We have been asked how our Ram 5500 handles our 26,000lb 5th wheel in the mountains so here is a idea of how it handles Wolf Creek Pass with our New Horizons 5th wheel hooked up.

If you play Pickleball and are looking for a paddle check out the NEW KoBo paddles by clicking on this link davek.kobopick... which will take you to their website.
I have had the opportunity to try these paddles and have had the privilege of meeting and playing with the owner of KOBO and his wife who actually designed these paddles from the ground up and worked with a manufacturing plant to produce them. They are all in and committed to hitting the ground running and I am pretty darn certain you will be seeing these paddles across the country very very soon.
And in return if you click on the link above and happen to make a purchase, we will get a small reward which in turn will help our channel. Feel free to share that link with others.
At this point I will also be doing demo days at Pickleball courts as we travel. Hey we like the product and love the story of a small family-owned company starting a new journey and we hope you do to.

I’ve watched a few of your videos. I think you have around 4300lb pin weight. I custom ordered a 45’ Sundowner Living Quarters toy hauler. Dual axle, with gross trailer weight of 18.500lb. With all toys loaded, it’s right at 16,500. That’s easy work for my 2017 dually F-350 with the 6.7 diesel. However, the pin weight is really high, over 5000lb when loaded. I’m well within my GVWR, towing capacity, front axle, and just barely under the rear axle rating. Not much I can change about loading the trailer. The tires, like most gooseneck style horse trailers, are way back. I’ve got a couple issues. Issue 1, I get some bad harmonic vibrations when braking hard, this is my big concern. If I ever need to make an emergency stop, it’s gonna be rough. No vibrations if using only trailer brakes, or just truck brakes. The issue is definitely a trailer issue as it’s way over the max recommended pin weight percentage of 25% or so. Do you think a 4500, or 5500 with the much stiffer suspension would help? Great channel George
@daveanddianethrowingcautio5707
@daveanddianethrowingcautio5707 2 жыл бұрын
First off thanks for taking time to watch our video's and commenting. It sounds like you have a nice toy hauler for sure but yup, that braking issue would concern me to. I don't know that the stiffer suspension would solve your problem BUT the 4500's and 5500's do have larger brakes thank the F350's and 3500's and that certainly would be an improvement. Of course having the higher rear axle weight carrying capabilities of the 5500 couldn't hurt for sure.
@bulletproofdirtworx4030

Thanks I’ve been looking at a 4500 Limited with a Western Hauler bed. 4:10 gears and the de-rated Cummings It’s an 84” CA truck. But with the 4500, it still seems like the rear axle will be pretty maxed out. The rated capacity is right around 8000, but the hauler bed weight is not accounted for. Given, that I’ll be towing that high pin weight trailer, should I be looking at a 5500

How does your rig do coming down sisco mountains from Oregon to California? That's one steep and long hill. My cousin lived in Jacksonville Oregon al drove up and down that hill in my 1989 12 valve wd 250 4x4 with the 5 speed getrag transmission with 354 gears did not use 5th gear because it was overdrive. Going up the hill i used all 5 gears but going down that hill only used 4 gears and they didn't have any exhaust brakes for that truck .its not how fast you get there it's the getting there in one piece. Another awesome video take care and be safe on your journeys. Denis from Santa Rosa CA.

The original 6.7 VGT could provide 130 retarding horsepower. The newer smaller VGT in the later trucks can provide 175 retarding horsepower. Ford and GM do not have that sort of capability with just a variable vane turbo. And 37000 pounds going down that 7 % grade pushes with 172 horsepower. Nice balance.

Hi Dave, enjoyed the fantastic sunny mountain views and your exhaust braking demonstration 👍. Question 🙋 To test my understanding, in order to comply with the speed restriction👮‍♂️you are holding the Ram in 2nd gear and this is because speed control / cruise Control would only operated above 25 mph?
@daveanddianethrowingcautio5707
@daveanddianethrowingcautio5707 Жыл бұрын
That is correct. I have used cruise going downhill on lesser grades where the speed limit was higher but for me the cruise control lets it run a bit farther beyond the speed I want to be at and I just don't feel like I have the control that I do by using gears and exhaust brake combo. Glad you enjoyed the views.

How is the quality of the Classy Chassis hauler bed? I've been looking at them and Utility Bodywerks. Both in northern Indiana. Looking at the Kelderman 4-link rear suspension and possibly the Kelderman air ride front suspension. No trailer yet so it would be a daily driver for a while.

@@daveanddianethrowingcautio5707 also, have you thought about using your cruise control when going UP AND DOWN those grades. I noticed you kept saying you had to speed up when going gown the grade. If you set the cruise on 30 MPH with the tow haul mode on and no engine brake, I'm certain that would be enough and be very safe going down. Almost like tow haul and the engine brake was to much... I use cruise control probably 95% of the time when towing. Love it.

Hi Robin, First off thanks for stopping in and following along. To begin with I spoke with Utility a couple weeks ago because I had heard a rumor that I wanted to make sure was true, Utility is actually making the beds for Classy Chassis at this point to Classy Chassis specs which I guess has no real meaning but I figured I would toss that in. Regardless of who you have make the bed the truck itself will of course still do the work and regardless of who you have make the bed you will have a darn nice setup. And I will say that I do love our truck. But to answer your question as you asked it,,, I can NOT reward poor customer service so IF we were to have another unit built I would give Utility a shot. To this date Tom from Classy Chassis has not responded to any of my issues and that type of service will not allow me to spend one more cent with them. In fact when we get down south for the winter I am going to look into having any and all of their badging removed from the ruck because I will not promote or back them. Again I love the truck, just not the customer service. Keep in mind we are not talking about a money issue because at this point we are talking about under $1000 out of pocket and if he would have stepped up and even offered any help or concern at all it would be a different story . This is pure and simple a customer service after the sale issue with me. . .

I will also add that Tom from Utility just retired and that company is owed by Luxe so it could be interesting in the near future to see how that all unfolds. If Luxe tells Tom from Classy that they are not going to make his beds any longer it could end up being one less company to choose from. Time will tell and I am not wishing that to happen at all. But, just be aware. But I guess if you buy from Classy and Utility stops making his beds and he gets out of that part of the business it wouldn't really matter because he doesn't stand behind his product anyway. Sorry, that wasn't very professional to say but it is what it is.

Even if your state doesn't have the 26k laws and you drive in another state that could be something to know ... thanks again for your help and the videos ... stay safe out there . 🙏

Got a 3500 too. What makes a helluva difference is I air down the fronts to 53 PSI and the backs to 55 PSI. I also have the factory air bags, so doing these 2 things makes a huge difference. Several times we have disconnected and I have forgotten to air down from 65 and 80 to my non towing pressure, and it is very noticeable!! But is is a 1 ton dooly, so she aint gonna ride like a half-ton truck. Hope this helps! 👍😃🍻

@@daveanddianethrowingcautio5707 I am glad we are having this discussion. There are lots of ideas on this subject. My research on this... USDOT... They do not require true RVers to weigh camper. @badgerpa9

@@historicspencernc9698 You need to check your state, most states have an RV exclusion. We can register an RV right up to gross combined of 80K and not need a special license. CDL is for commercial though so not likely you need to become commercial some states do have rated drivers license though. When you look at the place you are reading the 26,001 from remember to read the entire line including the "any commercial vehicle over etc." People miss that all the time and some people openly lie on purpose to scare others about the license.
