I’m usually right with you, but I find this particular malt a lovely any-darn-evening sort of drink. You are, however, spot on when giving it time to open up. I detected no vinegar nots at all, sir. I think you got a bad bottle.

Some bottles need time... If the integrity is there it will likely improve. Maybe even be worth decanting just to unlock it. Come to think of it I have even decanted standard blends and they have significantly improved. Patience malt mates

I tried some blended malts recently. I think there are a few different ways to overblend whisky. To many types of casks used, to many malts or grains or simply too large batches. At the beginning of my maltjourney I though, that is only a problem in blends, but after time I realized, that even single malts are often than not a composition of more than one singular whisky. And its really true: Whisky is produced by the people, who put the whiskys from different barrels together. And thats the art-form.

Coming from the superb all-Sherry Benriach 12, I certainly can’t justify buying this. Especially after all the foretelling of the mediocre score. “The few times I have tried this over the last 4 weeks” - there only 3 oz gone!! “Needs two teaspoonfuls of water” I think that’s the most water you’ve added to a 46 percenter. You’re a gem Ralfy. Just saved me $80 Canadian!

Hiya Ralfy. Enjoying your videos. Your recommendations never go astray. I have an idea/suggestion for you, building on a video you did last year. You recommended 3 bottles for 2020 (which, as I recall were the Bladnoch 10, GlenDronach 18, and the Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength). I'm wondering if you might not do a few similar videos, but focusing on *region* instead, with an emphasis on less well-known/quality drams. (E.g., here are 3 Speyside whiskies that fly under the radar but are excellent; or, here are 3 Islay whiskies worth your hard-earned cash that too few people enjoy). Cheers.

I find that this is relatively lackluster on its own. However, I find it pairs really well with something warm and rich, like a bowl of borscht with smetana, or spicy beef noodle soup.

I just picked up a bottle of this to try, mainly because I found out they're owned by Brown Foreman (of which I am a stock shareholder). It's not bad, but for a 12 year with natural color (a firm criteria for me), I prefer Glenfarclas. You recommend the 10 year-old, so I'll try that, because I was confused that the 10-year was $10 cheaper than the 12 -year.

I was only able to try this with a sample from a store, I enjoyed it. I didn't really get any vinegar notes, but it was only a small sample. They also had a bottle of The Smoky Twelve opened for tasting which I enjoyed. One of my friends picked up The Smoky Ten which we both enjoyed. (They are completely different whiskies though, different cask types) It was also cold outside when I got my sample since we had to do it outside :P

I have a bottle and don’t taste a vinegar note either. But I’ve had random bottle of various malts that have randomly had a vinegar note. I have no idea why, but I’m guessing some batches or runs are off key. I hate vinegar notes in single malts.

Like many boutique bourbons I’ve tried, this comes off as a bit “hot” on the tongue. Reminds me of a bourbon almost. It’s my first Benriach, so I don’t have a point of reference... but where I am I found it to be fair value to quality. It was one of the cheapest 12 year olds on the shelf. Just a bit hot and tight at first, but over a few weeks it loosened up enough for me to enjoy it.

Old Pulteney still produce good quality single malt, drinking the core range for some years i find the the quality didnt go down. So far i didnt have a bad bottle even after rebranding. Just saying...

I have to agree with you and some of the comments here. I found this bottle very harsh and unbalanced upon first opening it. But give it time. Let it sit with the cork off. Let it sit in the glass for a bit. Let it sit with water for a while. And even let the bottle sit for a bit after having some and come back to it. This one really needs time and air. Give it those, and you will be surprised at the complexities it offers. And the balance that finally does come to it with time.

"The Smoky Twelve" got some pretty high acclaim from a US publication recently but it sounds like it might suffer from the same kinds of things as the regular 12. I recently purchased a bottle of Peated Cask Strength Benriach on offer at my local liquor store but I'm a bit concerned. Oh well. You win some, you lose some.

It is indeed true...besides the integrity of bottling at at least 46% and not chill filtering the whisky... what's important is the Taste and the Mouthfeel and you never shy away from speaking what the bottle (or the whisky) speaks to u in terms of both integrity & quality... Both of which are necessary to be measured in order to define the caliber of a good whisky!

Soft spot for Benriach. One of my first malts as it was cheap at the time. It was a 16 year old bourbon cask, and was great, probably because I didn't know much better. Shame about this bottle, 80....yikes!

I figured when Brown-Forman bought them they would re-brand and make it more "friendly". At 12 years old the previous owners would have filled the bad casks. There are now about 10 whiskies I won't buy anymore that I used to enjoy. The bad casks deal is serious and becoming the normal.

I am following along with a sample of the 12 y.o smoky version, which I find to be fairly interesting. perhaps the smokiness helps rounds off some of the sharpness. I absolutely cannot stand that intense ashy, and astringent pepermint oil citrus finish that comes from re charred casks!

I just received a bottle of The Smoky Twelve, which swapped Port casks for Marsala casks, and having a couple drams tonight I quite liked it. I'm much much less experienced so take that with a grain of salt. It definitely opened up with some water and I preferred it that way though, 100% agree there. My friend who got me the gift doesn't like scotch, but she even liked it at full strength, and then even more with water. I'm not sure if you've revisited the series, or even given this bottle another try after a couple years have now passed. But I hope it has grown a bit more for you! Or maybe the Marsala casks just give the Smoky version just a bit more character. Either way, I hope you give them both a try. Best wishes from the states, my friend!

I'm not surprised. No offense to Rachel Barrie but when she revamped the whole range and came with her three casks maturation, i felt something was wrong. I had already pointed out a great difference between Billy Walker's Curiositas and hers, much too mellow and plain for me. I remain a big fan of the Septendecim or Authenticus like Ralfy (rated 91 and 92) but the new bottlings aren't for me. The new Benriachs are at my local supermarket and that is not usually a good thing.

I agree with the prior suggestion to do a review of The Benriach The Smokey 12, their peated variety. I have not had this 12. But I had the Smokey 12 and loved the mixture of the smoke and the underlying flavors of the 12. I would love to know what Ralfy thinks of the Smokey 12. It was rated the Whiskey Advocate #3 whiskey of the year for 2020, and the top rated new scotch whisky.

In my opinion, The Ardbeg 5 Wee Beastie has the aspartame/diet Coke/artificial sweetener taste as well, especially on the finish. I can't drink it. But I love the Ardbeg 10. I need to try the Uigeadail.

Entered their website and on the core range there is no info about chill filtration, but if you look for the Septendecim you'll see there clearly stated that it's not chill filtered. So, they chill filter their product even at 46% abv. If that's not taking the biscuit then I don't know what is it.

A lot of them are NAS Whisky but the caliber of casks is good and as we all know in the hot climate Whisky ages very well and very quickly. Also I like what coming out of Catskill from New York.

Have you recorded this video during the cold snap mid-February, Ralfy? I can see your breath, pal. It's not that sub-zero dry cold anymore right now when this vid is released, it just feels harsh due to the eastern wind from the North Sea and lots of moisture in the air. That's the worst kind of cold, cuts right through all layers of clothing... I hate this weather, never got used to it. Wind from the east, not good for man nor a beast. There's only one way to stay warm in this weather and it's good whisky. Slainte!

I'm aware that some whiskies matured in poor casks are re-reracked in better wood or finished in casks that add strong sherry, port or red wine etc flavours to mask deficiencies - love to see a review that goes into those processes and some tips on how to spot the initial poor cask maturation through those masking techniques 🤔

08/2021 bottled 12 - first nose, first note is vinegar and frankly has not improved for me no matter how much water I added. As a whisky sophomore, this (along with the 10 year) is the single worst dram for discerning notes (and even sensations). Yes, exotic fruits start appearing somewhere along the experience, but even then, it is weak - and you already have been put off by the initiation. I really wanted to like this, really. Shelving the Benriach experience for the next 5 years.

Update: did what Ralfy recommended - half a teaspoon of water + time to breath (min 15 min) - overwhelming vinegar stench gone - thus other notes have easier time to unfold - more enjoyable and interesting but - still weak character and finish in my opinion. Question is, why put up with so much prep and patience when you can have much better right off the bat?

Hi Ralfy, this is a bit of an oddball whisky. I agree the three casks blend into something nondescript and not very interesting at first smell/taste, but I discovered that the casks shouldn't stay married, they need a divorce because they're better off on their own. Try this: don't add water and don't do strolly strolly, but instead shaky shaky. Swirl it around the glass (small wine tasting glass works best) VERY aggressively. Smell and taste again. It won't get to a 90 out of a 100, but a few points more than 80 is attainable imho. Cheers!

This may be less than what Ralfy was expecting from it, but compared to some similarly priced NAS malts I’ve had this would be a world beater. I’m not going to name names, but in the US there are some gnarly malts in this price range. This one was at least punchy, which is better than watered down 40% stuff. I probably won’t be buying another bottle anytime soon, but I’m able to enjoy it.

Good man! Glenlivet 12 was my first whisky... and it will probably be my last (or, possibly, Glenfiddich 15 "Solera"... a very fine dram!). Either way, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are not best-selling single malts for nothing! "Afficiandos" can have their Islay peat monsters (yuck; the fact that Prince Charles loves and endorses Laphroaig should be warning enough!); give me a dram of Glenfarclas 12... or 18 (be still, my heart!)... and I'm in heaven... Slàinte!

@@gardenphoto Peter, i have like the Glenlivet first fill 12 years, but it is nice, but you can better try the Deanston 12 year old, unless the price is a big difference where you live. Michael, i like peat whiskies alot, if it is not your taste ( like a friend of mine who also drinks whiskies, but dislikes peat), you can't have a honest opinion about peat ones. I do have a Glenfarclas here, the 18 one haha. What i like about Glenfarclas is, that it is not to expansive.

The new 10yo Curiositas after rebranding is absolutely different creature. Much much sweeter and way less smoky than the older one. Personally, I prefer the old one. And after this review from Ralfy I think more and more that Brown Forman will do anything to get their money back, no matter what...

@@martinbeen just a personal opinion, for me it is the worst single malt I have ever tasted! thin bland blend fodder now unfortunately. Shame because it was once what Terry Kay would call a 'swee'art' malt.

@@chrish12345 I had the Old P 12 too, i liked it, it was ok, but not more than that, so no Old P for me soon haha. 12 year olds i liked where the Glenallachie, Deanston and Glendronach.

Interesting as the owner of one of my local shops in the Netherlands was suggesting this to me. Not a promising review. Given that there are so many good ones out there at the same price point I don't think it will appear in my purchasing priority list

Hey Ralfy, have you considered reviewing the Glenlivet Illicit Still? 12 year age statement, 48% ABV, non-chill filtered, good price. Having a couple drams of it now and it's quite the step up from the regular Glenlivet range!
