It is helpful to have a non-bias source of information with decades more experience than I to help understand the ways (good and bad) of the whiskey world. You are one of my trusted sources of info that helps bridge my lack of information and helps to make educated decisions. It’s a shame we are losing historic brands to marketing, but hopefully that will allow younger, more dedicated distilleries to take their place. Keep up the good fight!

I went from being an educated consumer to being a whisky nerdy within 12-18 months. I have 200+ bottles, buy from overseas to the US, run a whiskey TikTok, own a cask of Arran, and going to Scotland in the Fall. The best part is there is so much to learn. Recently, I have acquired some very good Cognacs from 1931 to 1990. One of them was given 93 pts by Serge at WF.

I was fortunate to get an Old Particular Talisker 10 year old (cask ref DL14410) in NZ and it brought back my faith in Talisker after being put off the official version for a number of years. More true to an original Talisker and not the flat note you got in your 12 year old.

Where I live there is shortage of official bottling not even speaking of independent stuff, however there is a specialist shop where i have seen Old Particular on the shelf. Can`t recall whiskys filled there, but as rule of thumb is it worth paying extra for Old Particular line? Not afraid to miss but hoping to catch something unexpected from seems to be known distillery. Still in my early days with independent bottlers to be frank.

I bought a bottle of the 8 year old special release from Diageo hoping it would be as good as the last version,only to find it to have an incredibly drying effect on the mouth. Coupled with a high saline undertone and not that much peat.I have left it to oxidise for months but it is still a really "challenging dram" even with a lot of water

check out a descriptive flavor wheel, to see the common broad spectrum of flavors that are possible, peruse independent reviews that are not fluff, buy some Glencairns or similar nosing glasses, develop your own sense of oily, silky, chewy, briny; try several whiskys from each Scottish region to find the ones that impact you. For something more interesting than Jack Daniels, try Wild Turkey rare breed bourbon or rare breed rye, Balcones peated or black label single malt, or a barrel pick 120 proof of Knob Creek . . . for a start.

I had one this year that was so odd. Started off intensely sweet and pineapple. A week later it was semi-sweet and spicy, no pineapple. A couple weeks later and it was bone dry and very spicy with dark oak notes. Very confusing how it literally changed every week for over three months.

This whole stupid malt whisky bubble right now just finally propelled me towards the IBs, since there is drastically fewer decent OBs. And I must say Ralfy - a Signatory Mortlach can be quite a ride, if one takes time with it. If what you say is accurate, we're in for some silly spectacle in the coming years. Maybe a certain distiller will finally release a NAS named "Odin's Wee" (and looks like Odin eats lots of carrots) Or another company releasing only NAS bottlings directly to the secondary market, bought only at auctions. But I mean seriously, could I come up with something more ridiculous than NFTs or a whole malt line dedicated to a TV show? Cocaine is a hell of a drug and apparently still fueling marketing dept. brainstorming sessions.

Hello Ralfy and all Mondial Medicinal Malt Managing Men (♂, ♀ and all other 🌈 variants), I started my journey into whisky (I like to call it an adventure) many decades ago when my girlfriend gave me a bottle of Single malt Speyside (Aberlour) as a present for my birthday. However, one question I never found an answer to is: I always thought "Single Malt" meant not blended, but how then is it possible that a "Single Malt" is a mix of whiskies from three separate casks ? Now, is there a video about this subject published on this channel ? Kind regards and 👍, φ
@geo52912 жыл бұрын
Single refers to the distillery: the product comes from 1 distillery. From there in, they can mix and match anything they produce. A Macallan 10 is a very popular malt - no way you can continue making it and have it available, if your don't use many casks. You would blend them, because the profile would be somewhere in the middle, as every cash is so unique. The more you blend, the less unique casks have an impact. Those that are too unique so not hey blended into the major/popular product. In essence, they blend the a profile. I don't know if ralfy ever made a video for this suicidal, but he mentions this often, in most videos.

Hello Ralfy, new subscriber here and love the videos I've watched so far. I am also new to the scotch scene. I would like to ask your opinion on something that I plan on doing over the next few months. I am going to start a scotch collection and I would like to get the best quality bottle (for under $100) from each of the 6 regions in Scotland (yes I know technically there are 5 official regions but I was told the Islands are their own thing). I live in the US and depending on the state some brands are hard to find as you probably know. I have watched several you tubers and everyone has different opinions and it just seems overwhelming. So instead of guessing and overthinking it, I thought I would come to the OG Malt Meister for help with my jumping off point. Thank you.

Hey mate, enjoy your experience, go your own pace, be fussy and don't worry if your own taste doesn't allign with what's popular on the interwebs ;) 2 cents from yours truly: Kilkerran 12 for some unapologetic coastal funk Glenfarclas 15 for dry sherry speyside style Glencadam 10 - fresh ex-bourbon bright, unpeated, but still substantial And of course Ledaig 10 to represent Islay :D since it's doing a better job at that than most Islay malts rn (and malted at Port Ellen anyway). But probably the best way - if you can get samples at a whisky-oriented bar or retailer > try before you buy.
Dang.. I wanted to be the first one to comment. Carry On Ralfy~!!!
