Staycation is excellent as long as you have a home that is reasonably comfortable. I think it is more important to live in a comfortable home/place than to spend the money on holidays or, for example, going out to bars (or whatever you prefer) every weekend. Here in Scandinavia, it is very common to also have a cabin and cabin life has probably never been more popular than now during the pandemic. With a fireplace "hygge" and the easy chair or sofa, you are well prepared for a good whisky :)

Adding water has definitely made whisky a lot more interesting for me. And that's down to you Ralfy, so thank you for that. I tell everyone to play with water in their whisky now, and it's amazing how many people seem to agree but never do. Even "professionals" - e.g. shop owners.

A wonderful malt, Ralfy. And after such a year as this one, you've got every right to splurge at Christmas time. I still have the Arran 21 yo that was released a couple of years back - bearing the old livery (which I actually prefer). It's a superb dram, showing just how well the Arran distillate combines with, and complements a subtle maturation in ex-bourbon with a few 2nd-fill Sherry casks thrown into the mix. The distillery character is still there; it's not intimidated and not overwhelmed. I really am surprised at just how well Arran spirit ages (with the right cask maturation). It's definitely got the backbone to go the long haul. And from your glowing review, the new bottling sounds just as good, if not better! Many thanks for all your great advice and the many insights you've offered throughout the year. You're definitely right - it's a lot more fun getting a decent whisky for Christmas than a pair of mangy socks. Here's wishing you a grand Christmas - despite everything that's happening. Cheers!

A real nice review of this Arran 21, which I haven't tried yet (due to the price) but is certainly is on my wishlist. As for giving ourselves a treat you are absolutely right - I opened up a long anticipated bottle of Tamdhu 15 and it does not disappoint (90/100)!

Freshly opened and from a cold bottle this Arran 21 seemed disappointing at first to me on Christmas day, but warmed up to body temperature over several hours it really opened up a Pandora's box of sweet spice and new flavours. Given plenty of time and warmth, it turns into something special. The balance shifts from an Arran 10ish sweet fruit up front and a savoury/spice in the background, to the oak-spice taking over with the Arran's typical fruity profile relegated a bit to the background. Just the right balance for sweet/savoury/spice lovers. Cheers ralfy, perfectly accurate review. A 'complicated' whisky. Lovely stuff.

Your comment about Arran using wet casks (using casks quickly and not reconstructed) is spot on. This is the way it should be. I feel so dirty when I see huge cooperages and Diagios plants (and many other locations) where they are reconstructing millions of barrels per year (from reused wood... from who knows where). I love this style of hands on work. Unless our governments get their hands on too much (favoring big business and all), this is the style of craftsmanship that will pay off in the long run. Cheers Malt Mates! I’m proud to be among such an easy going and open minded group of friends. I’m so glad to be a part!

Well, this may turn out to be an expensive 20 minutes of my time. Arran is one of my favorites, and I always try to have one on hand (usually the 10, but I also currently have the 14). I may have to splurge and buy this one if I can find it. As an aside, I've found that the Arran 10 blends really well with Kilchoman Machir Bay. That's a fun one to try if you feel like experimenting a bit.

Another great review, Ralfy! Love the way you get right to the bottom line "Why did you use so many casks... did the first ones not work"? (LOL, but TRUE). As a side note, don't be too downhearted at having to pay 120 pounds for your bottle... I just did some currency conversions, and based on that amount, we should only have to pay around $140 US for our bottles... So, why is it that I can't seem to find a bottle anywhere in the US for under $230??? Sounds like you have it pretty good across the pond (economy and weather notwithstanding). I hope you continue to delight us for years to come with your entertaining, informative reviews. Raising a glass to your health!

Arran has been one of the few rebranding successes IMHO. Some of their new NAS offerings are not so great though, for my taste. New bottle is nice. Great spirit as noted in the video. New 18 is delicious but the old one was great too. Emphasis on sherry now. Shame the 14 has gone. Ralfy's contribution to the collective knowledge base of whisky is priceless. Really appreciate it. It’s odd that depending on the country of origin / spirit type, that chill filtration is sometimes praised and with Scotch Whisky it is often a negative idea. Dickel (a Diagio brand) boasts that they chill filter their whisky (yes without the E) through charcoal to “mellow” the whisky and pull out harsh flavors. Some of these bottles have it printed in huge lettering CHILL-FILTERED. I don’t want anything stripped from my whisky... I don’t think... lol Does anyone have any input or more info on this??

Maybe I missed it, but I havn't noticed you crap on Aberlour for their offerings, most of which are %40 abv and chill filtering, even the 16 year. Even the 18 year is only %43 abv. If I have it by myself I almost feel guilty for partaking as it’s such fine stuff. Do you see anything wrong with abstaining from drinking it even if that means the bottle sits on a shelf for years, or should I just let go of that inhibition and enjoy whenever guilt free?

@therealnucleus274

Google would have told you easily, but as I'm already here: chill filtration is only needed for Whiskies on the lower ABV-end, as the purpose of the filtration is to prevent whisky from flocking when getting too cold. As alcohol serves as kind of a natural "anti-freeze", the filtration is not necessary. The threshold is somewhere around your 46%.

One thing I noticed straight away was the beautiful smell of the oak cask. Also the 6% extra alcoholic content I noticed I wasn't able to have more then 2 wee drames. The taste is difficult for me to differentiate maybe that comes with experience! Saying that there is no disputing the quality of this single malt whiskey!! It's shocking people having a wee dram and putting cola in it they should be ridiculed for it.

I really enjoy mead myself but generally only have it once in a while. I have considered reviewing some but know very little about it. Other than it’s good and high in ABV!!! Lol Cheers Glenn!

@@AmericanScotchDoctor high in abv, really? I've not had much but the couple of bottles i've had were around 10 % abv which is less than most wines. Tastes great though. Cheers!

@@salamisaver, with Abv... I guess I’m thinking in terms of beer... but it’s not beer huh??? It’s made with fruit... right? See... I’m not the American Mead Doctor!!! Lol Regardless, I like mead. I’ve seen a few meads around 12 - 14%... but ya... that’s a mid to low strength wine huh. Now I’m interested in mead 😝

@@AmericanScotchDoctor Mead is made from honey actually, but it is often infused with fruit. It's an interesting drink. It's probably the oldest alcoholic beverage in history but somehow it became unpopular. Worth looking out for imo

Adding wodka to a cola makes it taste unpleasant. Adding even a cheap blend to a cola makes it far more flavorful and complex - for a sweet cold fizzy spice drink. A tiny measure of any whisky makes me truly enjoy that cola

You mean that if 'batches' are not consistent colour it won't matter. Just what I thought. I never heard a mire lame excuse for added caramel colour. It not about batch consistency. It's slways been about trying to fool people about the influence of the cask. Honestly, if a whisky is not natural colour, why bother even considering it when rating/evaluating a whisky?

Why you seem "angry" this whole video, it's weird. Sounded like a 26 mins rant. Probably this time you had just enough of the lockdowns and stuff 😀 Good review as always, but I felt shouted at through the screen. 😀
