NASCAR drivers are braindead, but F1 is a different kind of skill. It's about consistency and stamina. Rally is about pure aggression. In case anyone wants to defend NASCAR, every argument I've heard for why it takes skill is basically saying that they do a few times a year what even low level GT drivers do as a warmup
@lordthicknipples-gt2oq Жыл бұрын
@@filmandfirearmsDamn, that's a lot of assumptions. NASCAR is an endurance race, and not all of the tracks they drive on are ovals; in fact, some of them even feature the dreaded right turns. Of course, I'd much rather go to 24 hours of lemons and watch shitboxes drive around all day but some people are REALLY into NASCAR. Sure, they tend to drive in circles a lot but you can't just say it takes no skill at all. @@lordthicknipples-gt2oq Considering they have no problem letting people with no racing experience whatsoever drive the cars at full pelt, I'm going to say it takes no actual skill. In order for any rally, GT, or FIA Formula team to let you drive their cars on a real course at full speed, you either have to have pretty significant racing experience yourself, or have enough money to pay for any damages. Again, low level GT drivers do more intense stuff as warmups than NASCAR will do as entire races. If we're talking endurance, let's look at Le Mans or Nurburgring endurance series, for example. I'm not a fan of endurance racing, but I have never disparaged the driving ability of anyone who competes in those series because to do well in those requires serious skill and a good strategic mind. As just one example, spotting your breaking point at the end of the Molsanne going over 300 kph after you've been in the car for 2-3 hours already is quite a feat of concentration, particularly since you're also having to listen and feel every time you hit the brakes or get on the throttle for anything that might be wrong with the car

They know where the likely trajectory of the car would be and have reasonable trust in the excellent drivers. This is probably why rally racing isn’t so big in USA- there would be too many safety guidelines that would ruin it
@lachlanbell839028 күн бұрын
There are stupid places to stand close to rally tracks, and not-so-stupid places. The most basic general rule of thumb: anywhere that's not the outside of a corner or sharp turn should generally be safe enough. Obviously specific exceptions exist (eg: at the bottom of a dip after a crest where cars will likely become airborne) but even standing on the outside of a sharp corner or bend, there's a probable trajectory a car is likely to take if it comes unstuck, so any spectator with half a brain can take sensible precautions about where *not* to stand. Rally isn't huge here in Australia, but I've been to a few events & never had any issues, nor heard of any. Far as I can tell rally is much more popular in Europe, and those WRC events have pretty big crowds who are barely a few feet off the track, and my sense is that serious accidents wiping out spectators are still fairly uncommon. Of course, European governments don't treat adult citizens like infants so people are largely responsible for their own wellbeing, and act accordingly. Steve Hughes has a great standup bit about the difference between safety culture in Australia/America, and in continental Europe (are ya wet? Well, then you're in the wrong bit mate 😂)

You gotta take everything you need - food, drinks, chairs etc. - and most rally events are held well outside metro areas, so it's usually a reasonable drive just to get out there & back. Can't just show up to the track venue, park in the parking lot, sit in the stands & buy food/drinks from the food stalls. It looks so graceful and almost smooth from the outside... From the inside, it's a bit like being inside of a can of paint being shaken at Home Depot.
