I wonder what tragedy befell the Liu Kang of Invasions Season 8. Countless things could have happened, but one possibility is that this Liu Kang never relinquished his power over time to Geras, resulting in him becoming little different from Kronika in trying to micromanage his timeline. This alternate Liu Kang would invade because either his timeline is in ruins or he is envious of the idea that another Liu Kang is doing better than he is. The bosses of Invasions Season 8 would basically be Kombatants who have devoted themselves to Liu Kang's service in exchange for a change in their personal histories, again reflecting what Kronika did.
