Rally is always insane. Especially Group B. I'd say that Rally is the only sport where the fans have as much balls as the drivers, and Group B is the only division of a sport where the fans have MORE balls than the drivers. The one clip from the Portugal Group B Rally is the only thing you need to show people when you say "Group B is horrendously insane".
@eihelvet32 жыл бұрын
Group B was actually insane. Those cars were killing machines where one tiny mistake could be fatal no matter how talented the driver is. Henri Toivonen was a good example. I'm glad it's over now

Hey Adam. Rally driver here. No you dont get a practice run in Rally. But you get 2 passes in a road car with your codriver to create and perfect the Pacenotes, which are the notes that tell the driver where to go.
@iglooproductions2 жыл бұрын
🤨 You get a shake down usually.
@Chrisduerksen2 жыл бұрын
@@iglooproductions Yes, but where im from the shakedown isnt the actual Rally stage, its a one-off short stage that isnt run in the actual Rally.
@seanb66913 жыл бұрын
The drivers and co-drivers get to drive the course beforehand because they have to make their own notes for the co-driver to tell the driver. So there is a slight element of running the course beforehand but it's pretty hard to remember everything when there's multiple stages and some can be as long as 20-30 minutes
@furtif54372 жыл бұрын
that's true, but in WRC for exemple they use onboard camera to check if the note is correct and in the same time they learn the road
@sander16452 жыл бұрын
Also they need to obey the speed limit when making the notes.
@nuutine2 жыл бұрын
In some rallies or classes pacenotes and driving beforehand are forbidden. Co-driver only has the roadbook and sometimes a really accurate map.

So much understeering in this video, especially when the driver realizes that they're going a bit too fast for a corner and react by pressing the brakes harder. As these cars don't have Anti-lock brakes (ABS) or any other driver aids, this causes the front tires to lockup and the car helplessly slides straight into the wall/ditch/tree or whatever they were trying to avoid in the first place. The right reactionis to actually let up on the brake instead, and/or reduce the steering and let the front tires regain grip with the surface to allow it to turn. Doing so may mean a glancing blow or even avoidance of the obstacle rather than driving head-on into it. That said, the instinct to brake harder is a difficult thing to overcome, hence why modern road cars come with ABS, traction control, and skid control systems.
@hockeykid98782 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the majority of these people have no idea what they are doing. All you see in this video is constant lockups.
@micheleferri21192 жыл бұрын
Yeah there's national championship drivers and world championship drivers in this and you tell 'em how to drive TO THE LIMIT. Also, I really want to see if you would think about all of this when you're at 80km/h, losing the car on a corner tighter than you thought it would be and there's a tree coming at you.

Rally notes are either given by the organizer and the driver doesn't get to drive the stages before hand. Or the driver and co-driver make the notes on pacing run (WRC has two runs per stage). On first the driver tells what he thinks the road is like, and on 2nd run the co-driver read what's written and the driver makes corrections.
@Heksu993 жыл бұрын
Also these are normally before the road is closed so speed limits do apply

If I remember correctly (probably not), only the navigators are shown the course (driven around?) to make detailed notes (as possible) that they'll read one or two turns, rises, dips, etc... ahead. Many of the "stages" are miles long and the weather conditions in one stage or section of a stage can be completely different. The stages also change during the rally from the previous cars so the navigators notes may not be as accurate as they hoped or the driver can't adapt quickly enough. It's a two person team that has to do their jobs correctly every turn. Oh, and the fans are beyond any others (except football/soccer fans), except rally fans are directly involved in it like no other sport is. ;-)
@nicholasjensen80162 жыл бұрын
the drivers get a couple drives for the codriver to take notes but the stages can be more than 30 miles so the driver is mainly listening to the codriver around all the blind corners.

At a professional level the crews are allowed two passes. One to do notes, one to make changes/ corrections. Even those times the local road laws often must be followed, or there is a cap to the speed if the roads are closed(so no practicing at speeds). At a high level there is a lot of video reviews or prior year footage. At amateur's level in the weeks leading up you can often drive the roads as many times as you like but almost always on open roads where the local laws must be followed(so again no practicing).
@jeremyzwiers43353 жыл бұрын
In response to your question at 3:20 ish No they don’t know the whole course beforehand. There’s a passenger in there called a co-driver who has a notebook. In that notebook has all the information they need to drive through the course quickly, and it’s the co-drivers job to tell the pilot what they need to know WHILE they’re driving. Usually they get the info on the corner 5-30 seconds before the actual corner, and the notes are all in shorthand so that it’s easier for the co driver to read them at the speeds their going. A corner could be “left three over crest don’t cut”, which is basically saying the next turn is a left you take at a medium speed (3rd gear) that’s over a small hill on the road, and you can’t cut the corner because of some kind of debree in the way (usually a tree or a rock, but sometimes it could be that they’re racing on a hill and the road just drops off). They do it this way because the stages they drive are often quite long (20minutes is normal) and they do so many over the event that it’s just inconceivable to do a run as a team to make their own information. Often they’re given the notes by the event organizers

3:26 Before the race, they drive through the individual stages in a normal civilian car and write down the schedule and notes. That's all. No practice runs. Oh, and they also have so-called weather spotters, these are people who call them before the start and tell them whether the track is dry, wet, often also the temperature of the asphalt surface, the current weather at the given location, etc.
