It is disappointing to have to cull an animal, even if it is near the end. The rifle is starting to grow on me.

@@baral6747 we are hoping to put together a more in depth video when butchering time comes in the fall but it can sometimes be really cold and we aren't always able.

If it had a serious disease the other pigs would have also showed signs of infection. When we culled it we also did a rudimentary autopsy. We were satisfied that it was a diet issue. If there was any doubt we would not have eaten it. It was delicious and nobody has health issues after consumption. It is a nice gun. Thanks for noticing and for watching.

Yes. You definitely made that disease up. The point remains though. The small farmer and homesteader must be diligent and observant to ensure the livestock remains healthy. We want to be able to offer the highest quality of meat.....and we do. My pastured pig is better tasting and better for you than any manufactured pig. Period

Sorry you had a cull the pig early. It was close to your desired weight at least. How much useable meat so you off a 200 lbs pig like the one you have here?

I think hanging weight was 200, dressed was around 130. We got around 90 pounds, but that includes the head. The head weighs about 15 pounds. It's not so much the loss in terms of weight but the fact everything is smaller. Have to cook extra pork chops at every meal. Still delicious. Thanks for watching.

So I'm curious. Is it a big deal to cook and eat a sick pig? My boy eats and drinks but he coughs and he really doesn't do much other than lay around. I just don't know if I should eat the meat?

This is a judgement call best made when butchering. Is your pig an old pig? Is your pig an only pig? A cough would usually be a lung issue. Since you don't eat the lungs, I would assume the rest of the meat is good. When butchering our pig we found that it had intestinal issues. Constipation is our diagnosis. The meat was still good. When butchering our chickens this year we found white spots on one of the livers. We discarded that chicken. Discarding a pig would be a bigger deal. If you take it to a butcher he should be able to tell you if there is any anomaly to the meat. When in doubt I think it is best to cull the animal. Especially if you have more than one.
