Hi Steve, thanks for the nice comments, and welcome to the channel. Good choice of bikes there mate 👍 I’ve got a couple of resto’s on the go at the minute - a Mk1 Mini and a Mk1 Extra Burner. It’s a good time to buy at the minute; prices are always depressed over the winter, and particularly in January. My advice is to try and find one that still has most of its original parts, or it can start to get expensive. There are plenty of ratty ones kicking about normally. I love the whole restoration process - it’s my winter hobby. Good luck with it, I’m sure you’ll find the perfect project if you’re patient. Thanks Neil

Neil, can I ask you a daft question about rivets?! You mentioned drilling through the rivets on the chainwheel guard, what size/type did you replace them with when you put it back together? Aluminium/stainless steel and were they just ones to fit the hole or a specific size? Great vids. Really enjoyed them, thank you.
@chasetherainbow
@chasetherainbow 5 күн бұрын
@@simonjarratt it’s not a daft question, and you’re more than welcome. The rivets are aluminium and are 4.8mm (3/16”) Cheers Neil

Hi Giles, thanks for commenting. For the seat tube I use a 25mm Flap Wheel (for a 22.2 seat tube - I use a 30mm wheel for 28.8 seat tubes). It’s extended with a length of steel hydraulic tube so that I can get right down. For headtubes I use one about 38-40mm. All are 120 grit, which does the job perfectly without being too abrasive. For bottom brackets I use a 50mm wire wheel. They are all commonly available from places like Screwfix and Toolstation, and are quite cheap. It’s a nifty trick that makes cleaning them really easy. I might do a little video show and tell, it’s something I’ve been asked about a few times. I hope that helps 👍

I’m like you and enjoy sourcing/looking for parts. I understand cost is always a factor but what about doing a Raleigh tribute build 🤔 the ultimate custom, you might even get subscribers donating OG parts 😆.. anyhoo keep doing what you’re doing, it’s always a pleasure to watch. All the best Neil 👊🏼

Great resto, love your bmx content, just a question, what did you use to clean up the simplex mags?
@chasetherainbow
@chasetherainbow Жыл бұрын
Hi Wayne, thanks for commenting 👍 I’m glad you like the videos. They were actually in pretty good condition. I degrease them and then wash them in hot soapy water to remove any grime. To remove brake rub I use Elbow Grease Magic Eraser, they are widely available. The get rid of any general staining or discolouration I use Wet & Dry sanding sheets and go through the grades, starting at around maximum 400 and down to 2000 generally. I then give them a good dousing with WD40, leave it for a day and then polish off. For the metalwork I usually find that wire wool followed by Autosol Metal Polish is normally sufficient. A Dremel helps to speed things up. Hope this helps you out mate. Cheers Neil

I really don't like the welding on the cheaper Raleigh bikes, it looks unfinished compared to the Aero Pro
@chasetherainbow
@chasetherainbow Жыл бұрын
The standard Raleigh factory frames were very agricultural 😂 Good solid street bikes, but they don’t compare to the Japanese Tange and Koizumi built Aero Pro and Cromo Burner’s - they were a different breed.

Can I ask how you refit the chainring guard. Do you have a rivet device or use bolts.? Thanks.
@chasetherainbow
@chasetherainbow Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question. I use a hand riveter, with 4.7mm rivets. The concertina type ones are the best for home use, but even the cheap “squeeze” type ones that you can buy on the High Street are fine for occasional use.
