The APKWS don't spin - that is correctly modelled in DCS. The laser sensors on the ends of the 4 new fins could otherwise not exactly track the laser spot. The rockets actually have to be actively "un-spin-ed" by the guidance systems after they are launched (as they start spining like any other 2.75" rocket by default).
@mostevil10824 жыл бұрын
The paper I found (RD-SS-90-6) says hydra spin is from the rocket nozzles flutes for launch stablisation, there's a tiny shaped leading edge on the rear fins cancel out and then reverses the spin once the rocket has burned out. As it transitons subsonic the trailing edge takes over and maintains a slower spin to keep the warhead happy. BAE's images seem to show the standard rear fins with those shaped edges (they're pretty subtle). The popout fins on the APKWS module do seem to cancel out any spin after launch so the fin optics can track without a 20-30Hz spin fecking with everything. So it seems to be modeling the trailing edge spining it back up at the end when the seaker goes to sleep. It's a very cool system stuck into the middle of some very dizzy, most probably drunk rockets. :D

I love the fact that we get an option for cockpit wear. I prefer the look of a worn cockpit, as it at least to me gives the cockpit some sense of 'soul' and character. This in itself increases my immersion. When learning, however, the worn cockpit tends to get in the way. Heatblurs F-14B is probably the best example here for me, as it's the aircraft that to me has the most soul and wear to its cockpit, but I also remember fighting the cockpit rather than the enemy when learning to use this aircraft. I had a hard time finding the switches quickly, as the text/label of many important buttons was scratched in a way that made them harder to read. They did fix some readability issues with the F-14, but I still believe that they took the weathering a bit too far in some regions, making it harder to read. The wear of the A-10C II seems far more subtle than what the F-14 released with, but I still think I'll use the factory new one until I'm a tad more comfortable with the layout of the switches. I also believe that the factory new one would be easier to read while in VR, but I have not tried this.

@@nyandyn I completely agree with you, especially now that I've spent some more time in it and looked around more properly. There still are some switches down towards the bottom left where the text is scratched and where the contrast levels are lower, thus making slightly it easier to quickly read at a glance with the factory new one - but in general, even the weathered one is very much readable. I think they really hit the sweet spot for wethering levels with that one.

According to the Raytheon video on KZbin the guidance fins kill the spin of the APKWS as soon as they deploy. I’m guessing they’ve modeled it in the game for those fins to lose control when the seeker battery dies and the rear fins start spinning the rocket again since the guidance fins have no power and they are free floating.

This is just me speculating wildly so there's a good chance I'm completely off base, but regarding the spinning... If the APKWS still uses the same rocket motor as the unguided Hydra variants (which seems likely since the whole point of this thing was to field a precision guided weapon for minimal expense), I'm betting the rocket motor's folding fins are set up to induce a roll to stabilize the rocket. If it needs to not roll while guiding on a target, the maneuvering fins would have to actively work to cancel out that rolling tendency. If they have a limited battery life like you suggested, it could be that the servos driving the fins go limp when the battery dies and allow the rocket to start rolling.
@CakePrincessCelestia4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4G7mWOJpbaIbNkm05s The thing comes out spinning, just like the unguided one and then derolls so the sensors can pick up the laser spot. And when it starts spinning again, that battery probably just runs out of juice.

I don’t know for certain, but I think the apkws spin behaviour is because of its battery. Normally those rockets are spin stabilised but since they are guided they don’t need that. Think those fins at the end normally give it the spin and the guidance fins on front counter it but when the battery dies that falls away and it spins. If someone knows for sure I’d be interested in knowing!

In relation to the 2.75" rockets with the APKWS. They are not very big rockets. Typically we used HAO7 NALC rockets which are 2.75" in diameter and about 41" in length. Not all of that length holds the solid propellant. Unlike a missile which has a huge motor section, the 2.75" rocket does not. Additionally, it does not spin much, otherwise, the tiny fins on the APKWS would not be able to control its flight pattern. I will spin just enough to arm the warhead. I can speak on this because I am a retired Marine Corps Aviation Ordnancemen and I wrote a good portion of the publication for the APKWS. Great video though. If the rocket was spinning from launch it wouldn’t be able to adjust its flight. Imagine trying to control a plane which was spinning. You pull the stick back to climb but it’s spinning so you’ll only climb in a small potion of that spin. When you’re inverted in that spin you’ll be actually pulling down. Secondly if I remember correctly, some ordinance uses gas to control its fins for flight. Once this gas runs out there’s no control. Maybe that’s why it was spinning at the end of its flight?

@timmy38223 жыл бұрын
I get where you're coming from, but we've gotten quite a few new systems with this update to the module. Then there's an entirely new interior and exterior model. That's a fair bit of work behind the scenes, if you already own the module it's dirt cheap and really I think a valid asking price. This is especially true when you look at an awful lot of games now, who's DLC or things like "premium vehicles" can cost upwards of a full DCS module and only have an absolute fraction of the depth. We also get the engine updates for free, like the 2.7 update which has much more than just the new clouds. So again, I get where you're coming from, DCS is an expesnive hobby but in terms of value for money I think it's a steal when you compare it to the £60 "AAA" games that are just annual releases of the same crap, stuffed full of "microtransactions" and a new number on the cover (looking at you FIFA).

Whats most likely happening with the rockets is the armor is too thick or getting absorbed by the ERA on the majority of the tank. And when the three hit on the back and did no damage what most likely happened was the extra fuel drums probably ate the rockets, idk if its simulated in DCS but fuel is very good at eating projectiles and warheads, as well as the "spaced armor" the fuel tanks being empty would create would significantly impact HEAT warhead performance.
@OliverMiles984 жыл бұрын

M282 warhead is MPP - MultiPurpose Penetrator. Its some sort of semi-piercing projectile with HE and incendiary as a bonus. SAPHEI, maybe SAPHEFI, definitely not HEAT. Haven't found exact penetration values, but this thing probably won't pen back/side turret of T-72, maybe turret roof at right anlge or engine deck. If fuel tanks are modeled, i can easily see them being able to trigger the fuse before rocket gets inside the engine compartment. And yes, ERA will definitely eat them for breakfast without any issue.

On the other hand i don't think that HE would do. From what i recall HEAT warheads for those 70mm FFAR were somehow broken in DCS, remember testing them some time ago and they were not likely to kill a tank from the side or even from the rear. The aged pit isn't aged enough for me. Needs about 20 more years added to it

Just getting into DCS. Can you recommend a solid joystick and base? Thrustmaster warthog and above price range. Is it possible to use joystick axis for rudder or is that no advised? Love the F14 and P-51 and WW2 planes in iL2 Sturmovik. What are you using? Will likely get this plane. Looks stunning.

Does anyone know if A-10C II will always be $10 for people who have previously owned the A-10C, or just for a limited time Thank you

Еще со времен Flaming Cliffs не летаю, но подписан на всю хуйню, связанную с Eagle Dynamics и DCS ) Впитываю так, как будто мне это пригодится. Like, as always. And yeah, aged cockpit is better.

Are the A-10C campaigns compatible with the new A-10C II?

APKWS is not supposed to turn, the fins deploy and de-rolls the rocket so it can achieve guidance. showed in this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4G7mWOJpbaIbNk
