For everyone commenting that you find these in your backyards as young, please leave them there unless they're hurt. This is how baby mockingbirds learn, they have a few day to week long period where they are on the ground learning to fly while their parents occasionally feed them.

I would have, but the mom was no where and he was just randomly on the ground when we got back in the car (bout an hour) the mother never swooped us and was no where to be found. I think his leg was hurt he could not move that well.

Yes thats true! Caution if you have dogs or cats who kill baby fledglings. We have a cat who adopted us and there is about 8 other rescued and some feral cats that hang out in the neighborhood. I found one of the fledglings alive trying to learn how to survive with the help of the mother and father bird. I found 2 of the baby fledglings chewed in several pieces on the ground due to the feral cats killing them. In such cases as this, please rescue them if you have this problem or they will def8nitely most likely be killed.

@tobyadog
@tobyadog Ай бұрын
@@raw_oysteris the baby eating? you kinda gotta force its mouth open and they'll prolly eat. I fed mine catfood like every 2 hours, 24/7, it was awful 😂 If you're gonna keep it it's like... LONG TERM (20yrs). honestly I would not do it again (or recommend it). Cages are horrible so mine roamed free around the house. But that meant that there was bird poop everywhere. He's been dead for five or so years now and I still find bird poop in the house. Mine lived to seven years but was killed by a visitor coming over our house. He was resting ontop of the bathroom doorway and the dude slammed the door full power for some stupid reason. The bird died instantly. I'm actually really thankful for that because idk what I would have done if the bird was on the floor screaming in pain, injured. Anyways, they're actually pretty low maintenance pets, besides the birdpoop. Mine knew how to eat from the bowl of mealworms himself lol. But, imo, you can't leave them alone all day if you work. I live in a household where somebody is always home, in the kitchen usually, to provide entertainment to the bird. And throughout bird's life, I still felt like the poor guy wasn't satisfied with the cage (entire house) he was stuck in. I honestly felt really bad, especially during mating season, when he would scream at the window for hours, deep into the night, not getting any sleep and constantly freaking out because he's in heat. Once we went to Disneyland and left the bird alone in the house for a week. When we came back he looked horrified. Legit acted different, he fell into a deep depression. You can tell when they're depressed because they're dead silent. No singing or chirping from the guy for weeks. Overall, my recommendation is no, you probably shouldn't keep him as a pet. This comes from my belief that a house is not a big or complex enough environment to keep a bird entertained in. Are mockingbirds easy to keep alive? Yes. Am I confident that the bird which I saved would've had a shittier life in the wild? .. No.. Not really. And I put a lot of effort in. Let me know what you decide on and please update me sometime. This is the longest I've spent on a youtube comment in a long time haha.

Legs has brought a tear to my eye... he was so sweet... I always say the saddest day of my life was when my mockingbird "Peeps" passed away. We didn't release him (like some other ones we rescued) because it was a very bad fire season, super smokey and hot. So for maybe ~13 years, we made each other happy. Peeps would always sing along when I played my harp hehe, and he loved whistling the Andy Griffith theme. He could be fiesty too sometimes! It's been over 5 years, still I miss him so much...

(feed 6 strays and have possums in the yard) feed him wet cat food every few hours and mom would bring him berries a couple times a day . Had him 5 days . The sixth he wasn't screaming in the morning and wouldn't eat tried all day and even mom couldn't get him to eat . That evening he passed in my hands . don't know what happened. I buried him in the large flower pot were I put him for mom to feed . Its been 2 days and shes still bringing berries and leaving them . I'm so sad . Every animal I've ever saved lived a full life . Don't know what happened 😢

I was going to get ice cream with my cousins, and then I see this bird dragging it’s wings (a old fledgling mocking bird). Two teenagers passed the poor bird and yanked it away with some kind of thing they had, (I think it was a purse) so I picked up the bird and kept it home until it healed, I went outside to let it go…it didn’t want to leave. I waited a few minutes, trying to scare it away, it just flew closer to me and my mom said it wants to be with me.. so it’s my pet now 💕💕❤️💕

He is now a month since i found him and his tail is an inch and a half long now. I am trying to get him to eat on his own right now. Still need more time i think. But your videos of legs are so cool. He is so attached to you. The one i have still seems pretty wild and afraid of me at times. I see you let legs outside and explore. I know if i let mine out like that, he would defiantly fly away. He doesn't like me holding him in my hands like legs would let you do. Maybe you spent more time with him everyday as i am very busy working during the day so i don't get to spend much time with him as i would like to. So what ever happened to legs? Do you still have him?

I just came on KZbin looking for info on mockingbird fledglings, because we have one! She lost her parents and we started caring for her about 2 days ago. She’s about at the stage Legs is at around the 7 minute mark. It’s so rewarding! She stays outside but we bought a cage to keep her safe at night, but explores the neighbor yard during the day, and she comes to me when I call her to come eat (which is a lot!!). She LOVES to sleep in my hands or my sweat shirt hood, and especially loves snuggling at night! We are feeding her the same things you are. :) How long did Legs stay with you, and did he come back after he left to go live his bird life? 🤍 Thank you for sharing!!

Hi! You can feed it Purina kitten kibble. Put the kibble water to moisten, before you feed make sure you dap it with a paper towel to prevent aspiration. For insects you can feed mealworms, before you feed cut off head. You can also give it some small pieces of blue berries, raspberries, and apple. Don’t feed bread, not that good for them, you can feed soft cat or dog food mashed up, crush egg shells up like powder (but first put in oven @ 220 for 20 minutes, this kills salmonella), add a tad bit to the food, miss it up well, when it gets full, will stop eating, you can also feed boiled eggs chopped up, raw liver cut in tiny pieces, even mill worms chopped up....

We were feeding it moist dog food with intervals of applesauce. I noticed in the mornings it would be very weak but then come around to eating in the afternoon. The second day when he was eating a lot you could actually see the growth and it looked promising. The third day for some reason he was not eating and just slumped over with no strength and literally shrunk. Maybe he was already sick. Pretty heartbreaking to see. He only started breathing with his mouth partially open during his last few minutes. I don't think it was aspiration pneumonia but also feel the applesauce was not good in the long run. When we first gave him the applesauce he seemed to have a newfound energy but noticed the stool was more reddish and liquidy whereas with the dog food they looked like little candy corns.

@@lizzardsblackrose Lizza, after exact a month of raising i let mine out and it flew away. I miss it. I wonder if it would survive. But it really has its instincts. it was coming to me and set on me , but for the last week it would eat and fly away to sit on a sealing fan. It leared how to eat and drink and catch bugs. I worry and miss it.

Took a tiny fledgling in three days ago. It has what appears to be a broken leg and toe. We let it out two times a day. Mother and father come and feed it. Then we take it in, so cats don't get it. We feed him kitty chow mixed with mealworm and egg. I don't know what to do about his poor let. A vet won't treat a wild bird and the national wildlife sanctuary here has always put anything we find down. Don't want that to happen to him. Any advice?

DON'T DO IT!!!! My hubby found a baby Mockingbird in the middle of the road, under a cat's paw almost 4 days ago??? (just like you!!!) and to be perfectly honest, it can NEVER be safely released back to the wild and here's why: Out there is SERIOUS business... from foraging for food in the right places, at the right times of the year, to protection from danger, what is danger, where is safe, what does safety means, etc, etc etc.... These are things only MOM could possibly teach. You as a human could only teach him love, and that your hand means food, protection and comfort. Birds imprint on humans after a little while (as you probably have already noticed) and that means that he sees you as MOM, he looks to you for safety, for food, for comfort. He believes he's human just like you. And there is nothing you can do to change that. There is a reason why all and every single wild life authority tells people "Don't pick any baby animal up from the wild, you will not be saving it". If you picked it up, and i'm sure there must have been some imminent danger you saw fit to save it from, it's ok. Just know that you just got yourself a life commitment until that animal is grown and old age. Please take this from experienced, wild animal people aka rehabilitators. We've been doing this for a while. In order to release any baby animal safely, it must be done a certain way where the animal doesn't see you as the provider... and STILL it is no guarantee that it will survive afterwards because of the reasons i told you at the beginning. Mom is the only one that could possibly teach her young how to survive out there. So welcome to the world of foster permanent moms.🥰

Hey I got one in my patio. Found it last night on my walk. I got dried meal worms, can I moisten them and feed it to him? Hes in a basket I filled with dried grass in one of my trees. Hoping he doesnt imprint. One of your commenst suggested Wet kitty kibble ? I feed it wet cornmeal but he needs protein
@lizzardsblackrose
@lizzardsblackrose 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, how is the bird doing now? Is the bird a hatchling, nestling, or fledgling? And yes, put the mealworms in water to moisten them. Just make sure they aren't too wet before feeding. If you can it would be better for the bird if you feed it live mealworms. You can get them from petsmart or petco cut off the heads when feeding, You can also give it moist cat food (make sure it not too watery just mushy, if its too watery there could be a chance of aspiration.) They can also have raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and banana.

@@lizzardsblackrose thanks for replying! He spent the second night in my patio. I believe he's a fledgling. He has plenty of feathers and hops around all day but doesnt fly yet. I let him in the garden and surpervise from the window. I give him wet cat kibble now. I gave him wet cornmeal the first night because I had nothing. Can he eat worms and bugs I find? Im sure it has to be mushed first🤢 lol. But thanks for tips!
@lizzardsblackrose
@lizzardsblackrose 4 жыл бұрын
@@emblem9242 Okay, that means their a fledgling. That's good because they will be much easier to care for than a younger bird. And that could probably be okay. If killed first before feeding they don't need to be mushed. If you can Mealworms would be much better. The problem with earthworms is that they can give the birds parasites that could harm them. Heres some info i found about it. www.purplemartin.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19273#:~:text=Earthworms%2C%20also%20carry%20a%20parasite,as%20well%20as%20adult%20birds.&text=Gapeworm%20eggs%20can%20also%20be,that%20naturally%20feed%20on%20Earthworms.

We have a nest in our lime tree, they have hatched and are being fed from mom and dad. What to do when they fall from the nest and can’t fly, we have a hunter dog who secures our back yard, so this could turn into a possible rescue operation. Unless mom and dad can take them to a secured safety area. Should prove to be interesting. Maybe our dog will friend the chicks. Now the mockingbirds are keeping a tight nest.

@@Midnight_playzX you can feed it superworms by cutting off head and cutting body in smaller segments. kitten kibble is a good source for protein, I use Purina kitten kibble by soaking it in water till soft never mushy and falling apart. Before feeding always make sure to pat dry with paper towel so its not dripping wet to avoid aspiration pneumonia. You can also feed it apple, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries.
