Is the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale the BEST new sport luxury SUV to BUY?

I'm personally not in the market for this type of vehicle, but I must say I feel a great sense of relief. When I first heard about the Tonale (and that it was based on the Jeep Renegade platform), I was very distressed. I know Alfa needs product, but an Alfa that handles like a Jeep is no Alfa. I am very happy to hear that Alfa stayed true to its heritage and with that 50/50 balance the Tonale handles like an Alfa Romeo should! Me and my Giulia Ti are no longer distressed. Gratzi! 🙂

If you are an Alfa fan…don’t worry about the Renegade relation. It only exists at the most basic of “platform” relationship. Alfa engineers took that platform and worked their magic on it to achieve the 50/50 weight distribution and they made sure it handled like an Alfa should.

Thank you for continually giving Alfa the love it deserves Joe! Too few channels give this historic brand the time of day and I've loved every mile in my 2021 Stelvio. 347ft-tq is impressive, but the 0-60 and fuel economy is a tad underwhelming. Nevertheless, sharp styling and new tech will make it a standout for new buyers. I just hope Dodge doesn't undercut them on price/value ratio too much, considering this was Alfa's design.

As a life long Alfa owner, not so sure about Alfa interiors lately. Original owner of 2017 Giulia Quad where there is red contrast stitching everywhere and alcantara on the seats and carbon fiber everywhere...My 2020 Stelvio Ti Sport (top trim at the time below the Quad) is Trofeo White with beautiful red seats, red lower dash, red contrast stitching on steering wheel and leather wrapped steering wheel,red center console, red inserts in the door cards...it's tasty and bright and beautiful...After 2021, Alfa cheaped out on the interiors....no contrast stitching, if you get red seats only the seats are red...nothing else !! It looks like they were stolen out of another car and plopped into a dark, boring, bland black on black on black interior...Both cars have been great, will never trade the Quad and would on trade the Stelvio for a 2020 / 2021 Stelvio Quad.....

We really enjoy your vehicle reviews! My wife bought the blue Tonale sharp SUV! Here’s her feedback and hope you share with Alfa Romeo especially as it’s a new model: >>PROS: stylish, infotainment center, color options, hybrid, handling, DNA, optional auto/manual, unleaded/premium, comfortable seats, sharp interior, charging stations/ports, engine/power, cameras, media/car play, kick hatch, hatch cover, auto headlights/brights/cruise control, logos/light indicators, fun to drive! >CONS/Zonks: ONLY 31 miles on electric, small tank/max 240 miles, backseat too small/limited legroom, dash time & outside temperature so TINY, having to charge frequently, small tank so refuel frequently, engine feels like it’s catching/slipping after 2k miles driven, sound system sounds basic, not enough storage (sunglasses, phone, side pockets, tiny center console, federal Hybrid allowance made the vehicle choice more appealing but if didn’t have that would be unhappy with purchase. (Past luxury/sports SUV owners, wanted to try AR Tonale, but probably won’t keep it after the lease like we have in the past with Lexus multiple times). Hope this was helpful, thanks!

I'm loving the grill front I'm loving the rotory dial wheels and the color for once I'm likely it black the blue I'm loving the flag colour on the side mirrors. Alfa romeo is in the black financially( meaning proffitable) and has been for a few years. One of the reasons for this, is when they developed the tonale, that is intellectual property of the alfa romeo brand. Dodge using most of the tonales architecture for the hornet, wasn't a free acquisition. Transferring the rights to use the car for dodge wasn't a gift, or stolen; it was filed under accounting for a sale. Alfa romeo is already a winner from this project financially. Making a deal in this regards was brilliant. It ensures that we will get 2-4 more vehicles from AR on top of the stelvio, guilia, tonale. You need bread and butter cars to get the possible 2 seater that we would like to see tear up the roads(or better yet, be driving one.) But for a bread and butter car, it's a really good car. Stop comparing this to a dodge hornet, when you break down the trim levels there's not a 10k$ difference it's more like a +/- 3k$ difference. I've seen it layed out where the alfa is a much better deal. But again Alfa Romeo is luxury car brand, dodge is not. Alfa romeo doesn't compete with Ford Chevrolet and Dodge. They compete with mainly German and English car makes. I've seen 0-60 estimates of 6 seconds to 5.5 seconds. Please don't be surprised if in reality this thing can do 5.2 seconds or lower on the 0-60, 347lb ft of torque is a lot for the vehicle. I think this car will get more respect when the guy in a BMW x1 loses a lane change easily to a tonale. I have an 18 stelvio ti sport. I don't know what the paper readout is for a 0-60, honestly hard to find an accurate readout. A TI , stelvio has about a 5.2-3 0-60. I know I'm not the only one who drives a ti sport, and scratches their head at 5.3 seconds and knows it's damn well in the high 4's stock. In 18' upon the TI sport was best in trim level vs German competition, and in 23' still is on top or atleast not noticeably surpassed. The tonale I have the same faith in as far a segment competiveness in the luxury market. It will be relevant now and at least a few years from now. 2018 alfa stelvio 0 $ spent, outside of oil changes, breaks and tires. 60k miles problem free. Bring it germany

I have to drive a CX-9 for the three rows of seats, along with a couple classic Alfas for weekends, so don't have the need myself, but I love the way these look and she'd love the economy (she couldn't care less that it doesn't drive like the Stelvio).

Love this review have watched about 10 of these so far and I liked that you showed the actual car. I watched one yesterday where the 6ft guy used his video angles to make this look like a tiny hatchback. I test drove one and it’s my top pick at the moment, if anyone has one can you tell me please; from a full tank what is full driving distance to empty and are you having any problems with it being a hybrid. I don’t know cars so will be relying on the honesty of mechanics. The only reason I’m changing my current car is because I get no mileage out of it.

Looks great and all the tech seems great! Alfa/Italian you know it's going to handle. Right now drive a 2019 Volt plug in hybrid is the way to go it extends the range. This Alfa would be my ideal with a 100 electric range 300 gas. My Volt is 55-70 electric 340+ gas in LA. Great review!

I actually think that hybrid's make the most sense if they can get at least 40 to 50 mile range because if most of your driving on a daily basis is 50 miles or less, then you can run pure EV, and only for longer distances would you need gasoline. If I can afford a new car, then it will be hybrid that I can get at least 40 or 50 miles pure EV. I wish this had at least 40 or 50 mile on pure EV and had decent 0-60 in EV mode.

The Tonale is 45 - 49k, and the nearly identical Dodge Hornet is 30 - 45k. Gonna be tough for Alfa to sell the same product with just a slightly prettier skin. The Tonale has terrific colors. This small vehicle was designed to fit into European cities, which are cramped compared to US cities. It will seem too small for most Americans who have become accustomed to very large vehicles. 178 inches versus the BMW 3 series at 185 inches. This car is clearly targeted against the BMW 3 series. Way more advanced than the BMW technically. Love the powertrain on this car, esp. the Hybrid version. This thing has enough to run daily errors purely on electricity, so really a fantastic compromise, which is what engineering is all about.

The tonale is only available with the hybrid powertrain which means it competes only with the RT variant of the hornet so it's 40k vs 43k. The Tonale also comes with 1 more year of warranty. Which for these cars is definitely worth it

But if you go for the green color, which is by far the prettiest Tonale color, you are adding another $2.2k... the matte finish color "Blue Steele" i have yet to see in the videos, but matte finish cars are gorgeous, and that is an advantage for the Hornet.
