Maybe one thing to mention is rally is not road racing, building to the limit of the spec won't necessarily make you the best, the driver component is way more important. In motocross we say 80% rider, 20% machine, I think rally is of the same realm.

SCCA RX 2018 rules on wheels: You can go +1" or -1" from OEM *diameter*. The width has to remain the same as OEM. Also, offset/backspace must be within 10mm of the OEM wheelset.

This has been great info! Thanks. I have an old X1/9 and I am thinking of doing some American Rally Cross with. It will be stock for now, but eventually move into the Mod class. I have attended the SOFR a few times now. I will probably volunteer this coming year. 2020. There has been a couple older Ford Escorts at the SOFR. When it was a RA sanctioned rally, I would think their class would be the Vintage class mentioned in the 2018 rule book. The ARA rules have no mention of a vintage class. Is there still a vintage rally car class in the ARA for 2020? If things work out for me and my X1/9, I might be able to do a stage rally with it, but what class would this be in? Limited 2wd, or is there vintage rally classifications out there? I love the X1/9. I know how to work on them. I know they are Fiats. I know there are better things than a Fiat to build. It’s what I have.

Do the difference classes change what safety mechanisms or gear you need to have? i.e. do open cars need roll cages but production is ok without? What about in Rally X? Thanks again
@tjanson6 жыл бұрын
Everything needs a cage except for rallyx. Within a sanctioning body the safety rules are the same for all classes. Slight diffences in safety regs between sanctioning bodies.
@StalePhish6 жыл бұрын
That is an excellent question that I wish they addressed. Would putting a roll cage into an otherwise stock car move you from RallyX stock up to modified?
@HNPRacing6 жыл бұрын
@StaIePhish rallycross if you removed interior that wasn't necessary for the cage it seems that they will put you in modified.

In regards to the end comments about how the Open 4WD/AWD classes are essentially the '6 figure, big bucks' classes out of all of them, its easy to understand that a budget or even semi-budget, 30 40 grand rally car won't be able to be competitive. My question is, between the ARA limited and NA 4WD classes, does a similar huge gap exist between the vehicle capabilities? Or could you be moderately competitive if your car fits both classes? (Or is it impossible/insanely difficult to have your car be able to meet both NA and LIMITED class guidelines?)
@Teamoneilrally5 жыл бұрын
There is a chart on page 17 of the 2019 tech rulebook, the detail to look at is displacement/minimum weight differences between the classes. What platform are you thinking of running? Assuming Impreza because that's the most common: NA 4WD you can run a 2.5L engine and 2600lb car... Think 1st gen Subaru Impreza with a built motor. If you go Limited 4WD with the same car, the minimum weight is 3100lbs so you'd have to add ballast to pass tech... OR run a newer 2nd or 3rd gen Impreza with a NA 2.5, then you'll meet the minimum weight for Limited but you're 500lbs heavier than the minimum for NA 4WD... SO it could be done for sure! Run a gen1 Impreza built for NA 4WD and add ballast to run Limited, or a gen2 or 3 Impreza and ditch as much weight as you can if you want to enter NA 4WD. Reminder: a '96 Impreza NA 4WD car just won the Southern Ohio Forest Rally overall out of +70 cars if that gives you food for thought. Just looked: 5th, 6th, and 7th overall were also NA 4WD Imprezas. A ton of the turbo cars blew up... A Honda Passport got 12th overall...

@@Teamoneilrally To be honest, I didn't really have a platform in mind, I just am pretty confident I'd prefer to run 4WD. I appreciate the prompt response, makes perfect sense. Thank you!

Which Group is easiest to just casually show up and race with? Like one or two races a year, mostly for fun. Probably with a modified fwd car. I'm West Coast, but may be useful for everyone on east coast and everywhere else as well.

Depends on the region. All rally classes are fun and welcoming. But for competition it changes per rally and every year.

Don't forget about Rally America Spec-B class! It's essentially stock Honda Fit's, Nissan Versa's, and Kia Rio's, (among other >140hp cars), with roll cages and winter tires. Pretty legit. Great video! PS, out of all the legal Spec-B cars, the Kia Rio has the best stock p/w ratio ;)
@Teamoneilrally6 жыл бұрын
It's a great class, hopefully it grows! Right now there are only 6 drivers running B-Spec cars in Rally America... Versus about 70 teams in 2WD and around 50 in Open Light. There was only one B-Spec car that finished this past weekend's rally for example, granted only 23 cars finished but still... That's some lonely racing.

I have a 2.5 liter inline 6 BMW e30 325ix will it make open light class?
@Teamoneilrally5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the limit is 2.5 liters regardless of how many cylinders. In ARA you could run in "Naturally Aspirated 4WD." Basically you'll be running against mostly Subaru 2.5 non-turbo Imprezas, and there are usually a bunch so it'll be good fun racing!

Downey Dirty Racing it's the same thing as Autocross where people build for classes but I don't build to the rules in any case. USA should have R5 class championship that is the future of rallying.National championships in South America, Mexico, Asia, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Africa,and Europe are driven with R5 class cars and WRC2 class is for R5 cars.There are manufacturers like Skoda, Peugeot, Citroen,Hyndai, VW and Ford selling their R5 cars. this would make Rally USA more interesting there would be more manufacturers and you could race same car in WRC2 or some national events outside of USA, and have drivers from other countries race in USA

@spartachris24515 жыл бұрын
I mean, they're rambling because they're trying to take what essentially is probably somewhere between 3 and 500 pages worth of regulation information, class specifications, sanctioning body information, and compressing it into a NOT 4 1/2 hour video. Half of the good information would have been lost without the tag team of picking up the slack, and as one guy trails, the other picks up the stutter. 20 minutes of 30 classifications of rally cars giving you enough to figure out the questions to ask. Eliminating the 'you dont know what you dont know'.
