Ralfi's Alley - Mig-29S Fulcrum Love

I hopped in the Open Conflict Server and flew the Mig-29S for a change. Managed to fly two sorties without dying once which is pretty neat. This is the first sortie and the one with the most kills, but the very first scene was from my second sortie, where a bf-109 just happen to be flying around the battlefield. Why? I have no clue...
I left this mainly unedited, though I cut out three empty bits where nothing was happening. Included here are also subtitles where I explain some things here and there. A lot of people seem to like that quite a bit so I figured that might be better than me talking over it.

Very well said. I worked A-10's' F-4's and F-16's from A to D and too many blocks to count. And I only had to know two systems. I enjoy DCS and marvel at your skill not only to fly but the systems as well. I can fly anything, but to use it as it was intended is another story. Thanks Ralfi, from an old retired AF vet.

I am usually very sucessful using the mig when fighting the Blue side. That is because the F-15s dont expect the enemy (mostly su-27) to have fire and forget radar guided missiles, so they usually just turn towards me when i fire the r-77 and fly right into their death :D

My favorite plane to fly in DCS. Su-27 radar and missiles is nice, but it just doesn't accelerate and climb like I feel a 4th gen fighter should. MiG-29's thrust to weight is just insanity. I remember Ralfi dude saying the MiG-29 was the most broken plane in the game and was very cheap though...:)

It is. It has the lowest flight mechanics of any other DCS aircraft (though they are working on that) and it has a borked damage model. It's nearly impossible to kill a 29 with a single short range heater. 9/10 of my engagements against a 29 resulted in 2 or more missiles being required to kill it, and an insane amount of guns. And it used to be FAR worse in the past too. This thing TANKS rounds, and it's not a feature.

ralfidude I fly the Fulcrum exclusively and I have to say that's BS. it used to be this way. You could almost always tank one missile. This does not happen anymore. It was fixed around the same time the S model was updated. Do some testing, you'll see that it doesn't tank them anymore. I fly it almost everyday so I'd know. I hated that it used to do that because people would say I was flying some cheap OP broken plane, but it's fixed now and you're still claiming this.

I can't find something similar and the RWR sounds in that drive me nuts. I've found a lot of people end up just ignoring it, turning it off, or turning it down so far it's useless which just gets you killed.

Go for the TM Hotas Warthog. Little more than your looking to spend but you'll thank me later. Also you really are not going to do the choppers without either peddles or a stick with a twisting yaw axis, the TM Warthog does NOT have twisting yaw axis. Spend the money, the stick, throttle, and peddles will last a long time with maintenance and easy use.

Unrelated ralfidude, but DCS 2.0 and 1.5 I get a slight pull on the ground to the right. It only happens in the A10 and in singleplayer. Rudder axis alignment is good and tried different load outs for asymmetric loads and it's always slight pull to the right. Happens only on the ground including with steering enabled/disabled. Any thoughts?

I fly both. VR is great for ground pounding and BFM but u need a HD rig and not the DK2 I fly with. yeah Ive won some fights in VR but its a damn hassle not to mention the price tag when its all said and done. U cant beat TrackIR or the free but very shitty face tracking solutions available.

I don't know how it would compare to a real MiG-29, but it's largest handicap (in my experience) was it's annoyingly poor range. Every time I use it it seems that I'm fighting with one eye on the fuel gauge.

Vanilla. Dots appear more when not zoomed in, they disappear when zoomed fully in.

2D sprites are rendered smaller at higher resolutions in DCS. There's a mod to fix that, but not allowed on most MP servers sadly. forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=160634 Best resolution for visibility in vanilla DCS is 720p or lower actually.

Those 2d sprites have been broken (or removed) since 1.5.4. We are on 1.5.6 Update 1. So about 6 months. Now it is just a single pixel at long range. Although I have seen that single pixel when against a clear sky up to about 150Km away... Basically visibility in DCS is fucked. Odd since even IL-2 CloD, BoX and even Falcon 4 get it good enough.

How do you find the time to learn each aircraft? In real life it takes months to learn switchology let alone system capabilities then add aircraft performance, real fighter jocks take months to transition to another weapon system and even then more training to become truly combat ready. With the pilot shortage you should have no problem realizing your dream that I recall reading in your profile a few years back. And a plus is you have the attitude! Might want to check into it with you USAF recruiter.

This is a simulator that does a decent job but we as players don't have to go through every little detail that they do in real life. It would be essentially impolite to even suggest it's remotely close to being the same. That said, I learn slowly because it's my passion. When you find something fun it's not hard work, it's just a really great past time. So have fun with it!

When you are in EO and hook someone up, if you flash your radar on, shouldn't the other person get a lock tone on their RWR? You radar isn't in search mode is it? Because if simply turning the radar on is enough to fire 27ERs or 77s, it means the radar has to be in track mode, but yet apparently if you just turn the radar (for identifying friend/foe for example) while already tracking a target in EO mode, the other plane doesn't get a lock tone, they just get a spike on the RWR.

Remember that spike and nails are different. EO to find someone and track until launch. When you fire, the radar turns on I believe. But when I'm in EO and I quickly flash my radar on and off to IFF, they don't get any spikes because it happens too quickly.

You very quickly turn your radar on and then off again and see in the bottom left corner of the HUD if the IFF returns a friend or foe signal. When you do it that fast they never even get the radar spike.

You can do more in the 21 but she's hard. If this is your first DCS module then F5 is easiest to get into. Very basic but still fun. But the 21 can also be very fun, it's just very difficult to manage everything for a new DCS player, or a player that has only flown Flaming Cliffs aircraft.

keep in mind you cant buy the stand alone luke the F5, eagle, and 27. u gotta buy the FC3 module. comes with a few nice if a little out dated jets. I think the F% has autotrim like the eagle whereas the ruskies fly STIM meaning you are always having to trim the damn jets instead of focusing on the fight. Like ralph said, if ur ok-ace try it out. if you are just starting, go F5. unless its STIM too. I think the MIG has datalink like the 27 too but again I could be wrong. oh yea, the 29 burns dirty so unless your lucky you will get spotted quick if not BVR

Gotta agree with lazyboot here; if you're cropping for aesthetics (and it does look nice that way), surely it's hardly any hassle at all to actually crop off the video rather than just hardcoding bars? The visual effect on a 16:9 display would be indistinguishable, and those of us with ultrawides get a nice bonus experience.

I like MiG-29 also, but it's avionics works in completely different way in real life. Real MiG-29 is an interceptor connected to ground control stations and dependant on them. It's not an independent hunter-killer. MiG-29 in DCS in very simplified so i wait for an advanced avionics and flight model for this beautiful aircraft.

The problem is that the migs radar sucks and therefore the lock often does not work. Pressing alt w wont make your missile track. But overall the r-77 is a really good missile. Its like the 120 but with a bit less range and better maneuverability

I know but this is an FC3 model that can take a lot of abuse and won't overreact like a DCS level aircraft will. Plus I didn't want to waste too much time since I only have so much to spare to make a video.

Most of us Westerners have a general idea of how a Western HUD is laid out and what means what but have no idea what the hell we're looking at with Russian designs. Is there a video that does a quick run down on the Russian layout or can you do a quick explanation for us viewers one day?

Sound files for FC3 aircraft make it difficult to distinguish between each aircraft, some sound files are shared between West and East planes. Nothing I can do about that.

SPO-15 cannot distinguish between aircraft types in reality. It has same sound for all. Some western RWR have function called synthetic audio which makes different sound for every radar (in such case sound basically represents the emmission of the radar) but it is not a case for SPO-15. SPO-15 is very basic RWR. IIRC DCS default sounds for SPO-15 are more realistic. Those sounds sound like mod that takes sounds from western aircraft RWR and puts them into SPO-15.

macieksoft No you misunderstand. The DCS sound files for RWR returns are shared among Western and Eastern aircraft for things like the "pull up" sound file you mentioned at first and what not. I did change the sounds for the Eastern and Western block to separate them as much as possible aside for the ones that are shared between the two and there is nothing I can do about that.

The zoom thing is totally unrealistic. In real life you can stick your nose to the canopy and you won’t see any farther. Entertaining though.

It's a fucking game, of course there are unrealistic parts to it. Limitations of the details available by the best monitor screens of our time still cannot compare to the detail of the human eye. You compensate for things like that. That and I try to make things more entertaining for the viewers so they can actually see what I'm seeing.

They aren't. The Mig-29 has not proven itself in battle much at all. But you really don't want to be in a close in fight with a Fulcrum. That's where the bird shines the most.

veiga devil back in the days it had dogfight capabilities that the western planes just didn't have. Capable high off boresight launches happened only like 12 years later for western aircraft. Anywhere outside short range and the pilot is 80% fucked though. As you noticed, all the analog stuff puts a huge work load on the pilot, time that an F-15 would easily take to btfo the 29.

ralfidude I thought it wasn't intended to be absolutely advanced and fight on par with f-15s. It was meant to be cheap alternative to su27 and to cover advancing troops on short ranges from rought airfields. So its ruggednes comes not only from Soviet Union lagging behind US (which it did). In some aspects it was intended to be like that. Workload and instrumentation could be attributed to time saving for transition from mig23s and overall retardation of human ingeneering in ussr. Isn't it?

DroehnIng the cockpit does tell you a lot though. You can find first hand experience of an F-16, F-15 and MiG-29 pilot going through how inferior the plane is and how like 80% of it comes from the horrible cockpit.
