I've never seen a blended scotch with a big "3" year old on the label. I'd try a bottle just for that unapologetic age statement.

I'd rather drink this, an honest and decent 3yr old, than most other NAS whiskies that are probably a very similar ages and at least twice the price!
@Zofer-19205 жыл бұрын
Transparency is a sign of respect to the consumer. I’ve bought lesser known whiskeys when they are upfront with information. Even when a spirit isn’t hitting every mark in a stellar way, there’s much your palate can learn and also appreciate when you do find others that are stellar. Information is always appreciated!
@MaLiCeCoLtRaNe5 жыл бұрын
Scotch whisky is required by law to be at least 3 years old regardless, so the 3 year age statement is rather redundant. But at least you know from the label that it’s legal!
@Tomislav_B.5 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna be a devil's advocate for a moment here... For me this "honesty" with a 3yo statement looks like some kind of marketing trick aimed at whisky enthusiasts who are looking for a honesty, transparency ect.. And it's working! Because if you think of it, 3yo statement is useless. It must be at least 3yo.

Thanks for this, Ralfy. I’ve recently been quite impressed with the blends coming from Loch Lomond. “Single Blends” they are, I believe! I tried one randomly in a local bar where it was the rail. Did not expect much, but was very impressed for the price. Nothing fancy, but for a price per glass that’s less than most local craft beers it is a nice thing to have as an option! I've reviewed loads from both Aldi and Lidl and some have been superb, I know you'll never review the NAS offerings but some have blown me away considering the cost. Lidl have done 8, 10, 12 age statement single malts although very sporadic in release, all worth checking out. I find spending between fifteen and twenty pounds on a Supermarket blend or Single Malt will almost always be a better punt than single malts or famous blends around the same price.

With minimum pricing it can't be less than £14 for a 28 unit bottle (at 40% abv) in Scotland. Which has made things quite interesting at the bottom end of the blend market, as the big boys slash their prices to push out the "Grey Friers Bobby" "Misty Glen" 's etc. If like me you're 70 miles from a Lidel, the Coop's own 3yr age stated blend is worth considering, especially given that they sell the half noggin version of the same for £7.50 making it the cheapest half bottle in the shop. Probably the country (Scotland).

Ralfy, good food for thought. I will try with the Glenmorangie 10 year (about $30 here) that I enjoy as-is. Add a bit of a peated scotch and another dram with a bit of a sherried scotch and see how they do. And also with an inexpensive bourbon that is kinda "meh" and flat with a very flavorful bourbon. Never really thought about home blending. Thanks and cheers. Enjoyed the shout out to Richard Head.

It’s a lovely whisky, for a fantastic price. The reason probably being it’s origins are undisclosed, but you don’t hear me complaining. Accordingly to your review about the Queen Margot 3 yo, I started to try out the less expensive options available in supermarkets here in Switzerland... Here is a small resume of what I found: 1. Glen Scanlan, blended Scotch (bought in a supermarket called "COOP") The nose is nothing special at all... but this is good stuff, especially for the price of 22.00 CHF for 1 litre of 40% (that's about equal to 22.00 USD). Very buttery flavor and taste, very smooth, no after burn nor alcoholic notes like mostly from too young blended Scotch Whisky. 2. Scottish Piper, blended Scotch ( bought in a supermarket called "Denner") This one is a cherry bomb... already in the nose and also tastewise... for 20.00 CHF for 1 litre of 40% (that's around 20.00 USD) this is the "best bang for buck" I've found... for me it is just too sweet... so I prefer the Glen Scanlan. But if you like sweet, "cherry finish" type of Scotch with out the tannin of a "complete cherry cask Scotch" this one is for you... 3. Halkins, blended Scotch... this one was the cheapest bottle (13.00 CHF for 0.7 litre of 40%) I can't even remember where I've bought this one... It was aweful... I highly recommend to stay away from this crap... horrible alcoholic smell and taste with an unpleasant after burn... and after the first dram I already felt bad... you get this feeling like: one more glass of this and you may start to vomit... anyway I just ending up mixing this with some Ice Tea... at least it worked as a mixer...

My advice to the viewers of this channel and to people who read the comments is: find and buy a new white european oak barrel with 10-15 litres volume, soak it well for a week changing the water two or three times and after that fill it to the top with this whisky. You can even add a litre or two of pure grain ethyl spirits 96°. This will make th ABV of your mixture approximately 46°- 50°. After that leave the barrel in a cool not too dry place (basement if you have) for one year. When this year is over you will have such an excellent whisky that you will seriously start doubting is it worth buying from shops all the stuff that costs less than 100-200 euro per bottle. Believe me. Of course you can leave it to mature more than a year, but then you will have to taste it periodically because there is a risk your whisky to become very dark and bitter due the small size of the cask and fast saturation with tannins.

Richard Driskill Yes, that’s a very good way of enjoying the wonder of whisky. The small cask that my friend bought was charred internally. And it came with instructions and information about how to soak it and prepare it. Also, it’s reckoned to mature the whisky, one month equivalent to one year, because of its tiny dimensions.
@nickolaymiltenov5 жыл бұрын
@Richard Driskill As much as i know all casks are charred to some point because open flame is used to bend the boards. Beside that there is nothing wrong with the taste of pure oak unaltered by sherry, brandy, bourbon etc. To me first fill is even much more preferred because i have tasted very good destilates literally ruined by old, worn, dirty casks. Your idea is not bad, but as i said it is a question of taste.
@gordonpage15 жыл бұрын
Richard Driskill - He purchased it from Amazon UK. Master of Malt were also selling them, last time I looked. When he emptied the first fill of water, a couple of small fragments of burned wood were present, so it seems like the cask really was charred.

I've recently taken a leaf out of your book and blended a quite disappointing Bunna 'Stuir-whatsit' with the latter part of a Laphroaig 10 and Talisker 10. The Bunna was a birthday pressie, but alas the NAS distillate on this batch must have been fouled by foreshots or feints, as there was a distinct vomit odour from the whisky. Thankfully the now settled 'blend' is really rather pleasant, but the same mistake will not be repeated. I will stick with the Bunna 10 or cash strength in future 😉.

@@thewhiskybothy Possibly do one when you take a trip to Glasgow sometime? Another of my favourite KZbinrs, TheCriticalDrinker, does them and they are good fun. A great way for a crafter of content, like yourself, to connect with their fans. Cheers!

I bought my first BAD whiskey EVER last month.. I thought it was Me But then my partner said the exact same (no prompting) - she doesn't drink.. but it gives her excellent TASTE tools. Should I name the name? It burned my (and her mouth) like petrol or something !

My sole income is benefits (MND for 7 years). I normally spend between £50 and £150 per bottle. I enjoy 2 or 3 drams per week - measured pub double, and reckon that I consume about 3/4 of a bottle per month. I spend about £1,000 per year. Mostly thanks to my darling Italian wife being good with money. What’s not to like! A joy and a privilege!

ralfydotcom - Always a great product, is why I’m proud of the Scotch whisky industry. And price doesn’t always reflect what you get. I mean that in the positive. I had a dram of Bowmore 15 year old, G & E, last night. Deeee - Lish! I paid 80 quid for it at Edinburgh airport (litre), a couple of years ago. If it cost double, I wouldn’t have been disappointed.

Your off track Ralfy. People who buy cheap stuff aren’t looking at reviews. People who watch reviews are looking for excellence.
@frankcousins64795 жыл бұрын
Disagree, Ralfy is not just about reviews, but about providing insight and a POV on variety of whisky related topics - and importantly our appreciation of quality is always and always will be relative to our own experience... plenty of folks out there associate 'excellence' with cost/budget, as opposed to considering 'value'

Here might be something presented as excellence/luxury but how much value does it carry? www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/2019/ultimate-whisky-l19720.html?locale=en

Respectfully Sir, you are a victim of marketing. the 3 Year Queen Margot has integrity pricing and bottling.

"People who watch reviews are looking for excellence." And it looks like we found it with Queen Margot to a large extent.

Come on Ralfy, not all scotch whiskies are good to drink. Just because it had age statement doesn't make it good whisky. Some whiskies (mainly scotch, including many single malts) are total rubbish, undrinkable, waste of our valuable time. And our time is limited, by the way. There are so many good scotch single malts, I would never waste my time on Queen Margot. We are not getting any younger here.

Stick to the whisky and leave the tax/banking to another channel please Ralfy?
@frankcousins64795 жыл бұрын
Uhm..Not sure this is a fair expectation. Ralfy is known for his opinions and style, and he is free to comment on tax/revenue especially given that in the UK its such an antiquated and misguided draconian method to 'manage' consumption... when its proven not to work and is just a revenue generating exercise. There are plenty of folks doing simple reviews, but the great thing about this channel is you get a bit more of a broader opinion and more interesting discussion.
