“I lost a couple pairs of panties…” hysterical! I lived in Greece and I can related. I didn’t realize the little old ladies in the village were counting all the pairs of panties I had on my washing line. Your backing is an inspiration to me. I keep packing less and less every trip and I’m still amazed at how many items I don’t wear. Enjoy your trip and safe travels!

OMG I laughed when you described the noisy luggage rumbling across the cobblestones in Florence. Brought back memories of doing just that many years ago when I was there with 2 girlfriends and we had to drag our bags from where we were dropped by the cab to our apt in a "pedestrian only" area. Down right embarrassing. Wish I had packed lighter - LOL. Love Italy . Have a fabulous trip Rajiv.

You didn't intend to make an old lady smile. My freshman year at university I was required to take public speaking - for painfully shy me it was my most uncomfortable, detested, abhorrent class of all time, but the last speech of the semester I gave a demonstration speech on how to pack a suitcase because I was so ready to be "outta there"! Thanks for the smile. I hope you have a delightful visit in Florence and learn more than you even expected.

When I traveled for work, I always wore a suit and a pair of low heeled, professional-but-comfortable shoes on the plane. Clothing all worked with black. Lots of scarves to vary the outfits. They take up almost no space. Toiletries case was always packed and ready to go to reduce worry about forgetting something essential. I could get 2 weeks worth of clothes into a duffle that fit under the seat. It makes travel so much less stressful.

A friend once said to me, as I was packing to spend some time wandering in Scotland, real travellers pack space.. It took quite some time to figure out what he meant, but I was doing it unconsciously.. A small bag, with another small bag inside to carry home whatever loot had been discovered.. Was just smiling thinking of my friend from long ago, as Rajiv put his 'extra' bag neatly folded into the duffel.. prepared for the inevitable.. ☺

Just a natural flow of talking, peppered with humour, advice, and song. I always learn something from you and your hobbies and passions are inspiring. One thing I would like to share with you, is send yourself a postcard - actually if time allows it then try sending postcards to your friends and family but definitely the first one should be to yourself. Perfect Timing as I will be packing tomorrow for an Art Trek to Provence in 2 days! Your light packing reminds me of the first time I went to Europe in the early 70's when Europe was truly $5 a day and the pound to the dollar was 5 to1! Then I only took one of those small fight bags that the travel agents would give you for free. I do want to pack light and now I have been further inspired by your video. BTW: Growing up that is the kind of clothes line my mother used. Also, I can relate to your closet. I am native New Yorker, now living on Cape Cod... who lived in many apts with high ceilings and high closets that always needed stepstools to get things out. 🎨Have a wonderful trip and looking forward to your Florence videos.

For anyone else who's in the carry on only club- shampoo and conditioner bars (versus liquid shampoo) are game changing, and muji sells these stackable containers where I can decant no joke- 3 weeks worth of a beauty routine and it takes up the space of two bic lighters. My other big space saver is uniqlo airism undershirts that things like button ups can be layered under. I can take literally 15 of them and they take up no room- which reduces the need to do laundry. He's right about shoes though- my forever moving target.

I would love to see Rajiv do an autumn/winter version of this! I'm packing for a trip and it's so much easier to pack light when you're going to a warm climate... so much harder when the seasons are in transition (needing more diversity/layering options because of widely fluctuating temperatures) and cold climates (two sweaters seem to take up my whole carry-on!).

Fantastic tips! I do roughly the same thing now - over the years I went from taking a full size case + carryon for a week, and managed to pare it down to a rolling carry on for a 4 week trip. The comfort and simplicity with this approach is incredibly stress reducing! I use a "capsule" concept with my choice of clothes to ensure everything can be combined in different ways, which allows me to avoid repeating the same outfits too frequently. 7 pair of underpants, 3 pair of (wool) socks + 1 pair of thick socks that I can use as slippers, and yes, I just hand wash any of it as needed. I also bring my favorite leather backpack that doubles as a purse, into which I'll throw my travel docs, snacks, e-reader, phone, charger, reading glasses, a very minimal set of toiletries, prescriptions, a few tablets of ibuprofen just in case, and *very important*: a socket adapter (if needed) I also bring a lightweight duffel to bring back my shopping booty too - this might be the most important part! You nailed all of it - I love this!

Packing light is an art! I was very proud this summer because I successfully packed for 10 days in Addis Ababa (average 55 - 70 degrees F and rainy) followed by 5 days in Rome (average 75 - 90 and sunny) in the same carry-on backpack, plus a canvas shoulder bag similar to yours.
