egg / milk farm by using clean food to give to a dirty breed of animal has always caused me to stare in wonder. I have nothing against mutts, and natural mutts usually make the best pets. However, farm animals that have been bred to be better producers / weight-gainers / milkers / etc / etc, then they are technically what? You can say it. Genetically Modified Organisms. (That's GMO if you didn't pick up on it.) If the (cross-)breed is so far from an original that it cannot walk or live a full life, or has to be artificially inseminated just to get more of them -- then I promise you they have lost other things along the way. Giving them GMO-free food, does not "put back" the genes someone bred out of them.

Well, the turkeys we had up in Galicia used to go loose with no fence, and they had no shed either, and if a dog came around, they would fly up to the highest tree and bully the dog away, but when it started snowing we had to leave, so we left them in the woods there, and when we came back a few months later, the neighbours said they had survived and even had chicks, but in the end the neighbours had butchered them. They shouldn't have trusted those hungry neighbours, or their offspring would still be living up in Galicia to this day.
@SH-kc9kx Жыл бұрын
No, that's selective breeding. Cruddy selective breeding for sure. But not to be confused with GMO.
