Whisky is the one thing I don’t need a journal or reminder for. Once I taste one, it’s locked in the memory. The taste and emotions really stick with you, like a time stamp. Another reason I like whisky.

I never thought of keeping a log. The way I worked it was if I tried something of value and quality, I immediately buy more from the same case. Then instead of opening one of those, I buy another off the shelf. As long as that value and quality holds up, I'm satisfied and I know that if it turns, I have more of the good ones in the stash.

Nothing worse than getting a bottle, opening it sometime later, finding you enjoy it so much that you want to buy more for the stash then learning it's no longer available at reasonable prices and then just rationing out the rest - the frustration can make it all bitter sweet (plus I note my original comment was deleted 😢).

Let me slightly improve your formula: S = Q \ P, where P is the price. So Satisfaction grows with the higher Quality and decreases via inflated Prices. Enjoyed your malt philosophy, as always. Cheers.

This is one of the top episodes. Your ‘no bullshit’ explanation style is the main reason I watch. These xtras are a great addition to the whisky reviews. I’m an American who likes everything from Aaran and Ardbeg to Wild Turkey and Willett. I’d like to see you do a couple of bourbon reviews. Cheers 🥃

Well said Ralfy. I'm sure it's true but hard to believe that bad batches would be deliberately released. Surely this would put off a first time consumer and annoy those who were used to the product, perhaps to the extent they just stopped buying it. Seems like a crazy approach to establishing/maintaining brand loyalty. I'll stick to Ardbeg 10, Ledaig 10 and all the other wonderful integrity malts so I know what I'm getting 😃

I started log on my laptop, then gave up on it as there were too many that I had to backtrack and start adding to the log and then every time I would need to go on to the computer to see my notes or look up something. I think I might start up again with just a notebook. It would be nice to keep the bottles in alphabetical order but that's hard on paper. I do need to get back on track and clean up my notes. So many new bottles to try and take notes on. Good stuff

I keep a Whisk(e)y Radar journal in MS Word. I appreciate that your reviews are so much more in depth than just a typical, "this tastes of lemons, cut grass and nutmeg" and delve into what what makes a good distillery, a quality whisky and an integrity bottling. It really has taught me a lot about how to recognize Q. I maximize V by researching multiple buying options, where I've found prices varying by up to 50% at times. With that, I've amassed a very nice S quotient. Cheers!

I have very light head with alkohol, it's really small quantity that already makes me tipsy. According to some psychological research I am less likely to become alkoholic. And I can say it's true. Actually during spring and summer I usually don't drink high proof alkohol. Thank you Ralfy to remind me how lucky I am that I can safely take this whisky journey!

Shouldn't it be S = C x Q Satisfaction = Cost x Quality One could argue that Quality is inherently part of Value. So the formula should disaggregrate those terms.

The topic of batch variation is interesting. My mind always goes back to the wine industry which is heavily focused on vintage (at least at the high end). Ignoring the snobbery around certain wines it is interesting how vintages can vary and be fun to explore. However, whiksy "in theory" should be fairly consistent since there is no grape quality to factor in, and climate variations should average out during long aging. I'm curious what the main contribution to batch variation is in whiskey, or if it is simply all down to the casks.

E=MC2, means that mass can be turned into energy. In lots of energy. In such large lots of energy that one can multiply said mass by the speed of light squared to work out how much energy. And the speed of light is so riduculously high that it takes most civilisations in this part of the galaxy the better part of eternity to work out that it has speed at all. You may think you have a fast car, but that is nothing compared to the speed of light. In fact, light can travel eight times atound tge globe before you have spent a second to consider a lie about capacity. To parafrase Douglas Adams. Malt Masses multiplied by the speed of light squared... Would that constitute a malt mention? Cheers Ralfy, keep it coming.

As a miniature collector it sickens me to see these blogger's and spirit journalists that get these special bottles in some nice packaging absolutely free to review and rate the whisky when there's people like myself that collect and would probably pay for these items to have in my collection.Some of these journos talk alot of crap anyway and still have the miniature as an example the Springbank 1919 as the most expensive mini,well it isn't ,and I messaged them and told them it's not,but it's still on some of their sites,that tells me their shit at their jobs. But they've obviously got in with these companies to get what they get,wether 50 year old Littlemill,or the newest I've seen is a 25-30 Bushmills in a wooden presentation box. Sometimes I see certain ones appearing at auction. Where they not meant to be reviewing them?? You do the right thing Ralfy,and don't except any of the guff.I try and not collect any distillery that does this,and especially the ones that don't answer my emails,and there's plenty that don't.

That’s why your one of the few I trust. Even if a reviewer receives free samples and discloses that information , I still disregard the review completely because I know it’s still partially BS. You know they want to be offered free samples on the next go around right.
@whompbiscuits8930
@whompbiscuits8930 Жыл бұрын
I don't really trust reviews from those who get hospitality bottles from distilleries, even if it's fully disclosed. Because there's always an expectation from the reviewer if said reviewer is to continue receiving free whiskies. And so many reviewers are all too easily bought off. For a reviewer to say their review is still honest despite always having their hand out for free bottles is basically gaslighting readers/viewers. And enough of these reviewers are deliberately cultivating relationships with distilleries so they can land a real job with them and not have to rely on YT for their income. That notebook of Ralfy's could easily go for $300 on eBay.

Malt LOG? Yeah, I have that. It's an *excel sheet* with 3 sections with rows & columns. The sheets are: what I've already drank, what I'm slowly sipping on now, and what have I hard-mothballed (shhhh Springbank 15🤭 in there). The columns are: Malt name, score, my own notes, tasting notes, etc. 🤣🤣🤷🏽‍♂

the difficulty of recieving free product is not the transparency . It's the reviewers are not fully forthright in their review in order to not ruffle feathers and make sure they are still getting preferential treatment and invited to conventions ,tastings and cask picks. A lot of these bourbon reviewers are super sly and present in half truths to make sure they don't come off as shills but at the same time appeal to manufacturers. I have exposed this years ago and thats mostly why I'm despised by the big bourbon channels. Sly hustlers and they all came at me with the same statement of where and when did I lie ? Never called anybody a lyer but a vague non forthright without an honest opinion is not really telling lies and they know it and that is why they will claim they are being called lyers. No, they are just sly hustlers in the whiskey review businiess of reviewing. The big bourbon channels are so guilty of this and it's common practice and then you have plausible deniability because it wasn't out right lies. I have exposed this big time but many don't care as long as the reviewer is an appeaser that seems like they are giving an honest opinion and complicit to a peers game. I exposed this a few years ago and the venom that was spewed at me was mighty because they were getting exposed and who would care if it weren't true. When you reveal peoples hustle they flip out. We are all friends as long as you are complicit is the motto and never pull back the curtain on Oz. Rum world has been a bit more refreshing and flat out honest than whisky world or the vipers of bourbon in the U.S. Too bad I'm not Traeger & Truck enough and ex military , redneck covered in tatoos and a shaved head and bloviate on bourbon with a rationalized drunken peer group to rationalize my alcohol abuse. That kind of sums up Merican bourbon D bags all over KZbin. Somebody with some since has to say it. Might as well be me uttering the facts. LOL !!!
