Wow. World's most forgiving police officer. While at an HPDE at Texas World Speedway, I was getting low on gas. I decided to quickly run down the road to the closest gas station and might've still been in "race" mode. I got pulled over doing 20+ over on Highway 6, in a full suit and helmet, 5-point harness and a bright red Sparco seat with numbers on the car. The cop came up, looked at me, laughed, shook his head and just said "Slow it down, okay?" Yesssir, no problem, sir.

I am an ex pro rallyist, and it's true that you do have to be very careful on road sections. Squeaky clean. In UK we have to cover the door numberswash off the lights and number plates, or we would be ticketed. The RACMSA supported this, because we didn't want the sport coming into disrepute, and ending up having to transport the cars from stage to stage.

A lot of the times in US rallies the rallies are in rural areas because duh forest roads. So these are rural communities who for one weekend get an influx of visitors who come and stay in the area and that brings business. As a result, police sometimes are told to cut the competitors and visitors some slack if they learn they are in the area because of the rally. If the rally organizers hear about too many folks getting tickets. They might not go there anymore and speeding tickets is not worth the money lost from the rally not happening at all.
@donowtube
@donowtube 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the description! I was wondering why in the world this was happening? Like, if they're racing they would partition off the course and the public wouldn't be there. I was so confused. The way they act toward each other makes alot more sense now haha
@BicyclesMayUseFullLane
@BicyclesMayUseFullLane 2 жыл бұрын
@@donowtube In a stage rally, the sections of road between each special stages (aka the vroom vroom cars go fast part) are known as transit stages (aka road stages aka liaison stages), where drivers have to obey local traffic laws while, on open and public road, driving to the next special stage or service park under the race car's own power. This is why buddy got pulled over, because he was obviously speeding on public roads. Incidentally, this is also why a rally car is (technically) road legal (i.e. registered with a license plate and insured, just like any other "regular" cars), otherwise they couldn't even reach the starting line, never mind race. And this is what makes rallying so unique.

So many comments about people not understanding how rallies work. Rally racing isn't held on a closed circuit track or drag strip or whatever where you're in one area. In rally racing you go from X closed track to Y closed track and the only way you'll get there is by DRIVING to the STARTING LINE, so yes he was pulled over during the rally because this is all apart of the rally. Please people.

Haha .. yes so true. But you must understand that neither the US nor any of it's member states are a Rechtsstaat. What's a Rechtsstaat? It is a form of government where exercise of governmental power is constrained by the law with little to no discretion to deviate from that law. When a German police officer has reason to believe that an offense occurred, he has no discretion in the matter and must take action. If a video like that surfaced with a German officer, that guy would be in hot water. By the same token however, a German police officer does not get to shoot you in the face for not having your driver's license with you. Personally I am happier with a police force that will ticket me no matter what, than with a police force that will maybe let me off the hook, but may also empty a gun in my face for no good reason.

Well, I thought the driver did wrong by ignoring the law on this in-between stages drive in the first place - naughty, naughty ;) But he did right by the way he talked to the cop, apologising and acknowledging that he'd made a mistake. The cop did REAL good by using his judgement and common sense with the driver - I think he could tell the driver was genuine and that just the chat was going to be enough for the driver to take on board what he'd done and not do it again. This could have been so, so different if the driver had given the cop the attitude that we've seen some drivers here on KZbin give the cops. Not saying that this cop would necessarily have lost it with the driver because he seems to be one of the "good cops" from his interaction with the driver, but we've seen so many cops lose it with drivers in these videos. Glad he let the driver go on his way :)

Your the one who thinks shooting a running kid makes sense. you must agree with cops beating the shit out of a handicapped person? What about cops who let their egos build while they conduct no investigation and escalate situations? All they have to do is right a report that shifts the blame and their scot free. I've entered similar races where un-sanctioned sections were involved. Creates a difficult environment. Some of us had no problem breaking the law, and others did. This is simply a factor in this style of race. We can't pick-on the officer, simply because I've personally seen 120 mph passes on public roads. There are no rules in race etiquette on public roads, making that event very dangerous to everyone. No win is worth the life of another.
@Invincibletro

@Chris Jones Actually Chris these races were in the US. Novice races that go from one piece of private/state property to another. The cars involved are actually all street legal (usually,) and for many, those cars are daily drivers. If you are talking about professional level I'd agree with you.

@Chris Jones Sure, not disagreeing. You did argue that what I was describing is not how rally or road rally "work(s) in developed nations." I don't know the difference between that and rallycross rules for which I'm governed, but I know what can and will happen in legal rallycross.
