For nearly 30 years, Ralph Peterson has been one of the most distinctive and recognizable drummers in jazz. His talent and drive as a drummer, composer, arranger and bandleader set him apart as a Master among his peers. In 1980, Ralph was accepted into the Jazz Studies program at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Some of his teachers there included Kenny Barron, Paul Jeffrey and drummer Michael Carvin.
Peterson met master drummer Art Blakey in 1983. A few months after sitting in, Blakey called Peterson (then a college junior) to play along side him in his two-drummer big band. This was for a performance at the Boston Globe Festival. Ralph continued in the Jazz Messenger Big Band until Blakey's passing. Peterson takes seriously the honor and responsibility of being the "Last Messenger Drummer" and later paid homage to Blakey on his 1992 recording "Art." In 1985, a year after his graduation from Rutgers, Peterson was hired to perform with piano giant Walter Davis Jr., as well as with trumpeter Jon Faddis. Ralph has since become a member of the jazz elite. His recording and touring resume includes jazz greats like Terrence Blanchard, Branford Marsalis, Stanley Turrentine, David Murray, The Count Basie Orchestra, Betty Carter, and Michael Brecker.
Hope you enjoyed this video on Jazz Drum Set

Ralph was one bad dude! For drummers, every time you see him, it's a lesson in how to do the craft! He had a genius level knowledge of how to do it, and how to teach it. Definitely a GOAT! Rest in Power brother Ralph.

I remember when he first came up in the scene. Anyone who’s a drummer and who loves jazz knows who Ralph Peterson was. He, along with several other jazz musicians in the mid/late 80s was part of the young lions at the time.

around 300- 330 is the most happy yet saddest sounds. Just a huge range of emotions and dopamine released at a point like this. A climax to which I'd wish never end but nothing even this beautiful could last forever and i think that's what makes it that much more special.

I really don't care for jazz, but I enjoyed this. There's nothing better than an awesome drummer to make a band sound good. The sax was very kool too. The tune itself was about as good as jazz gets. Thanks for sharing.

This past month I was feeling bad as I felt that I didn't have many influences that I can draw from. Nothing has really touched me in awhile and I was feeling that it was me. Luckily today I saw this video. This guy is amazing, I Iove how he drives the band, how he flows and his musicality.

Hi Jorge, This type of jazz is called Be bop as it features a classic jazz structure (head, improvisation and head) and an extreme emphasis on the improvisation part. I would probably characterise this as contemporary be bop, differing very slightly from the original style. Ralphs drumming is amazing, he features the tune in his solos which is a sign of a good improvisation. A good improvisation is a good sense of musical development of the material you hear at the beginning. This is an exceptional piece of music, well structured, recorded and played! They are all outstanding musicians, well done guys! Kind regards Nick Moore
@nicktheharpblower
@nicktheharpblower 10 жыл бұрын
How could i forget, the main characteristic of be bop is a complicated harmonic structure which this has, using what are called "extended chords", as well as playing them in diferent inversions :) Ralph listens to the pianists comping style, and the pianist listens to him as well, adjusting acordingly. This is one of the reasons why it sounds professional! Jazz musicians listen to each other very very carefully!
