Good job Rick, decades ago I went to a local Goodyear tire store, borrowed their spring compressor, replaced the stock shocks/struts on my then 1978 VW Scirocco with Bilstein Sport setting dampers. Wasn’t until later I would learn these struts had the same stiffness as ‘race’ struts, but just in taller shock tubes. Good on you! I’m still thinking about the RT springs for my OB, mainly for the stiffer rate while driving our mt pass highways in Oregon.
@AZdroptop5 жыл бұрын
Nice! I was pretty intimidated by the whole job...especially using the spring compressors, but in the end it wasn't all that bad. If I hadn't had that issue with the passenger side strut nut all would have been smooth sailing. :) But it never seems to work out that way for me. LOL I bet that was a stiff ride after you put those Bilstein's on! Springs on the Outback would be a nice improvement I bet...You must have some amazing roads to explore up there. Thanks for checking in David...always great to hear from you.

Hi Rick- Great video. I just purchased a 2023 Crosstrek and installed a rear hitch for a motorcycle carrier. Rear end sags 1" with motorcycle (250 lbs) fully loaded. I called RalliTek after seeing your video and they recommended a 1/2" overload spring for all 4 tires versus just the rear. Looking to install next week. Any key points from your install you could share?
@AZdroptop2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tom and congrats on your new Crosstrek! It is a pretty straight forward install and that is coming from someone who had never done springs in the past. The hardest part is getting to all of the bolts up front when the car is on the ground...it is recommended that you snug everything up with the car in the air, put the wheels on the ground to support the suspension, loosen it all up and then re-torque. Best I could come up with was keeping it on jack stands and then compressing the front suspension with a jack to simulate it being on the ground. If you have a good shop you ask them to do it when you are having the car aligned. I really liked the ride quality after install and it did help me get a bit of lost ground clearance after my skid plate and bar install. Really helps with the sag when the car is full as well and should be great for your bike!

Hey Mike, when I first took it off of jack stands the rear was definitely looking high. It has settled some, but the rear is definitely a bit higher than the front. There are spacers you can buy to help level it out from what I have seen. The ride improvement really is good and although I didn't get quite an inch in the front it has taken away the heavy feeling of the skid plate and bar. Coil overs would be pretty sweet. :) I'll measure the back again today and let you know if it has come down any.

Next Monday 7/22, I go to my dealer to fix my upper strut bearings. It is a mystery to me how the rubber covers that fit over the top hats let moisture in when they are a tight fit! Hi Rick. I just ordered a 2023 sport about 4 weeks ago. Still waiting. I'm putting a set of Method 502's with a 215/75R15 tread. Haven't picked out the specific brand yet. Very interested in your experience with the 1" rallitek spring kit. I will be pulling a small drift boat. The trailer has a tongue weight of 130lbs. I'm thinking that kit will help with ride/sag. Any thoughts or insight would be much appreciated. Interested to hear what you think the car looks like with the kit (is it too much with that size tire?). And your thoughts on the ride without a load (is it too stiff?). Did you go with the standard 1" spring, or the overload spring?
@AZdroptop2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mick, congrats on the Crosstrek coming your way. No regrets with the 1" springs..they are the standard version and greatly improved the ride quality of the car. I didn't find them to be too stiff at all. They helped some with my loss of clearance after installing the front bar and skid plate and definitely help a ton when the car is loaded and or towing. When there is nothing in the car the back end is a bit higher than the front, but nothing crazy. I am happy I put them on the car.

Thanks for checking. I installed some springs but getting a slight clunking noise and I can only think it’s coming from the top hat since I wiggled every other part and they all seem solid. I installed the front top hat and there didn’t seem to be any markings or any stoppers for the spring but no matter how I put it to the strut tower (the body panel to mount the 3 bolts) they fit even if rotated. But my hypothesis is if there isn’t a certain way, maybe my top hat bearings are shot and hence I’d just have to replace those top hats. Your thoughts?
@AZdroptop3 жыл бұрын
The only thing I can think of is maybe you didn’t tighten the strut nut down enough? Is there a chance that you didn’t compress the spring enough before tightening the strut nut? Only other thing might be if the pigtail of the spring isn’t set in the right spot?

HI Jon, on the driver's side it was a bit harder to do because I forgot to loosen up the end link on that side. There's always debate on how to torque bolts after spring/lift 'Cup Kit' installations but I would definitely loosen all the bolts up and re-torque while the wheels are on, so you're not binding the bushings. I'm going kamikaze with the stock plastic cover for now after seeing what a Primitive skid plate did. There really isn't a way around a lift with an aftermarket skid plate, which I really don't want to do on a Crosstrek since its just puck spacers.

Thanks Rick! Since buying my first Subaru (Crosstrek) 3 months ago, I've learned a lot from your videos. Great work! I've already installed a 1.5" LP Adventures lift (spacers) and was considering the RalliTEK springs like yours for (1) additional lift and (2) to accommodate future weight (bumper, skid plate, hitch, etc...). My question is "do you know if a body lift + spring lift combo of 1.5" and 1" (respectively) would place any drive components in a compromised angle that would dramatically reduce their life?". Thanks in advance for an insights / wisdom you can offer.

Hey Thomas, thank you for the kind words. The only concern with adding the additional height would be possible effects on alignment. I have the lift waiting to go in once I have the time so I will let you know after I have it aligned. I bought some camber bolts from ADF I believe, that allow for a bit more adjustment. Thank you again for watching along!

@@AZdroptop Thank you Rick! Good feedback. I actually just took the car in for alignment and the LP Adventures 1.5" lift did a surprisingly good job of maintaining factory specs. I needed little to no front camber adjustment after the lift / tires / wheels install which (I think) means that even if I needed a camber adjustment after installing springs like yours, I should have enough room with factory hardware to adjust. If you'd like me to share my before / after alignment measurements, let me know and I can send you a copy. I'm kinda new to KZbin, so I'm not sure how to share a PDF. Thanks again for your inspiring work! Keep it up, and have a good one!

Thank you Thomas! You can email me stuff at azdroptopyt@cox.net I appreciate the after lift alignment info! Very cool. I have been so busy with getting my shop finished that I just can't find the time to do the lift yet...Now my son's car needs springs. :) It's always something. Thank you again Thomas!

what front top strut seal are you using?

The larger cap is the new style from the TSB Subaru is doing. If you missed that video I have a really loud intermittent noise off road and they found surface rust, which is part of the TSB, and rust had penetrated down into the bearing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqDElKOnrM1jjK8

Great video, as always! Did you get an alignment after installing the springs?
@AZdroptop4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I did get one a couple days later. If I remember correctly the toe was out quite a bit and they said the camber was close to the limit. It will be interesting to see the alignment specs after I put the lift on.

do you think i could fit 235/75/r15 tires after doing this one in lift? really want to do it on my new 2021 crosstrek sport
@AZdroptop4 жыл бұрын
I honestly can't say for sure...from what I have read the 235's rub on aftermarket mud flaps, but clear the rest of the car. Check out Blake's garage here on youtube as he has 235's. He did a interesting video awhile back and dyno tested the Crosstrek with stock wheels/tires and then with 235's. Pretty interesting video and worth watching before you go with the 235's.
