(Āṛāūī) (Ref) Babhan āve jāī, babhan āve jāī. Mor man lāga babhanavā. The babhan comes and goes. My heart feels for (is interested in) this babhan. (I love this babhan, I adore him). He returned, hey, he came back. 1. Ohe, babhanavā kī ekta hī ā`khiyā` (ānkhiyān). Tāke sāri (chāṛi) oṛh, tāke sāri oṛh. Mor man lāga babhanavā. (Ref) This babhan has only one eye. It is all over the place. (i.e., he has a roving eye and is always looking at stuff, including ladies perhaps. He, of course, has two eyes.) I love this babhan. 2. Ohe, babhanavā kī ekta hī goṛavā (godavā). (Hai daiyā !) Bhāge sāri oṛh, bhāge sāri oṛh. Mor man lāga babhanavā (se !). (Ref ) This babhan has only one leg. (Oh father!) It runs (flees) into every place (abode). (i.e., he is a busy-body, very inquisitive, and goes where he is not exactly wanted. He, of course, has two legs.) I am crazy about this babhan. 3. Ohe, babhanavā kī ekta hī hāthavā. Chhuave sāri (sārā) oṛh, chhuave sāri oṛh. Mor man lāga babhanavā. (2) This babhan has only one arm. It touches everything (everybody) (i.e., he likes to interfere in other people's business, & perhaps touches the ladies, but not very inappropriately. He, of course, has two arms.) I adore this babhan. 4. Āvat jātī, ajī, āvat jātī. (Relā) Āvat jātī, ajī, āvat jāt. Āvat jātī, ajī, āvat jāt. Babhan āve jāī, babhan āve jāī. Mor man lāga babhanavā (2). …….. A babhan is a Bhūmihar brahmin (babhan is the Pali word for brahmin). The Bhūmihars (bhūmi = earth, hal = plough) usually own land and are considered as part of the Saryuparīn branch of the Kanyakubj brahmins. The original folk singer was probably a lady - and she is making playful fun of her family priest. To emphasize that this is really all in jest, she keeps saying how much she adores her babhan. .
