Love this! My son has autism, and a special super power called hyperlexia (basically his brain was wired to decode written language from a very early age). It gave him a way to communicate with us before he began speaking on his own around 4 and has opened his world to so many things. I did allow Diary of a wimpy kid (it gave us some great conversations about how we as a family behave, and treat each other with love and respect…some families don’t etc) and also gave him a huge push to start writing. I had worried he would never enjoy writing, but that book series gave him the idea, and he’s written many diaries with true and fictional stories of his daily life. He loves poetry, non fiction, and all the read alouds from mama too. My youngest is learning to read now (she’s my one I get to teach since my son taught himself)!! We are really enjoying the journey, and I can see her excitement! Such an amazing blessing ❤❤❤

My oldest is also hyperlexic, unfortunately that doesn't guarantee a love of reading or losing the love of reading. Mine just started reading Captain underpants and showed such an interest, it's a start

Definitely right on! I think one other thing that has helps is seeing the adults in their lives value reading and spend time reading books for pleasure. Having a family culture of reading, hearing adults talk to each other about the books they’re reading and exchanging recommendations, and seeing how a love of reading extends far beyond a childhood activity has made a difference in our home.

I’ve watched every video you ever did since following you when you were doing Sonlight and have really just followed in your footsteps. We did all the things you mentioned in this video and it’s definitely proven 🙌 My 10 year old reads multiple chapter books a week. She loves reading. My boys are still working on their fluency so I think they will love reading more when they get that down but all of them love our read alouds and it’s such a blessing to me. We stopped doing screen time on school days like 2 years ago after I heard you mention that and that has been so fruitful in my kids reading but also just their creativity. Seriously, thank you for guiding us. You inspire me so much and it makes me want to be the best mom/teacher I can be for my kids.

This was such great advice! My absolute favorite part of homeschooling is reading aloud with them and I will read to them all the way through as well! Teaching the Bible and reading aloud will be the best memories for me when my journey is done. 💜💚💜

Great content! I have definitely lived with regret for pushing my oldest who turned out to have severe dyslexia. 2 of my 4 struggle so much and reading will probably never become easy or enjoyable, but they have learned to love "reading with your ears"! Audio books can be a wonderful way to instill the love of a good story ❤️

My oldest when in private school she saw reading as something not fun. Now that we homeschool it took the pressure off and made fun reading again. I enjoy reading more now as an adult then when in school because of the pressure. Books are a big part of our life, book stores are our family fun activity lol. Now that we are building the only request we have is a library and my husbands cried seeing how much our kids have learned on their because of books.

I agree with all of this and dairy of a wimpy kid books are truly horrible! My Autistic, oldest son started getting into those while in public school and i seen a very negative change in him! He started to "become" like & say things like he was wimpy and he couldn't do anything....I immediately discussed this with my husband & we put a stop to it. I even told the teacher to not allow him to get any more! She later kindof encouraged it again, but i took care of it..... He hasn't touched one since and was mad at me at first, but got through the process of letting it go! I believe some teachers are too afraid to hurt feelings and don't have concern over a situation or even try to listen to the parents. Public school is terrible for a lot of reasons! Thankfully i can now control what they have access to in our homeschool! Thank u for this video & many others! 💗

Another great source for read alouds is The Read Aloud Family by Sarah Mackenzie(sp?). A great read as a mom but she also put lists for each age group in the book as well, so helpful!

My oldest has always had a love of reading. When he was in elementary he always took a book to school and I cant tell you how many times his teachers would send me notes home about how they had to take his book away because he was reading when they didn’t want him to. His school mates would also incessantly tease him about how he was always reading. It was the most ridiculous thing! He is in college now and still a wonderful reader which has helped him so much in school.

Thank you for this video. It was very validating. We are doing Kindergarten right now. There are so many programs of “do this and your child will excel.” We are doing TGATB but the booster cards are more of a guide. We go between TGATB readers and Bob books. I love the slow and steady foundation my son is getting. I hope his love of reading now just continues to grow.

Thank you for this video. I think I personally put a ton of pressure on them...and now they hate it! I think it is also tied to the whole concept of heavy testing on what they have read from when they were in regular school. My son loves when we read his books for the lessons together but I felt like I should not and I should allow him to read on his own. However I know the school system mentality sometimes gets the best of me! I am going to try reading with him more even if he is going to 7th. So thank you for this inspirational video.

My daughter hates reading because the school made it a requirement and she had to answer questions about the book everyday. We will be homeschooling next year and she and I are reading together more to try and foster her reading skills and her desire to read.

We kinda have the same philosophy here, I'm letting them choose the books they want as long as it align with our values. They are still young but I value high quality books and we read them together. Also I'm a huge book reader, they see me read in my free time instead of being on my phone leading by exemple.

Every night before bed, I read to my daughter. She loves it. It is not just helping her to read. The books bring up so many ideas to talk about. Hard work, being grateful, empathy, honest, and personal responsibility. And of course I sneak in my history books for kids. You should see rhe short history lectures she dies with me.

I would love to hear what books your kids read for their age group or a video scan of your bookcase! I’m seeing many books that go under the radar cause parents don’t catch the stuff inside I.e. diary of a wimpy kid and etc. I think it’s easy for parents to “overlook” books because they are so happy their child did pick a book and not a video game. Yes share more! Lol I too love the comments from community about “you don’t see that” type of comments. Big compliment for sure 😍

I love reading and would read to my son almost nightly since he was a baby. He went through the school system until 3rd grade and was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD. While in public school the teachers would tell me he wants to read books that are too advanced for his reading level. I said well do you let him? They said no we make him pick out books in his reading level but he couldn’t read below his grade level either because then that was a problem. My sons love for learning quickly died and I have yet to get it back. We started homeschooling him for 4th grade and he’s now about to start 6th grade. At the moment all I can get him to read are subtitles to shows/movies in other languages. He still really enjoys listening to me read he said it’s like watching a movie in his head…lol.

I have never been able to be consistent with reading aloud to my kids. We love it but can go weeks between doing so. We just jump right into all their other lessons. When do you have your read a loud time? I've tried doing it while they eat their lunch. But then I can't eat 😂 My kids LOVE reading and sometimes get in trouble for reading when they need to do other things 😂 but I do think it's important to have mom read aloud like you said.

Gosh...great minds think alike..LOL! I completely agree with you on types of books allowed in my home. I recently returned the " diary of a wimpy kid" books that was given to my son. Do or have any of your kids struggled with reading comprehension? I have three kids that are reading, the two that do not struggle enjoy reading, but my one that has comprehension issues detests reading even books that are on topics that he likes. I read to them a lot, and they all have the same boundaries regarding screen time. So far, this is the only thing I can pinpoint that is making a difference in who likes to read in my home and who does not. Any thoughts?

How do you find good books for your kids? I’ve had a hard time finding good books. We’ve gone to the library and pick up books and now a lot of the books I pick up are “inclusive” books, or they have bad behavior. How can I find good books for my family?

You may well already know this, but beware of the newer Nancy Drew books. My daughter got one for her birthday last year. I think it was from 2020. She brought it to me and showed me that there was a man in a dress. On the next page it was talking about "his husband". Keeping our kids safe is getting trickier and trickier. That made me sad, though, because I have always loved those books and assumed they were safe. Shame on me, I guess. 😔
