Ralfy your passion about living and appreciating life in its whole is unprecedented... I started watching your videos for the sake of understanding and tasting whisky better, but I have to say, pieces like these, where you rant about people not tasting life as they should, finding worth to the little things and how all that knowledge and experiences in journeying in the world of whisky translates to enjoying life a tad bit more, are my favourites. Cheers and thank you so much for sharing your enthusiasm and passion for quality, be it of whisky, people or even Life itself!

The wisest words on whisky ever spoken, I'm nearly 70 and have never tired of my long journey to discovering some great malts. Born in Edinburgh and brought up in Glasgow I've seen these characters with their Jaeger bombs. One thing I will add which really adds to my enjoyment of nice dram is I've collected a nice few 18th century silver drinking cups which I find marvellous to hold and drink from thinking on their history. It really makes it a pleasure and you don't have to break the bank to find one. I will add that I don't particularly like drinking from a quaich. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Rally this is something I’ve known about you for a while. I discovered your channel when I was 19. I turn 29 in a month. Currently my favorite whisky is a highland park 15 cask strength. Didn’t pay but $85 for it. You’ve taught me so much. Thank you. Bunnahabhain 11 cask strength manzanilla finish has challenged my palate too. Thank you for always being adamant about what good whisky is. You’re the bomb. 🤘🏻

Excellent, love it. Doing some simple online research and checking out the reviews naturally points me in the direction of decent whisky with minimal effort. Since getting past the uninformed supermarket phase and moving onto buying whisky online, I’ve never bought a poor quality bottle since. I often scan what’s available at online retailers and when something catches my eye I check out written and video reviews and quickly get a 👍 or a 👎. I’m slowly building up a relatively small collection of wonderful scotch single malts and haven’t got one I don’t love. Great perspective again Ralfy 👍👍👍

There are a few things I've learned from Ralfy, the most important in my opinion is to read the bottle, don't over stretch your budget, and not to pass up a whisky because I don't recognize the name or because the bottle isn't flashy. I've found some really tasty stuff although that Arran 10 is still quite elusive. Thank you Ralfy for helping me on my journey, keep up the good work.

Greeting Mr Ralfy and hope you are well, very informative and also funny listening to you talking about younger generation. I remember before covid I used to go to this rooftop bar a few nights a week taking a lot of people with me and after a while managers trying to be nice to me, every time I was getting there, they were greeting me with a glass of whisky mostly Chivas and asking me how do I like it. A few months on, I invited them to my place and boy, the look on their face when they saw my whisky collection was priceless. After that, the least they offered me at their bar was Lagavulin 16. I totally understand what you mean by perfume and kids and drinks. Take care and have a good afternoon.

There is some good advice here. Whisky is a journey - you can't just ask someone what to buy and go for it without thinking. It's good to try things and form your own opinion. For those who are new to whisky, it is a good idea to start with well-known, widely available, reasonably priced whiskies that are at a good quality level. These provide a baseline that will be well known to most whisky drinkers, bartenders, and liquor store employees. Once you find your preferences from among these, you can direct your journey accordingly from there, and you can provide this information to others when soliciting recommendations. Depending on where you live, it may not be necessary to buy entire bottles. Bars can be a great resource. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area that has a few bars with substantial whisky collections. When I'm ready to add some new whisky to my collection, I'll go to the bars and sample a few. Most recently, I was in the market for bourbon and rye. Two of the bottles I purchased were inspired by bar visits. Another option, if they are available in your area, is mini-bottles. Many of the major brands are available this way, and sometimes a store will have some unusual options. I recently bought 50ml bottles of Bunnahabhain 12, Willett pot still bourbon, and a few Balcones whiskies. A mini-bottle will be cheaper than ordering a shot in a bar, so it is a good option for those on a budget. Sampler packs and other small bottle sizes can also be found. I have thought about whiskies that I would recommend to people who might be somewhat new to whisky or might specialize in one type of whisky but are curious about others. Here are a few that come to mind. These are all readily available in bars in my area, they are commonly found in stores, and many are available in mini-bottles. Glenfiddich 12 (Ralfy is right about this one), Glenlivet 12, Macallan 12, Oban 14, lower priced Glenmorangie bottlings, Redbreast 12, Bulleit (bourbon and rye), Buffalo Trace bourbon, Rittenhouse rye, and probably about any of the low- to mid-priced bottles from Maker's Mark, Wild Turkey, Old Forester, or Four Roses. For beginners, I wouldn't ignore the big brand blended Scotch, Irish, or Canadian whiskies either. Whisky nerds might find them a bit uninteresting, but they are designed to be approachable and are therefore great starting points. Chivas Regal 12 was the starting point for my whisky journey. I've long since moved on, but I still have a soft spot for it. This list is not exhaustive; there are plenty of others that are good introductions to their category. There are a lot of KZbin videos that provide beginner's lists and reviews. Many of them have worthwhile recommendations.

6:00 - I keep Glenmorangie 10 around for exactly this "baseline" reason. It's not expensive, it's a perfectly good whisky, and it gives me a known reference point when I am trying something new. Not a sherry bomb, not a peat monster, just something of decent quality and right down the middle to help get my bearings. It truly does help me pick out things that are different or a little more hidden.

.....and I thought it would be "whats your favorite whisky?"....because I get that a lot! I HEAR you about the price increases. I bought a bottle of Laphroaig Lore 2 years ago for 180 dollars canadian. Last year it was 200 dollars...and this year its 225 dollars! And that was at the same stores (provincially controlled here, no private stores). that is an insane increase!

More recently I have bought sample packs of 5 x 3cl samples. I specifically choose ones that I have not tried before and have had decent reviews and intriguing tasting notes. Working through them hoping to be surprised. So far, the Auchentoshan 3 wood has been welcomed most favourably by my pallete! For anyone looking to find one to buy a big bottle, I recommend doing this as a way of widening their experience, in quite a pleasant way of going about things!

Enjoyed the rant 😎👍 I don't need to ask anyone "what should I buy". Nor, should anyone else have to. With all the reviews on YT of all the different types of Spirits, one just needs to pay attention to what is being said in the reviews being watched. If you're still not sure & don't feel comfortable buying a standard bottle; buy several different, as I call them "Airline" bottles (50ml) and have your own little tasting sessions.

It took me like 5 years to kinda find myself in the world of whisky. A lot of mistakes and lot of experimenting along the way. Whisky needs time. But what I wanna really stress, is the responsibility. It´s a beautiful hobby and art, but also a very dangerous one. It´s not for everybody. Walking on thin ice. Every addiction begins as fun, but it ends in hell. Less is more in whisky. Don´t forget that malt mates! Slainte

Woooo! Rant in the Bothy! :D Confession time. A while back I asked Ralfy for a recommendation, and gave some suggestions for what I was looking for, although I'm new to whisky so I probably didn't give good info. Anyway, Ralfy gave a suggestion, I went and bought a bottle, and it wasn't to my liking. Am I upset? No! I thank Ralfy for providing me another step in MY journey. Perhaps someday that journey will lead me to a certain bothy out there in the world, and I'll have a chance to share a dram with him of what I've found to my tastes along the way.

I have to say. Your whisky advice is top notch . There are others worthy of our time in this as well. Your knowledge of whisky as far as whisky tubers go is unprecedented. But what keeps you alone on top of MY list is, your life knowledge , passion and conversational ability to parlay that into quality video sessions that go beyond whisky. You sir are a “Whisky community” treasure. I believe if we sat in a pub for two hours. Whisky would not be the main topic of conversation. 🍻

Great rant Ralfy, it’s always amusing to see someone order a double of Macallan 18 and knock it back in a gulp. As I stand in the liquor store waiting for a bottle of scotch to whisper in my ear, someone will occasionally asks me which one is the best one to buy. Of course I think to myself “none” but I usually ask “what have you tried.” I don’t have near what you have in your larder, perhaps 160 or so different single malts (for tasting…not squirreling away) I’m always on the lookout for something special.

Hello Ralfy. We all know that even being passionate Malt fan you do love exploring new spirits from around the world. Let me kindly recommend you to try Ararat 10YO Yerevan, bottled at 57%. You have previously revied Ararat 10YO Akhtamar (40%) and gave very nice feedback, which is an absolute honour for me as an Armenian. Mentioned expression of Ararat distillery is really outstanding and that would be absolutely fantastic to hear your opinion about that. It's worth mentioning that it's not just the cask strength version of the other one, but completely different blend with up to 37YO spirits mixed in it.

Another good discussion Ralfy. The passive consumer volume supports the overhead for the whisky you are interested in. Don't ever forget that, it's so important. You've also overestimated the price of a bottle of vodka by nearly 50%. You're lucky if it's 80p

Watch the ralfy show and you'd know what to buy. Look back at the old videos and if you have an idea of a tipple you'd like to try, ralfy probably has a video on it. He's been a great help to me in my journey through Scotland one bottle at a time. Not only young people at the bar, older folks completely blasted sitting next to each other and literally yelling at each other at the top of their voices, like there's no one else at the bar.

I agree so much about Glenfiddich. It's very good to bring new people in the hobby. It is accessible both money wise and flavourwise and you can also buy it everywhere. It has managed to become a staple in my homebar as well.. I use it to compare how other whiskeys have changed over the years by comparing them with it and differentiate between my old comparisons

I don't see how anyone drinks Jagermeister by itself, much less mixed with anything, but to each their own I guess. I think the only 2 whiskey cocktails I've ever liked are a Rusty Nail and Old Fashioned. But I'm picky on the latter as to what goes in it. My whiskey education has really risen thanks to Ralfy and others. For instance, with all the attention in the bourbon world going to Buffalo Trace (never mind everything that comes out of the distillery is chill filtered), I opted to go with straight bourbons that aren't chill filtered. Just today I got Jim Beam Old Tub (totally unfiltered, not just nonchill-filtered) and Old Forester Signature 100. Neither are chill-filtered, both are 50%, and due to bourbon laws no additional colors. The Old Tub is actually a bottled in bond, a category of which I'm a growing fan. And both are breathtakingly affordable. I've had Old Tub before, so this second bottle I'm considering a collector's item. What I love most about the Old Tub is JB addresses haziness on the back label. The text there reads _"it has not been carbon or chill filtered - only quality screened to remove bits of barrel wood. You may notice some haziness when you add ice. Think of it as an indicator of the true, full flavor of this bourbon."_ 😍 Ralfy if you can find a bottle you may want to give it a go. I've seen that same statement on a bottle of single malt I have (Glen Fohdry French Oak cask, a Total Wines brand of some unknown single malt scotch), "warning" customers about haziness and saying that's natural in nonchill-filtered whiskeys. Love this. I hope between this and the Old Tub, it sparks change for the better.

(( Dear Ralfy, i have been a fan since time immemorial of video 1 ! . . . u mentioned of mindful of cash, how about a section on HOW TO ENHANCE YOUR BLEND , example : besides adding a core/heart malt Cardhu to JW Walker Black or Talisker to all-malt Walker Green - or Strathisla to Chivas Regal, with your encyclopedic flavour profile, make a suggestion of an alternate - or closest single malt to a Blend to enhance it. Reason: some countries, like mine in this North Pole called Kanata, we ain't got no variety of choices. So, even adding a Cardhu-12 (which is not always available) to J Walker is hard, how about adding a similar Speysider with light smoke, such as Glenfarclas, or Aberlour - but not a lightly peated Higlander such as Ardmore, etc... and etc .... This should provide infinite permutations - so, a series of 10-12 top readily-available blends would do nicely for 2023 (Ballantine, J&B, W&McKay, Chivas, Walker, Black bottle, Grant's , Dewars, ..). Many thanks. . . Now back to my igloo, I have a Xmas tree to grow... )).

Absolute truth! But as a native Russian, can I allow myseft a word in protection of vodka? A good vodka has more to it than just booze. There is also a philosophy. Without going too much into it, I can tell vodka can be as good if digested properly with proper food and in proper way and in, important, proper quantity. Such a way is not popular in my country and not known at all abroad (man, sipping warm vodka, what the hell have you been thinking of?!?), however I just feel I need to voice it.

That was brutal to listen through, but worth it at the end. Quite a contrast with early Ralfy videos produced with a certain level of joyful enthusiasm and excitement to be sharing the experience. Expect one of the future EXtras to deal with what a low level rube that Ralfy of 10 years ago was! (That's a joke) Something I've observed but never found the words for is the phenomenon of whisky drinkers paying for expensive bottles simply so they can tell others how much they paid. You put that into better words, or more specific words, in observing that for them the experience IS the price they paid. That aspect carries beyond drink, and I've always found it odd.

Your point about Talisker also applies then to Springbank..The prices are crazy. As for NAS bottlings, there are a lot of young distilleries producing young NAS(a lot of them being very open with what is going into there product) whisky that is far better than a lot of stuff out there with older age statements...

I’d argue that Springbank is one of the best value whisky’s out there, when it’s at RRP and has not had its price artificially bumped up.

@@Turdmon And where would you find it at fair retail price. Certainly nowhere here on the continent (I'm in Germany) and just nipping over to the distillery shop isn't an option. 4 years ago I bought a bottle of SB 15 for 68€ These days you won't see it under 130€ and it can go up way over 200€

That’s the fault of the retailers in Germany not Springbank

Its even more weird, if you are compariable young yourself and have the mindset. In my consciousness I wasn't the weird one, cause I sat with 19 with my Glenlivet 12 in the studentlead bar, while others junk down overly sweet drinks. It was them.

To answer "What Should I Buy Next"... well, I do turn to trusted palates that haven't really led me astray yet. (Yes, that's Ralfy... but also the commenters here. This community is pretty trustworthy.) I'm going to do a shout-out to my local pub that specializes in whisky. It's a place called Judge's Bench in Ellicott City, Maryland. The list of single malts is almost too huge. It has to be 10 pages single spaced, official bottlings, independent bottlings, Scottish, Irish, Japanese, you name it. You might look at the list and freeze like a deer in headlights. Pre-pandemic, we'd go with 4 people who weren't afraid of getting germs, and we'd each order a sample flight of four different malts. They're only about 15 ml pours each. Half an ounce. It's enough to get a taste. Certainly, after trying 16 different malts in a night -- in amounts that will NOT get you loopy -- we'd find something to our liking. Buy that one! We randomly hit Glendronach 18 back in 2011 like this. Heh. My "Number 1 With A Bullet", and still my all time favorite. Getting pricey though. If you have a way to try before you buy, all the better. But try.

I bought a bottle of Bruicladdich Islay malt 2012 and I was disappointed, it is like a more robust Glenfidich - 50% so it is strong, but the flavour is not pleasant

Ralfy, Get yourself down to Lidl. Your classic review 795 of Lidl Queen Margot 3 year old needs an update. It was the cheapest whisky you have reviewed. Lidl now have a 3 year old whisky called Dalmuir in almost exactly the same packaging. Red cap, same shape label But with gold edging instead of white. We want to know if standards are similar. Have they changed distillery? Why drop a name with a good reputation? Christmas is coming and some of us are looking at the budget end. Your trick of adding a drop of good malt to Queen Margot was a useful tip too. I used Laphroaig 10 year old. Take care.

My question is not what to buy next, but more of what do you drink when your not reviewing? Does Ralfy have a go to bottle that you would buy on a regular basis or no because you have so many different bottles already?

Someone should convince William Grant & Sons to do integrity bottlings of their brands. Maybe even just bottling them under William Grant & Sons instead of the actual label if they don't want to "hurt" their brands (I just to try a higher proof Glenfiddich mostly)
