Hi Rick Great video i have made 2 of the hand pieces one out of stainless and the other out of brass i like the brass don't know why i found that a steel piston is to hard hitting and the hand piece just runs away so i made one out of aluminum better but still didn't give me the control i wanted then i made a piston out of delrin played around with the weight by adding different screws to it finally got the control in most materials a little slow in steel but i do have control
@ralex3977 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dennis, glad you liked the videos! The weight of the piston is just one of the variables in getting the hand piece to run the way you like it, its a balancing act between the speed of the compressor, foot pedal, piston weight, spring or no spring and how the graver is sharpened. For such a simple machine there is a lot going on.

@ralex397 Жыл бұрын
The tire inflator must be modified, after mod it pushes and pulls/sucks and blows the same air back and forth. The spring goes behind the piston in the hand-piece. I offer free blueprints and drawing that explain how it works. If you would like them email me at ralex397@hotmail.com.

Hey Rick, I’m just starting my engraving journey, l have followed your series and now have setup that makes all the correct noises and things so it should work once it has been setup, my question is how long does the graver need to protrude from the end of the collet, if this is a matter of personal choice what would be a good starting measurement, thanks for the video series, it was easy to follow and everything at my end went well, once again a massive thank you. Steve,
@ralex3972 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, the GRS C Max gravers come pre shaped at just under 2 inches long, thats the length I use. Over time and sharpening it will get shorter but that will take a while. If you are making your own gravers out of HSS 2 inches is a good starting point.

Is this normal? Thanks!

Great video so much good, useful, and accurate information that honestly isn’t anywhere else on KZbin. There are some good videos out there but nothing that goes as in depth and detailed as yours fine sir. For that I say thank you. I do have one question about the handpiece that may be a dumb question but being a noob to this I figured I’d ask anyway. So in the handpiece, does the piston in the cylinder actually make contact with the quick change holder and it most extended point in travel, or is it only making contact with the shoulder on the inside of the handpiece created by the 2 different size bores created with the different size cavity’s created by using 2 different drill bits and reamers used to bore out the cylinder from their perspective ends?
@ralex3973 жыл бұрын
The piston hits the back of the quick change tool holder, transferring the energy to the graver. Some hand pieces have a set screw to lock the tool holder into the hand piece, but I think you lose energy when the tool holder is locked in. Glad you enjoyed the videos!

Thanks for the plans Rick they look amazing. I am gearing up to make the graver and buy a foot pedal. But I am confused about the compressor I would need to run this... If I understand it correctly some engravers run on positive pressure using a normal air compressor, and some run on negative air pressure where the compressor needs to cycle the same air back and forth. Which type does this graver use? Can I make it work with my "workshop size" air compressor?
@ralex3975 жыл бұрын
You must modify a small 12 volt compressor / tire inflator for this hand piece to work, it will not run on regular compressed air or pulse type engraving systems. After the compressor is modified it sucks and blows the same air back and forth, as the piston in the compressor goes up it pressurizes and pushes the piston in the hand piece against the tool holder, when the piston goes down it sucks the piston in the HP to the rear and the cycle starts over again. The speed controller slows the compressor down to usable speeds.

Thanks Rick, I really appreciate the advice. Cheers.

Hi Rick, thanks for sharing this video and design. I engrave copper, steel and wood plates for intaglio printmaking. I use hand gravers but due to health issues my joints cannot take pushing a graver thru steel or boxwood for long, limiting my work ability. I looked at Lindsey and GRS air engravers about 10 years ago and concluded I could not afford to purchase them. I did not see any plans back then either. You have inspired me to make my own. I did not think it would be so easy... I have a metal lathe and mill. The only info I still need is the size of o-ring for the quick change tool holder. What size do you use on yours?
@ralex3973 жыл бұрын
I no longer make my own quick change tool holders, I find it easer to buy GRS QC holders from eBay. But when I did make them I used a 1/8 x 1/4 x 1/16 O'ring.

Hello Rick! I manufactured a handpiece but the piston is moving to the front and doesn’t oscillate. The dimensions, position of the 4 holes are acording to your description. The play between the cylinder and piston is also what you mentioned: about 0.08 mm in diameter. What I do wrong.
@ralex3976 жыл бұрын
If the piston covers up the vent holes it will stop.....make sure thats not happening..If it is put a small taper, radius or chamfer at the end of the piston so it wont block the vent holes. If that is not the problem make sure the intake valve on the piston of the compressor has been sealed shut. Hope that helps.
@pavelliszka6 жыл бұрын
Rick Alexander Thanks! The quick change piece ends exactly at the midle of the vent holes, the piston ends in a round shape. So, the vent holes never will be closed by the piston. I’m using an industrial compressor, adjusted between 20 and 40 psi. What is not understsndable for me: the pressure move the piston forward till will be in contact to the end of the quick change piece. What should make the piston to start to move backward and oscillate?
@ralex3976 жыл бұрын
You must modify a compressor to move the air in the cylinder back and forth, block the intake valve and open up the out valve going to the hand piece. As the piston goes up it compresses the air forcing the piston in the hand piece to strike the QC tool holder, when the piston in the compressor goes down it causes a suction and the piston in the hand piece is pulled back. It will not work with an unmodified compressor.
@pavelliszka6 жыл бұрын
Rick Alexander Many thanks! Now I got it! Is logical! This kind of handpiece will not work with a standard compressed air! Thanks again!

Thats funny but thats what happened, brain fart. I buy an assortment box that has 100 or more assorted springs, I use the thin springs that are compressed together a pull type spring, I pull them apart until they stretch out just a little then cut out the length I need. They make the best "soft" spring. Making your own is probably the best way.

As I stated before its important when u make handles not to make too deep and creating empty useless space that will created volume for compressor to fill and causing loss of power just like having too long a hose
