My husband and I always "dress" when we travel. If someone complains that a suit isn't comfortable, maybe it doesn't fit them correctly. Wouldn't the world be a little nicer and more polite if we all took just a little bit of effort? Keep going, Rajiv!

This man is masculine elegance personified, really like these videos. As someone whose traveled across the Atlantic quite a bit, I follow the same principle of dressing well and wearing the heavy stuff. For packing but also you are more likely to find supportive airline staff to help in difficult situations if you dress well. It's stupid and I wish it wasn't like this but it is unfortunately. I dress very casually normally but when I travel I look incredible, nails, hairs, make up, etc. The amount of times I've skated by paying for luggage or got upgraded to better seats speak for themselves. I couldn't recommend it more.

I do the same coz i know a few cabin crew who say they’re usually more attentive to well dressed people, the only problem is you’re more likely to get searched at the security check because you’re clean and not straight from the beach smelly and if you look too expensive they think you’ve got a lot of money and might be a drug dealer 😂

@@TayWoode I pretty much always wear a suit and often a burberry trench when flying and I am very rarely if ever given any extra inspection. I used to get "random explosives residue" searched quite often but that was when I was less well dressed when flying.

There's only 1 thing I would add to the bag - 2nd pair of shoes! It's important to let shoes, especially leather ones, to rest for at least a day between wears. I also had shoes break when traveling and that's not an item I want to be shopping for in stress and rush. A beautiful and inspiring video as always! ❤

Yes!!! I learned my lesson on a trip to Mexico City. I live in CA, so I never think of rain! When i twll the rain in mexico is REAL 😂 I got soaked and had to wear the same miserable shoes 😅 I think I ended up buying a pair there. Anyway, I always carry 1 extra pair and flip flops... I never shower in a strangers shower or hotel room without my flip-flops 🙃

I couldn't agree more! Four years ago, before travelling to Portugal, I patiently looked for a pair of slippers that I could take along. Then I came across a Japanese company that makes reusable, washable slippers; it seemed like a good idea. I bought one pair of wool-like slippers, and when I wore them, they were reservable! The second pair was bamboo with a bit of plastic on the undersoles, I guess to prevent slipping. And a couple of handkerchiefs. They are both very light and easy to pack. The name of the company is Kolo House Shoes. 😊

After a few years of considering the Wool& 100 Days Dress challenge, I finally committed this spring. I wore the same black lightweight merino wool sheath dress with various accessories, dressed up or down for 100 days straight, and it was truly life altering. During this time I took two, week long business trips. Besides undergarments, a nightgown, I only packed 3 other pieces of clothing, and a small bar of handmade wool wash for spot cleaning or laundry in the hotel. The temperature regulating and odor resistant properties of natural wool means that at the end of the day, you can hang your garment and let it air out overnight, and it’s good to go the next day, no funky dirty laundry or B.O. smell at all. Unless I spilled something on myself, as I am known to do, I only washed my dress once a week. No decisions about what to wear, completely comfortable, no worries about how my outfit looks and able to get fully dressed in literally under 2 minutes has made mornings so much easier. Since completing the challenge, I have purchased 2 other items from Wool& to round out my capsule wardrobe and could not be happier!

Merino wool is truly a magical fabric. When I travel in winter, I bring these lightweight Bella Freud merino sweaters with me. They’re cute on their own, but also function as an insulating base layer. You can wear Merino over and over again-no smell! Expensive, but the best money I’ve ever spent. I bought one second hand, and some of them were gifts. Merino is especially convenient as a college student. It keeps me from freezing in the dorms.

I’ve had a cheap bag that’s about the same as the tumi one for like fifteen years that’s totally fine. It probably cost $10 at target when I got it in middle school lol. Invest in heavily used things like shoes or a mattress, and always make sure to care for the things you already have anyway, pricey or not.

Yeah, NZ here and I recently had a trip to a slightly out-of-the-way part Europe that each way was about 35 hours (had to go via North America rather than Asia so it all took longer) - but over the years I've found some combinations of things that look pretty good but still feel okay for sleeping in.

I feel the same way about traveling from LA to The Middle East with stops in Europe. I always travel with just a carry on but there is no way I would dress up to get on a plane, not even traveling first or business class! Leggings and comfy sweaters and either Uggs or sneakers!!! I'm quite proud because I followed a lot of these tips intuitively on my week long trip to Italy recently. I managed with an overcoat, a light jacket, 3 pairs of shoes, 3 pajamas, 5 tops, 3 bottoms, 2 swimsuits and 1 dress (plus undies and socks). Only needed to carry an overnight duffel bag and a large tote (which I packed all of my toiletries, accessories and two extra purses in). Maybe a bit more than Rajiv, but I'm a lady and I need options 💅. Highly recommend washing clothes in the hotel sink. In lieu of laundry detergent I just used the hotel shampoo 🤷🏾‍♀️😂.

I have done the same. Either I have used the hotel's shower bar or the shampoo, or I go to the nearest pharmacy and buy small paper detergent sheets to wash stuff with. Last time I was at the airport someone was hustled away to a holding room. Later all of us passengers were searched for any liquids and we were told that anything metal sharp or liquids weren't allowed for public safety. How does Rajiv go through security with the metal tweezers or the nail clips? I don't know. But it makes sense that anything you can't carry, you can buy as soon as you land such as toiletries, hygienic items, etc.

Rajiv, you are a gentleman and a man of distinction. I went to Morocco this summer for almost 2 weeks and packed a backpack and carryon with art supplies in it. If I had found an art supply store there, I would have just taken the backpack. Packing light eases the mind. Traveling is stressful enough. I had a cousin who shipped her stuff to my grandma’s house for Thanksgiving ahead of time. So she travelled with nothing essentially. If you factor in all the checked back age fees it’s genius! And saves one’s back. She is the master of light packing. Also, I just knew you were gonna pack laundry detergent! Did you make the detergent and put bluing in it for your shirts?

@@leamubiu He does NOT mention the detergent he uses. He mentions to use, "Mrs. Stewart's Bluing" agent which you add diluted to the wash machine (you can add it to the fabric softner compartment). I uses a yellow detergent bottle, which makes me think its Sunlight detergent. I wouldn't attempt bluing while traveling: the risk of staining a sink or tub, or even the dye itself leaking is to be a risk. And you wouldn't add bluing to detergent. That said, laundry strips exist and are far lighter than liquid detergent.

I will not gamble on the brand of the actual detergent, since I am thoroughly ignorant of what is sold in the US-we don't even have Mrs Stewart's bluing liquid or Bar Keeper's Friend here... Your advice about bluing while traveling seems sound. If he's put bluing in that bottle, it must be pretty diluted already. But he did say in his Washing Whites video that he did not use bluing while on travel, and that the clothes he takes on travels are noticeably less of a crisp white than his other garments. Laundry strips are so convenient! I also pack a few, they take no space, and are great for cotton and polyester; but I usually bring a bottle of silk-and-wool detergent, since I often wear silk tops against my skin, and cashmere sweaters.

My sister used to go on holiday with 3 cotton dresses, 3 pairs of underwear, and a spare pair of cloth shoes with a teeny bit of makeup. It all fitted into a little square cross body bag. I had a ginormous suitcase with 700 pairs of knickers in it!

I don't know if Rajiv reads his comments but I am very frightened. He has accomplished something you don't find very often in our global culture - Authenticity. His words appear to match his actions. When he speaks of how he wants to live and what brings him joy, you can watch his catalogue of videos and see he is 100% serious. There was a time when people were allowed/encouraged to see the world, pursue the arts, and embrace other cultures. Sadly, his type of 'journey in life' has become rare and many undervalue these opportunities. It usually takes a lifetime of joy and pain to reach this 'state of mind' yet, he has done so at a relatively young age. There is a saying, 'Your past does not define your future, but it certainly helps shape it'. Rajiv seeks out the past to inform his future and shares it with his audience. I know of many people who have ventured from other places to find success on either coast of the USA. Some have flourished but many have been consumed by the struggle. I'll be waiting patiently for his autobiography as his journey to solace will be a 'must-read-story'. Thank you R.S.

I like packing cubes. I started using them a couple of years ago. When you get to your hotel you only need to take the packing cube out of the luggage and put it straight into a drawer. I would also suggest, if visiting the UK, is to bring a fold up, lightweight, waterproof jacket (with a hood). When you are in the UK, if you don't want to buy an extra sweater or whatever, every town has a number of charity shops/ goodwill. You can pick up anything for a couple of pounds.

I love watching your calming videos and how you constantly give useful, practical advice, because many people just haven't learned so many little life skills. I've been a life long traveler and have my own system (6 weeks in Europe or Latin America, etc with a small carry-on capable) Tumi yes! I'm partial to the laptop backpack myself because no matter how loaded it is, it is easy for 5'3" me to carry comfortably. Travel size toiletries rule for us women who need more than you do :) Laundry soap yes, but I take it in bar form--one less liquid to deal with. A skinny little stretchy line to dry stuff on (some come with built in loops so no clips needed). Hair dryers are usually found in hotel rooms and can help dry undies and tops quickly. I also always use featherweight packing cubes to keep things organized and compressed, and if going from place to place, make it easy to unpack and pack up quickly. One doubles as a dirty clothes bag (fold the clothes flat so it doesn't "expand" in your bag!) Keep those wonderful videos coming, please!

A common refrain I hear as I watch KZbin fashion videos is praise for the comfort of garments. With the exception of shape-wear, all of my clothes are comfortable. If clothing is uncomfortable maybe selecting a size larger would alleviate the problem. As a woman I would find it impossible to spend a week abroad with only a single valise and a purse. For starters, shoes. They take up so much space but you must have at least four pairs of previously worn shoes. Sturdy well fitting walking shoes that won’t give you blusters or corns, athletic shoes (aka sneakers, gym shoes, trainers), black leather pointed toe pumps with a heel height no taller than 2 1/2 inches for dressier night time events and beach flip-flops for pool side or bedroom slippers. So that you don’t appear to be in a perpetual state of mourning, don’t just pack black and white clothing. Pack several multi-colored scarves and a cashmere pashmina to be draped over your traveling outfit to guard against a chilly plane. Bring 3 pairs of pants: black, white and jeans; all should be high waisted with elastic waistbands. You need jewelry. Leave your expensive treasures at home and buy good fake diamonds, pearls and simple gold and silver necklaces. For electronics devices you must download Netflix, Britbox, Audible and e-books for your tablet. Remember to bring headphones, cables and portable chargers. I also like to bring an extension cord/surge protector with USB outlets. Hotel rooms never have enough outlets.

Agree with you 100% Rajiv!! I too do laundry while traveling. It’s so worth it to wash out things overnight than to carry a heavy bag. I learned this after a friend took a tumble going up a Paris airport elevator, lost control of her large suitcase and running into me on the way down! Neither of us were hurt badly, thankfully, after a Good Samaritan at the bottom hit the STOP button. But it was the last time either of us took anything but a small roller bag on a trip. Freedom!!!

1. I love Tumi. I've been using Tumi since the early 80's for travelling, and, I still have my original Tumi backpack. And yes, I travel a LOT!! 2. Do you only take the shoes that you wear on the plane? 3. I'd just taken a sip of coffee when you said (in that funny accent), "you don't want your pits smelling like an old cheese sandwich...", I spewed my coffee all over my clothes and keyboard. So cool seeing this ..When I was a young pottery student and traveling the UK I only brought layers and a few extras for not staying in hotels (meaning a small tent and sleeping bag ..Also to make money ; a banjo. The banjo helped with hitch hiking :) I remember leaving London with 30 pounds sterling and coming back months later with 120 :) .I did learn the hard way to travel light ..Because I made wire jewery at home I came to Wales withe an anvil in my backpack ..:) (You can ship things home as well if you need to :)

My sister in laws use Rinowa, and told me to get one. I told them that I've had my Tumi for over 20 years, and it's still in great condition. But this past summer, we took a trip to Japan, and international airlines have a different carry-on spec than American airlines, so I thought maybe I should get a Rinowa. After checking out their prices, I decided to get another Tumi which can be up to 1/2 price with sales. And I rolled that luggage through 5 cities paved with cobblestones and it's held up wonderfully!

Love this! I travel a lot, and just recently shifted to using a bag similar to yours (which I love.) The biggest challenge (maybe more for women?) - SHOES! But, it can still work. Also, great idea to bring laundry detergent. I've been using laundry sheets - even easier to pack!

Absolutely!!! My father flew for a well known airline. When we flew, we dressed up! Not only were we representing the company but elevating the experience by looking nice. I still will dress nicely. It is a state of mind really. I am not “that” uncomfortable that I cannot stand it! 😉🥰💕

I used to have to fly internationally frequently early in my career (24 hrs door to door). I took my wrinkle free dressy travel clothes and planned to launder my clothes as needed while on the road using a small bottle of camp soap (a little goes a long way). On the plane, I always changed into something to sleep in to keep my outfit wrinkle free and fresh. I would bring travel sized toiletries for in-transit and necessary medications (and copies of my prescriptions in case of travel delays).

I have so many questions! How do you keep your whites white when you're sweating in them and painting on grimy streets? What do you do about paint stains? Do you wear your boots to the way to the pool? What do you carry your daily supplies in once you're there? I studied abroad in Florence and everything I wore took such a beating that it was all completely trashed by the time I got back.

I’m all in for looking dressed and nice when flying. I was in management for a large corporation for decades. It was mandatory that both men and women wore a suit when flying. Looking good is such a positive reflection.

I don’t travel often, so I can’t say I’ve perfected the process of packing light, not having had many opportunities to make the attempt. I have however gone on two trips since making up my mind to become a light packer, and let me tell you… the satisfaction. The ease of unpacking in less than five minutes. The lack of back and arm pain. The benefits are real, and I would never go back. Love your tip about wearing your best outfit on the plane. That’s one I will definitely be implementing next time. I’m a light packer also. Glad you’re spreading the gospel. I’ve done mostly jungle travel in remote places, so I require more toiletries: first aid kit, portable clothing line for drying laundry, bar form of laundry soap, bug stuff. What do you use as an EDC for your wallet, passport, glasses, etc.

Peru for 3 weeks in a small backpack, including Cusco, hiking Machu Picchu, Huyana Picchu, 0°C hiking Rainbow Mountain, Michelin dinners and visiting friends in Lima, +40C in the Amazon, and beach time. Had an identical bottle of detergent, and only bought jewelry to keep to one bag. It was the best time ❤

FYI I figured you would have packed some walking crisp white sneakers for the walk to the beach or sandals etc. That is the only thing I felt that may have been missing. This was right on. Well done Rajiv. I hate hate hate to overpack. I take a laundry bar, a shampoo bar and keep the junk to a bare minimum. I wear hiking boots and heavier stuff on the plane and wear thin layers out in the world. I also take a micro fibre towel for multiple uses. A carry on is plenty big enough. ❤

I love my TUMI bag. I bought accesories that clip in to handle all wires and bits, and always put the same type of things in the same pockets. I love taking my bag out now as it feels organised, which means less stress.

I've just done a road trip from Perth, WA to Brisbane, Qld to stay with my Mum for two months. Carry on luggage for my clothes and the only thing I did different was fold everything Mari Kondo style in the bag. It is so much easier to pick out my outfit each day without having to unpack layers. I did also take a suitcase for my craft stuff but - you know - priorities and I had a whole car worth of space to myself!

I would literally watch this wonderful man do anything. He is such a source of light. I am an expert traveler myself but, as usual, I still learned from his thoughtful approach. I am also a Tumi fan. I travel for work a lot and Tumi is by far the best luggage I have ever used. When I travel with my Tumi backpack, it’s like traveling with a faithful companion. You are absolutely right about the zippers and wheels. I have had mine for over 10 years and my suitcase almost looks like the day I got it. When I travel overseas, I take the Just In Case and always wash my laundry in the hotel sink. I also found a portable washing bag with little nibs for washing my clothes. It folds up into literally nothing and is wonderful for hotel laundry. I wish we could get back to the days where you dressed for your air travel. I still dress up every time I fly. It makes sense when packing my suit, but it’s also fun.

I love that you reminded me to PACK LIGHT just before my trip to Italy/Switzerland! It’s so easy to get carried away with the wardrobe ideas that I forget I have to drag it around town with me! The “Just in Case” is brilliant and Tumi is one of the best luggage makers out there. BTW I adore the fabric of your swimsuit! I wound love a shirt in it….any hints as to where it is made? Why doesn’t he also buy laundry detergent same as he recommends with shampoo (unless it’s a special detergent) 2. For me personally carrying such model of a bag would be heavy. I prefer a backpack. Great tips. Unfotunately the "wear it on the plane" tip only really works if you're staying in one place for your entire trip (as I've learned the hard way) - otherwise, you end up wearing that suit on every bus/train/car trip because it doesn't fit in your luggage. Same issue with the "buy it when you're there" tip, unless you're going to buy things multiple times.

Good advice for packing. I am an over packer. Just went on two week trip and packed way to much. Luckily it was a car trip so I wasn't having to lug luggage around. Got to say Tumi luggage is way beyond what I can afford, but your packing ideas were worth the watch.
