The thing I love about Sheldon is how hard he tries. He fails miserably, but he keeps trying. On the surface, the gifts are horribly racist, but he doesn't understand about such things even though he grew up in Texas and went to school in Germany. He's not even the "head in the sand" type racist where he never tries to think about other people. He is incapable of fully embracing the nuances of racial tension. He doesn't get that level of human interaction anymore than he gets ANY human interaction, yet time after time he goes back in and gives it another shot. You know he thought about those gifts for days, and made lists in his head attempting to make some kind of connection with these people, and the best he could do is address the obvious. Racism and inappropriateness aside, Amazon lists the Complete Roots collection at $35 and Jackie Chan 6 Movie Set at $29 on Blueray. He spent a couple of hundred dollars only to insult the Hell out of his bosses. Great character and a magnificent (if television) example of highly functional autism.

As a black woman I took it as Ignorance, racial bias is not always intentional. Everyone is born without knowledge and proper social constructs. Right and wrong must be learned, and not typically instinctually possessed. On top of that, he was going to give a Professor "Wu" filmography from Jackie Chan, who is of Chinese descent. It's not about racism, it's about how we think and how great we were.For example, give a British a full album of "The Beatles", he wouldn't be offended, or give an American "The History of American Revolution", they would take it gladly. It's because they have something to be proud of as Being British or Being Americans. On the other hand, most blacks can't be proud of themselves as being blacks. So they find everything offensive even if it's related to their culture, lifestyle or social norms. that's not correct. iq has nothing to do with getting roots as a gift. iq is like logical intelligence, not social cues. i know it's never been in the show but sheldon has very many autistic traits and although most autistic people are completely able to know that it's not an appropriare gift (coming from a person with adhd and overlapping aspergers traits), sheldon doesn't. and social "iq" is very different from the typical iq score. kripke definitely has a higher social iq, but possibly not the intelligence one.

I used to work with a guy just like that.He was really hard to deal with because he had no idea that he was so different, and not in a good way.He eventually offended absolutely everyone, he just had to be moved to a position where he was completely isolated.
