Most of these scenes are from films in the 80s and 90s. He quit smoking in his real-life a long time ago and about 20 years ago quit smoking in his films too to prevent his fans from picking up this habit. His off-screen persona is very different from his on-screen style as he is really humble and down-to-earth. He has two distinct types of films -- he alternates between character-based and drama roles and crowd-pleaser action films (we call them Masala films in India) since he is one of those rare actors that is both a great actor/performer and a great crowd-pleasing icon. Yes, he is a HUGE star in south Indian cinema and has been for decades. The trick cigarette moves and the hair pieces are part of his signature. He's as bald as Patrick Stewart and has no issues with it, but in his movies he always has these funky hairstyles. Go you remember the trailer with the cell phone eagle? The thousands of phones flew up into the air to create the moving flying attacking eagle? And the robot with the hundred spinning machine guns in his hands? That was him. :)

Actually, Rajinikanth didn't do a cigarette scene in any of his films for at least 15 years until 2019, instead opting for his other signature styles with shades and gum. He also quit smoking for real from 2012 (give or take a year) due to health issues, and has since been pleading to his fans to avoid/quit, pointing to his real life experiences. He had 1 small cigarette scene in 2019, where he himself gave the disclaimer about the hazards of smoking in a follow up dialogue.
